So I've been watching the vampire diaries, and this is one of the takes on season 1. When looking at the dynamic between Elena Gilbert and Bonnie Bennett in the first season, the relationship stops looking like a supportive high school friendship and starts looking like a masterclass in narrative servitude. From the literal pilot episode, the writing establishes a deeply uncomfortable hierarchy: Elena is the fragile, central protagonist whose emotional and physical safety is paramount, and Bonnie is her functionally hyper-competent, utterly disposable shield. The show strips Bonnie of her autonomy, her grief, and her humanity, converting her into a glorified utility tool whose sole purpose is to labor for Elena’s survival.
This imbalance is immediately evident in the emotional economy of their friendship, which is entirely bankrupt. Elena spends the first half of the season consuming all the air in the room with her grief over her parents and her hyper-fixation on her new, mysterious boyfriend. Bonnie is expected to be the ultimate sounding board by nodding, comforting, and validating Elena’s feelings. But the second Bonnie starts experiencing terrifying psychic visions, bleeding from the nose, and manifesting actual, uncontrollable magic, the narrative completely minimizes her fear. Instead of Elena stepping up to protect and ground her best friend, Bonnie’s awakening is immediately treated as a plot device to help Elena uncover secrets. Bonnie’s trauma is never allowed to exist for its own sake; it is only relevant when it services Elena's storyline.
Beyond the emotional neglect, there is a glaring, deeply disturbing dynamic to how Bonnie is treated in the narrative. She is effectively positioned as a modernized, supernatural variant of the "Magical Best Friend" trope, meaning she is a character whose entire existence, heritage, and power are weaponized exclusively to protect, rescue, and uplift the white lead. Bonnie is constantly pressured, guilt-tripped, and coerced into using her literal life force to bail Elena out of situations she walked into willingly. Elena’s boyfriend is trapped? Bonnie must drain herself to save him. The town is in danger? Bonnie must risk her life to fix it.
The framing of her character mimics a historical dynamic of forced servitude. Bonnie’s boundaries are consistently ignored, her bodily autonomy is violated by constant magical exhaustion, and she is expected to happily sacrifice her peace, her safety, and her family's secrets for the sake of Elena's love life. This peaks tragically with the death of her grandmother, Sheila, who explicitly warns Bonnie that these people will use them and discard them. Sheila then dies from the sheer physical strain of a spell performed solely because Elena begged Bonnie for help.
The aftermath of that loss is where the dynamic becomes undeniable. Bonnie loses her only guide, her grandmother, and her entire connection to her heritage because she tried to save Elena’s vampire boyfriend. She leaves town to grieve a massive, world-shattering loss. When she returns, the narrative doesn't allow her to hold a justified boundary or harbor resentment. Instead, she is expected to fall back into line and play nice with the literal monsters who caused her grandmother's death. Elena’s brief attempts at comforting Bonnie always feel like a checkbox she’s ticking off before she inevitably asks Bonnie for another magical favor.
