"Bad Brains Or Bad Facts?" - Study Refutes Media Reports About NFL Players' Life Expectancy.
Talk of concussions in the NFL has been all the rage in last couple of years, and rightfully so. There is a lot that science is learning about the long term effects of repetitive head injuries on someones long term health, both physical and mental, but there is still a lot we don’t know or understand. However, that lack of scientific insight hasn’t stopped people from taking strong stances on the issue. The most common “knee-jerk” reaction are comments like “Come on, man! What is there to study? All that banging heads together, of course it’s not good for you! Of course it’s gonna mess guys up in the head.”
The most recent link between Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) and off the field mental health has been the issue of suicide amongst former NFL athletes. In just over the past year-and-a-half, four former NFL players (Ray Easterling, Dave Duerson, Junior Seau and O.J. Murdock) have committed suicide, adding more fuel to the already heated debate over the long term effects of brain injuries and the game of football. One recent headline even read “Junior Seau and the disturbing NFL suicide trend”. Scary stuff, but “trend”? Is there even any hard evidence to back up these sorts of claims?
The NFL has taken a lot flack for what many consider their “nonchalant” response to the concerns surrounding mTBI and their game, so much so that the United States Congress got involved and have grilled NFL officials and doctors on the matter. Specifically, Dr. Ira Casson the former NFL doctor, told Congress that there was no proven link between football head injuries and brain disorders. Evidence since that statement has all suggested otherwise. But, the idea of “brain disorders” is a pretty broad one. In there are included everything from Alzheimer’s disease to dementia and Parkinson’s and even depression. Teasing these out and searching for an indisputable link between each disease and mTBI will take some time, mainly because the only way to truly see, on a microscopic level, what is going on in the brains of the men in question is to examine their brain tissues after they have passed away.

[ January 07, 2012 ] : First, everyone here at Injury-Duty would like to to send out our best wishes to Jeff Backus. Sucks to go down with an injury, but it has to sting that much more when it's in a playoff game - that you lose nonetheless. We're all wishing you a speedy recovery! Get well soon, brotha! It's tough to see anything in the footage, but you do see Backus (#76) grabbing for his arm during the play. He had this to say about the injury: "A guy made an inside move and I went to hook him with my arm and my bicep popped," Backus said.
After the Bronco's post-game celebration for their big win over the Steelers settles down, which may take a while (rumor has it Tebow turned Gatorade into wine in the locker room) attention is sure to turn to Eric Decker. The young wide-receiver (WR) went down with a knee injury (update: MRI confirmed a sprained MCL) after attempting to make a catch in Sunday's game.
This sort of stuff happens, after all it is professional football, and it's the playoffs. The stakes are high. But, the thing that is likely to stir up the most controversy may actually not be so much about Deck as it'll be about the man who made the tackle: James Harrison. The Steelers linebacker is no stranger to controversy, the guy has been fined damn near $200,00 for hits that the NFL considered illegal (all being helmet to helmet shots on defenseless player). This time around Harrison was nowhere close to making helmet to helmet contact on Decker. Instead, he went low… real low, taking out the WR with a shot at his left knee. Decker was forced to leave the game and did not return.
It's only a matter of time before the intentions of Harrison are called into question. It's important to note that as the rules currently stand, his hit was "clean". Granted, if you asked guys around the league what they thought about the hit, we're betting most would say there was nothing clean about it.
The league has pushed hard to protect players from concussions only to have some players, and a lot more fans, accuse the NFL of coddling players. The irony here is that if given the choice, we'd imagine more players would prefer to be hit high rather than low- because the knee injury will hurt your career "right now". The head injury, well, you don't have to worry about those for while, right?
[ January 08th, 2012 ] : Cornerback Aaron Ross did not finish Sunday's game after sustaining a head injury. The team officially announced he suffered a concussion. Jason Pierre-Paul was uninjured and returned to finish the game.
[ January 01, 2012 ] : Spencer Larsen suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee, and his availability is in question. Team may have to turn to Austin Sylvester, who was cut twice and has yet to play in a game this season.
[ December 23, 2011 ] : Vikings expect injured Adrian Peterson to be ready for 2012 season. Damn. Vikings can't catch a break.
