did tumblr's UI change or did i just randomly forget what the layout looks like?? cus i just opened the app and was like huh
please read this even if you're not indian. especially if you're not indian.
you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
β’ infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
β’ youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
β’ only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
β’ manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
β’ journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
β’ even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.
we can still save her. but only loudly.
reblog. share. don't scroll past.

Welcome, contestants.
Please take your seats. The lights are already on. The cameras are rolling whether you notice them or not.
I am The Gamemaster.
Tonightβs game is simple. There are no teams. There are no lifelines. There is only the quiet pressure of being watched and the knowledge that every choice you make is being recorded.
Round One begins the moment you reblog this.
In the tags, confess the one thing you would do if you knew no one could stop you.
Then tag three(or more) more people who deserve a seat at this table.
Those who play will be remembered.
Those who hesitate will still be counted.
I post games. I write stories. I create scenarios that do not let go easily.
Follow if you want more.
Send an ask if you want to speak to me directly.. enjoy the ones who reach out.
Smile for the audience.
The show has already started.
The Gamemaster~

When my friends (both online and irls) vent to me, I try really hard to comfort them and reassure them that whatever they're venting about is going to be okay, or that they're valid or i tell them whatever it is i think that they need to hear in order to make themselves feel better about their situation. But it's really hard to help in a way that feels meaningful. Sometimes I struggle to respond to vents in the first place due to not knowing what to say, not wanting to give the wrong advice, not wanting to seem like im just saying the same things over and over again, rephrasing things to make it seem different. And I often have to google how to comfort a friend, which makes me feel like a terrible friend and a terrible person in general for not already possessing the knowledge regarding how to help.
I usually try to comfort people using what I know would help to comfort me if I was in their situation, but what's comforting to me might not be comforting at all or enough for them. When it comes to online friends, I just wish I could physically help them when they need it in the same way that I can help my irl friends. When irl friends need help, I can meet them at their house or somewhere else, I can hug them, I could offer them a space at my house if they needed it, but I can't do anything like that for the people I only know online.
Despite this, I will continue to try and help my friends, both irl and online, to the very best of my ability. I know that sometimes all I'm physically able to do is react to the messages with a Β«π«Β» because of me being anxious to respond with the wrong thing or due to me not understanding or having enough context to be able to respond immediately, but I just need to get it off my chest that I do care about everyone and that I see your messages and I read them, and I think about them a lot. I think about them even more when I feel like I can't help in the way that I would like to.
Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk, I guess.

I finally have a copy of The Illusion of Living!! :D
I've genuinely read this book so many times at my friends house, and ive been desperate to get a copy of my own, and now I finally do.
Once I've read (my copy of) the book, I'm gonna get the rest of the books. :)
I finally got back around to playing Tomodachi Life Living the Dream again >:3
I'm not finished making all of the lifers & hermits yet tho
"The trannies should be able to piss in whatever toilet they want and change their bodies however they want. Why is it my business if some chick has a dick or a guy has a pie? I'm not a trannie or a fag so I don't care, just give 'em the medicine they need."
"This is an LGBT safe space. Of COURSE I fully support individuals who identify as transgender and their right to self-determination! I just think that transitioning is a very serious choice and should be heavily regulated. And there could be a lot of harm in exposing cis children to such topics, so we should be really careful about when it is appropriate to mention trans issues or have too much trans visibility."
One of the above statements is Problematic and the other is slightly annoying. If we disagree on which is which then working together for a better future is going to get really fucking difficult.
Someone who says they don't care if dudes wear dresses and makeup is a better ally than someone who says they're a safe space for women and non-binary people. I am not joking.
yeah I went to a gay bar recently with my husband tumblr user beemovieerotica, and a VERY confused capital S Southerner straight man in cargo shorts and a trucker hat showed up
apparently he (who through my drunken memory I remember only as Earl) liked some woman, and she told him that he wasn't cultured enough and needed to attend his first drag show (she also flaked on him)
Now I'm reasonably androgynous and was wearing makeup, a short leather skirt, and black heeled boots, but still when this guy came up to me when I was standing off alone and asked "So. Do you come here often?" with a very earnest expression, I thought. Surely not. This guy doesn't think I'm a straight woman does he????
Anyway I start talking with this guy and he has no idea what the fuck is going on but he is just a very kind and earnest dude and asked a lot of questions (while asking if it was alright if he asked those questions). I track down my husband and friends and I'm like y'all. We need to make sure that Earl has a Good Fucking Time tonight.
Man was completely out of his depth. At one point they put on a puppy auction to raise money for Pride, that started with a 6 ft drag queen in all her glory leading a leather pup out on a leash to the tune of that damned RSPCA "in the arms of the angels" song
We look at Earl. Nervous. He squints, laughs, and then goes "I was wondering why people were dressed like that!" He turned to me and asked "So they're like dogs?" And I said yeah pretty much. And he just chuckled and went "Yeah I thought so with the tails! Never seen this before!"
When the first drag king came out, Earl looked at me wide eyed and went "There's a dude version too?!" And I said yeah they're called drag kings. And he said, low, "Drag kings."
During one of the queens performances, he frowned, shook his head and told me, "Your legs are better than hers." in a tone that implied he thought there was some travesty taking place and I should also be getting paid
When he found out I was there with my husband (and that I am not a woman) he profusely apologized and said "I'm so sorry, it's dark in here and I thought you were a hot chick! I wouldn't have said nothing if I knew you had a husband, I'm so sorry about that."
When beemovie invited me to the dance floor with him later and I still had a drink in my hand, Earl said "Oh don't worry about that I can hold your drink, you get on out there and shake your ass with your husband!" Then before we left, Earl bought me drinks for "Putting up with me all night and answering everything. Y'all helped me have a great time tonight."
like. You gotta recognize there's going to people who have never had interacted outside of their of their own community. This includes you. And just because your community is familiar with all the right vocabulary and how to correctly say something, it doesn't mean they're actually going to support you. If someone like Earl shows up, confused and out of their depth but kind and curious and earnest, you gotta have patience and truck through the small things, so when he goes back to his friends and his coworkers and they snicker asking how the drag show was, he can genuinely talk about how included we tried to make him feel and that he had a great time
The person matters more than the language
I will fuckin never not reblog this.
I think I've reblogged this before, but it bears repeating.
I think some of the worst damage to leftist causes is done by that specific set of people who claim that they care about marginalised groups and the prejudice they face, but whose principle activism consists of using progressive language to pick fights with people from up on their home-made moral high-horse.
