If you choose to work with safe themes — with questions to which you already know the answer — you’ll write safe books. You can have a very successful career writing safe books; after all, you won’t drive too hard into the core of anyone’s comfort zone, you won’t force your readers to question the meaning of their own lives, you won’t upset yourself or anyone else by reaching conclusions you don’t like or find frightening. But you won’t grow as a writer, either, and you’ll risk becoming bored with your characters and your stories and your work…. Every writer has something to say, but those writers whose works endure have dared to say something about the things that frighten them, confuse them, challenge them, and occasionally delight them. They have not gone across the bridges built by others. They have dared to build their own.

Are you feeling stuck today? Take the last scene you wrote.   What if the main character makes a different choice? What if one of the secondary characters does the complete opposite of what they’re doing now? What if they push back instead of agree with your main character? What if they agree instead of push back?   The best solutions are not always the most obvious ones, so challenge yourself to do something different from what you’d normally do. Sometimes it’s all a matter of perspective.

Hi! So this blog isn't fully set up, but if I don't get it rolling I don't think I ever will. I plan on posting a daily prompt, most often a quote from a song or poem, that I think is interesting or inspiring enough to be a writing prompt. Use it in dialogue, description, or even just as the barest inspiration for writing - anything works. I'm not sure, but I think I will post the origin of the quote in a link (i.e. a link to the song/poem it's from) so it's clear I'm not claiming ownership of it, and people can choose to use it for further inspiration if they choose. I may also post other writing articles, advice etc. If you have suggestions, feel free to message me here or my main account, dark-law.
