‘ yes, i suppose that’s what we do. complain about it, often times, but it’s what we do. ’ a chuckle. ‘ that’s the uh.. the price it pays to be a hero, right? not having a decent sleep schedule? ’

her gaze shifts and he follows it, eyes landing on his hand before he covers it with his good one almost ashamedly, like it’s embarrassing. he supposes it is. that’s a story he hopes to never have to fully tell. ‘ when you live in a jungle you learn to make due without showers. the order of the serpent wasn’t exactly a five star luxury resort. still trying to break out of the habit of skipping stuff like that when i’m stressed out, ha ha. reflex, i guess. ’

she notices the way his eyes follow hers, the way he shifts to cover up his hand. it breaks her heart thinking about hayden feeling like he has to hide things from her.

hannah hopes she isn’t crossing a line when she stretches forward and takes both of his hands within her own, smiling. ‘ well now you’re home. and if you’re stressed out i am more than willing to take you out -- like you used to do for me. spa date and manicures? walk in the park drinking tea? up to you, dude. ’

he hadn’t exactly wanted to show up for coffee when hannah invited him, but, given that it was hannah he couldn’t particularly say no. she deserved more than that after he’d just up and left, and it’s why he comes walking up despite looking very tired and like he’d just rolled out of bed. ( though to be fair, he had ). hayden settles himself in the seat across from her, hands folding on the table, metallic fingers tapping against the smooth wood almost nervously.

‘ kinda late for coffee, don’t you think? i mean.. unless you wanna stay up late. then it’s the perfect time. ’

‘ well that’s what we do, isn’t it? ’ she asks, a smile gracing her lips as she brushes a few loose strands of hair from her face. ‘ we stay up late. all the time. ’

gaze flickers to his prosthetic hand. a reminder of how much time was lost. how many years she went without seeing her best friend. how much they both had changed in the meantime. ‘ you look like you haven’t showered in a bit. that seems unlike you. ’
