[The Herbal Infection]

WARNING(s): This writing will include mentions/descriptions of general gore/blood, animal death, self mutilation, maybe something can be considered body horror. Read at your own risk

"The herbal infection of Saronia, that island is long since dead and filled with poisonous plants."

The infection begins when a fox's wound is treated with the infected herbs crushed to a paste or if a fox eats them for relief.

Stage 1:

Foxes will feel symptoms ranging from common cold to flu, though, none of it is deadly for now and can be cured with the correct ingredients, this stage is the least dangerous as they keep sanity.

Stage 2:

Foxes infected will salivate a lot, as if on sedatives but they are fully awake. Foxes may start to feel dizzy at this state, nosebleeds are more likely and the amount of saliva can sometimes be mixed with blood. This is when the infection becomes harder to cure, possible but difficult.

Stage 3:

More pain, too much to bear. Foxes will begin biting at their tails and bodies, ripping fur and muscle with cries of agony—their mouths start foaming like they have rabies. They seem close to a catatonic state, though far from the truth, they are stressed and bite those near them even with shaking legs. This stage is uncurable.

Stage 3 also seems to have mental side effects as well such as: Mania, insanity, memory loss, paranoia, loss of movement, aggression.

Stage 4:

Not final, but close. Foxes at this stage are mutated weirdly, plants grow through their mouths and open wounds, their entrails drag on the ground with vines hanging down from ribs, mold grows on spots and slowly takes over its host. The mind and heart are kept in-tact and alive, they feel pain and are sensitive to bright lights as well as being weak to fire. Their legs are broken, twisted by their own accord, wings become pointless as they have been torn to bone.

Stage 5:

Rotting from inside-out, they smell of rafflesias. Foxes in this state are... unrecognizable, they bite at anything near with unhinged jaws and hazy eyes, ears twitching as leaves and flowers sprout from their body leaving holes that bleed at a constant. They do not feel pain, their nervous system is long gone leaving the brain and heart. They react horribly to loud sounds at this stage... but once they get past the noise? Running away is not an option.

Death:

Stage 5 only lasts for 4-9 days, then the foxes become catatonic and not move until their brains and heart shut down, poison runs through the plants as they grow from the host. Saronia is dead, there is no hope for the island unless the volcano is to erupt—those who enter normally never come back, those that have? Saying they left immediately as they saw bodies of foxes overgrown with plants and the stench of all 465 members of the Saronia Skulk rotting in that decaying wasteland.
