It’s been a rough time to be a Solas hater. His last-minute romance in Inquisition is very popular, and even if you didn’t slip him Fade tongue, his status as the games’ new big bad means that every pre-game interview about Veilguard was very Solas-centric. Whether or not the game would make good on the promise of Solas as a character was a huge topic of discussion, and whether or not it did is a current matter of debate. However, what is it exactly that Solas’s writing promised? The narrative issues with Veilguard have been spoken about at length, but I haven’t seen anyone address the state that Inquisition left the franchise in, and especially how so many of these issues center around lore reveals and writing choices made in relation to one character. In short: in this essay, I want to argue that it is, in fact, Solas’s fault.

#oh thank you for putting this into words. god #i am genuinely of the opinion that the way solas's arc was set up in dai and then the subsequent culmination of that arc in veilguard #are the dragon age equivalent of the ''secret good sherlock bbc episode“ phenomenon. by which i mean that #in the same way steven moffat was allegedly good at writing setups and absolutely dogshit at delivering on them so was solas's datv arc #a devastation flop compared to the way he was hyped up by dai. and the Everything after. in my humble opinion #*devastating #frankly i think da games would've been better off without solas. not necessarily because i hate his ass (that too) but because #the moment they introduced solas it all became about solas. the amount of “it was actually solas all along!” datv pulled was. painful #anyway. great essay #the part about “fighting things that are Old” made me chuckle knowing that we've reached new lows with datv's post credit cutscene
