Experience shooting a short movie at The New School
On November 19th we filmed the material for a short movie as a project for the Media Design class, at The New School.
Before the shooting I was very worried, mainly about getting all the footage we needed in the time we had.
It turned up, on set, that our producer had an amazing sense of time, and her planning was very accurate. We shot everything we needed and some extra scenes. The director, who was a bit unsure about what she wanted in pre-production, came to the set knowing exactly what she wanted in each scene, making the crew and cast feel comfortable and safe.
In the end, everything felt in their right places, and I realized I was worried for nothing. Now it is time to work on the post-production, but I am pretty sure everything will be fine.
Away
I can't see what
others see
When I float in their seas
Always in foreign sees
I still feel as if in mine
It's my water
It's my kraken
If I manage to float back
to my own sea
I don't even need to open
my eyes
Primeiro dia de inverno
Um frio que invade as botas
Uma ansiedade que invade a alma
Uma inquietude que soterra o coração

Soundscape
Today I went to my roof and stayed there for 20 min with my eyes closed. I heard lots of birds with different kinds of singing, trains every 3 or 4 minutes and many traffic sounds: motors, wheels, doors being opened and closed. There was also the sound of the wind and eventual planes.
Media Log #3
The best songs I ever heard were from Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango album, performed live. As for audio only compositions, I like some experimental Brazilian bands, like Aeromoças e Tenistas Russas. In undergrad school, we wanted to make a short movie totally in the main character point of view, and I designed the sound. It was a challenging experience to record and edit sound focusing the whole time on how the character was listening. You can watch it here:
I listen to music when I am reading or in public transportation. I can’t listen to music and write at the same time, really takes my concentration away.
In movies, I like sound designs that tell you more about the story, the environment or the characters, that builds the whole WITH the images, not only accompanying them. The designs that engage me best are the ones barely noticeable, but very efficient in putting the audience in a specific emotional state.
This is one of the possible ways to play a tambourine in Capoeira. It makes me miss my Capoeira group and Brazil
I mixed this song with “Arrepio” by Marisa Monte, “Iuna” and “São Bento Grande” by Mestre Bimba and phrases said by John Cage. Enjoy!
