Sacrificial Love

My mother said she would have taken all the beatings and the bullets my brother had been given by the thugs who jumped him. She wishes she had been there to put herself before him and allow safe passage. She says that's how much she loves us, but I don't understand how that makes sense.... Because all those nights she got drunk and beat us or chased us out of the house with knives, are still emblazoned in my nightmares like the scars on my skin; I cannot be free of them. All the times that she had abandoned us for long months, and even longer nights of hunger and cold with no food or power to protect us from the cold; all those times we longed for her maternal comfort to protect our stranded souls: there were no bullets to be taken. There were no thugs to protect us from. In all my time in Afghanistan, I learned how easy it is to give one's life for another. It is very instinctual in times of fear and bravery. What is hard though; what truly makes your sacrifice an act of love, is waking up each day to dedicate your spirit to the service of another. To not die, but to slave. To break bones barely healed out of love for our dear ones. To rise at the crack of whirling whips... to stand among thorny thickets under the ravaging rays of blistering sun. It is the burden of constant selflessness and enduring compassion that proves love above all else.
