THE VAMPIRE DIARIES | 1.01 Pilot.

Honestly, the way the writers were completely obsessed with the Stefan, Elena, and Damon love triangle in season one ruined so many good storylines. They treated these two brothers fighting over a teenager like it was the absolute center of the universe, and it completely overshadowed the actual world-building and character arcs. The whole town of Mystic Falls had centuries of dark history, but the show shrunk all of that down just to be a basic backdrop for high school romance drama.

It's especially frustrating when you look at how the human characters were treated. Vicki Donovan’s entire storyline about addiction, neglect, and being literally assaulted by vampires was completely brushed aside. Her death wasn't even about her; it was just used to create drama between Stefan and Damon and give Elena something to cry about. Same thing with Jeremy. He was dealing with massive grief over his parents' dying, and they just supernaturally wiped his memory, so Elena wouldn't have to deal with a sad brother while she was figuring out her dating life. The humans weren't treated like real people with actual feelings, just props to react to the Salvatores.

Even the supernatural stakes got completely flattened because of this tunnel vision. The whole build-up to opening the tomb and letting out an army of old vampires was actually terrifying. But instead of actually exploring what happens when a bunch of dangerous, vengeful vampires enter the modern world, the show rushed through killing them off because the writers couldn't handle anything distracting from the triangle. All that cool lore about the founding families and the town's history just got reduced to a basic backstory about two brothers being obsessed with the same girl. It made a massive, dangerous supernatural world feel so tiny because the writing refused to let anyone care about anything else besides which brother Elena was picking that week.

the way tvd treated vicki donovan was disgusting btw. i feel like vicki is a really easy character to hate because of the way her relationship with jeremy was written, and so people just kind of brush it off (and also people just hate addicts lmao) but the way that the narrative and the characters treat her addiction was like genuinely unbelievable.

caroline literally called her an "overdramatic druggie" and an attention whore for [checks notes] getting assaulted. tyler actively attempted to rape her and it was completely brushed off and ignored. jeremy and matt's grief in the series over vicki's death was undercut over and over again because she was seen as lesser, and the narrative consistently reinforced the idea that vicki deserved what happened to her because she was an addict and she "made bad choices." also the whole thing with how vicki's transition was handled and how her addictive tendencies factored into the decision to kill her was just. literally just nasty as hell. like oh my god
