the  last  thing  she  can  sense  is  that  his  plea  is  earnest,  doused  and  dripping  with  an  authenticity  that  somehow  she  cannot  come  to  accept.  her  ears  ring,  head  throbs  --  only  a  few  more  miles  remain  until  they  reach  the  bunker,  but  2o  is  not  sure  if  she  can  make  it  that  far.  although  they  had  emerged  victorious  from  a  battle  with  a  machine,  she  sustained  a  heavy  blow  to  the  temple.  system  failure  threatens  her  body  and  hydraulic  fluid  pounds  heavily  behind  her  eyes.  just  keep  going,  you  can  rest  when  you  get  there  ...  

black  shrouds  her  vision  without  her  eyes  even  closing,  and  unknowingly  she  leans  against  9s  for  support.  ❛  i  --  i  can’t  ...  ❜  she  stammers,  clambering  to  his  shoulder.  ❛  go  on  ...  without  me,  i’ll  ...  catch  up.  ❜

                    the  rhythmic  clicking  of  fingers  against  the  keyboard  ceases  as  he  becomes  aware  of  her  presence  behind  him.  in  the  not  so  distant  past,  he  probably  would  have  tensed,  expecting  some  form  of  verbal  reprimand,  but  the  edge  that  her  voice  once  held  when  speaking  to  the  enforcers  has  softened  considerably  over  time.  it’s  been  a  gradual  change,  but  he’s  been  there  for  all  of  it,  silently  noting  the  shift  in  her  demeanor.  “  y - yes,  inspector.  “  he  nods  in  acknowledgement,  slowly  rising  from  his  seat.  it’s  been  a  relatively  quiet  day  with  no  noted  spikes  in  the  crime  coefficients  of  the  public,  so  he  wonders  what  she  could  need  him  for.  “  did  something  happen … ?  “

❛  um,  not  exactly,  ❜  she  admits,  averting  her  gaze  and  toying  idly  with  the  komissa  keychain  on  her  bag.  ❛  i’ll  explain  in  a  second.  ❜  with  that,  she  leads  him  through  the  hallway,  footsteps  resounding  against  the  high  ceiling,  and  comes  to  a  stop  at  the  main  corridor.  she  taps  her  inspector  code  into  the  touchscreen  and  the  threshold  opens  automatically.  once  they  are  in  the  open,  the  sun  catches  in  her  eyes  and  she  has  to  squint  for  a  moment  before  she  adjusts.  hinakawa  must  have  difficulty  as  well,  what  with  staring  at  a  computer  screen  all  day.  

finally,  mika  clears  her  throat.  ❛  okay,  well  ...  your  diligence  has  been  impressive  lately,  sho.  ❜  it’s  a  bit  of  a  risk,  using  his  first  name  as  opposed  to  his  formal  surname,  but  they  are  technically  outside  of  work,  even  if  mika  has  to  accompany  his  every  move.  ❛  so  i  thought  i  would  take  you  for  boba.  or  something.  ❜  she  offers  a  noncommittal  shrug  and  a  lopsided  smile.  ❛  if  you  even  like  boba,  that  is.  ❜

inspector  shimotsuki  has  taken  a  disliking  to  this  hour  of  the  day,  her  lunch  break,  as  she  often  finds  herself  dining  at  an  otherwise  vacant  table  in  the  corner  of  the  cafeteria.  of  course  nobody  would  bother  to  join  her;  she  would  not  expect  them  to  after  the  way  she  has  treated  them.  she  forks  a  portion  of  steamed  rice  into  her  mouth,  and  as  she  chews,  she  takes  note  of  a  small  figure  entering  the  corridor.  she  immediately  averts  her  gaze,  opting  to  busy  herself  by  running  her  thumb  and  index  finger  along  a  loose  thread  in  the  hem  of  her  skirt.  after  a  minute  or  two,  akane  has  approached  her  table,  and  mika  glances  up  to  face  her.  she  curls  her  fingers  around  the  fabric  nervously,  twisting  it,  and  swallows  hard  before  she  nods  in  acknowledgment.  

❛  inspector  tsunemori,  ❜  she  greets  her,  hoping  the  great  sense  of  intimidation  she  feels  is  not  evident  in  her  tone.  they  are  equals  in  terms  of  rank,  but  akane  has  established  herself  within  division  one.  she  has  gained  the  respect  of  the  enforcers,  something  that  mika  will  likely  never  receive.  ❛  um,  sure,  ❜  is  her  awkward  agreement,  and  she  stiffens  as  akane  takes  a  seat.
