consider: instead of 4 episodes of evil gwen arc we get like two eps dedicated to merlin going insane after the disir and trying to kill mordred in every way possible. but the old religion is like "yeah, no FUCK YOU" so mordred just. does not die. merlin throws him down a cliff, a few hours later he is miraculously back in camelot. he stabs him and mordred stands up and says "what was that for???"

at some point, merlin just snaps and destroys about one third of the forest with his magic and mordred stands in the middle of all of this mess, completely fine.

arthur and the others are just too astonished to say anything about it.

something about merlin and mordred's dynamic is so..interesting

in the way that, after being knighted, mordred is of higher rank than merlin, thus should have more of an authority towards him. but it's actually the other way around, because mordred and the viewer know that merlin's abilities far exceed mordred's, or anyone's on that matter. he's literally a god, one that mordred was taught to worship.

and even though merlin partakes in socially submissive acts towards him, mordred is aware that merlin could snap his neck with sheer will if he wanted to.

but only the people aware of merlin's magic see that reversed power dynamic and arthur is obviously not amongst them. arthur doesn't know about the prophecies either, so he doesn't know what a massive threat merlin poses to his knight
