I contemplate the happy faces of people around me here in Ireland and reminisce about the happy normal life my family and I had before the war. A life that turned into a distant memory for us and was replaced by an unending series of horrible nightmares.
Unlike my family in Gaza, people here have access to drinking water, all types of food, electricity, and a roof over their heads. Above all, they are safe, and I cannot help but wonder if they genuinely do appreciate these blessings in their lives enough.
People seem relaxed and laughing wholeheartedly around me in Ireland. I wish I could laugh too, but I am crushed way beyond recovery on the inside. I was evacuated by my Irish college after five months of living the horrors of war in Gaza. I hope you will never know what it feels like to live in constant fear and worry and be horrified by the most sickening and scary nightmares every single night while you are far away from your family in such circumstances.
When did my people in Gaza cease to be human beings worthy and deserving of a normal life? Has it become normal now for my family in Gaza to be starved and killed while the whole world is watching the genocide? If that is the case, then you will have to excuse me if I seek every avenue to bring them to Ireland and start a new normal life like all people here around me.
I was assured by the Irish Reugee Council (IRC) and lawyers in Ireland that there is hope I can reunite with my family in Ireland. In difficult times, it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. For me and my family, you are literally our light and hope for a better life.

It becomes really apparent when skating fans have never actually skated themselves because equating skating skills with artistry becomes kind of stupid when you realize just how physically demanding holding a single a deep edge or maintaining consistent speed and glide actually is. Like holding an edge is actually a full body work out where your arms and core do so much of the work. Even being able to choose and control what direction you go in is a skill. A slow skater is actually a worse skater than a faster one, a skater that can’t hold a deep edge or skate on one foot for long periods of time is actually a worse skater for it. Like to put into perspective spins are incredibly difficult and a lot of people at my rink are consistently landing multiple single jumps before they’re even thinking about laybacks or sit spins. I’ve seen a lot of doubles at my rink but I’ve yet to see a broken leg sit spin or anyone attempting figures. Like these are difficult technical skills that are incredibly athletically challenging and that’s what makes them aesthetically pleasing. It’s beautiful because it’s hard
ok so all this ‘neutral’ athletes will be receiving no funding from their countries federations or governments right? you know, like many other skaters already. or will we continue to let fsrussia use their athletes as a propaganda machine under the guise of neutrality?
Okay so is the ISU also not going to talk about the doping… like not only is Russia bombing another county they’re also very much doping their athletes. Like the elephant would like to be addressed
the issue of banning russians/belarussians was always going to end like this because the war on ukraine was being used as pretext for what they should have been banned for in the first place (the doping). isu dug themselves into a hole because obviously russia is not the only country ever to wage a war.
This sport is so bullshit - a friend of mine at my rink reported sexual harassment from a coach and waited a month for the figure skating director to tell her that they couldn't do anything because the coach isn't employed by the rink and she would have to pursue this as private citizens and I found out the same day as the Sorensen case being thrown out. This sport is rotten to it's very core, at every single level.
you can feel the moment in a tv show when a woman who was an independent character suddenly becomes a love interest. its like a shackle locking onto her ankle.
