i KNOW thefinebros are the corporate swine of youtube that profit off tragedy, but i personally think that their showĀ āmymusicā was actually really creative and originalĀ
the show had interesting characters with depth, it was self-aware and referenced itself a lot (and really ripped into itself when it came to making fun of the storyline, characters, and unrealistic events), and it was extremely experimental and probably a bit ahead of its time. the social media aspect of the entire thing seems like something that wouldāve fallen flat on its face or have come off asĀ āpanderingā, however the way it was handled actually enhanced the experience of the show a fuckton
i was absolutely OBSESSED with mymusic as a 13 year old. i decided to watch the entire main show a few days ago just to experience the nostalgia of it all. trust me when i say, SO MANY JOKES AND REFERENCES WENT OVER MY HEAD. i found myself actually laughing at this series and really appreciating characters i used to hate because they were a bit moreĀ āadultā then say, scene or techno
indie and idol especially became really hilarious and interesting to me, whereas characters like scene were a little less enjoyable than they had been when i was younger
anyway, yes mymusic did have its flaws (and quite a few dark jokes that were a little jarring to such an upbeat series) as well as having several people involved that are pretty shitty (thefinebros, toby turner) but if you can grit your teeth and get through the satan scenes, youāll be able to tell how much fun the actors had, how much feeling there was behind the series, how creative and fearless it was when it came to experimentation, and how the characters were really able to connect with the fans (which is pretty much UNHEARD OF outside unofficial tumblr ask blogs run by 12 year olds)Ā
mymusic was really refreshing and different, and iām not really sure if thereās anything else like it on the internet. it was made for youtube with a few youtube actors, therefore it felt genuine because the actors knew their audience.Ā
i got into mymusic because of jacksfilms, who is extremely talented (i went off him after he started making yiay though, not really my thing) but rediscovering his talent is such an inspiring feeling. there are also a few other actors who really stuck out, especially adam busch, lainey lipson (she has some intense dedication to her role, especially seeing what sheās actually like in real mosh) and grace helbig, who was blatantly just enjoying the fuck out of herself and not taking it too seriously, which is exactly what the series needed
anyway i want to bring up the social media aspect one more time because honestly, THAT WAS DONE SO WELL. also, to be able to see the characters making the shows in the series, and then being able to watch those shows, is likeā¦. just a completely new way to experience content
unfortunately mymusic never got a third season, likely because it wasnāt quite successful enough, which is a huge shame. i really think we should be encouraging more experimentation like this in the media because itād be fucking awesome to see more shows breaking the fourth wall and allowing character interaction, because it adds so much depth to characters.
anyway this is the only thing iāve been thinking about for the past 36 hours so i needed to talk about it before i hemorrhagedĀ
