24.04.15 // Tips for Sketch noting
What is Visual Notetaking? This is a series of visual notes from Sunni Brownās Visual Notetaking 101 - Module 1. I discovered visual thinking and visual note-taking just over a year ago, and soon afterwards purchased this course. I decided to revisit it and take my notes in Paper. Sunni Brown is one of the visual thinking professionals I follow, along with Dan Roam, Mike Rohde, Dave Gray, Brandy Agerbeck, Austin Kleon and David Sibbet.
This Saturday is full of warmness and smiles. Relaxed after hard working week and before another one, which is even more harder.
I was dreaming about this book for two month! Sketchnoting is waiting for me.

Hi! Half of the year I successfully spent without posts and studyblrcommunity but now (again as the year before) I have no motivation and working is harder day after day. That is why I decided to come back to you, guys! If anyone reads me, Iām a student from Ukraine, Kyiv and Iām studying system analysis at Kyiv Polytechnic University. That is smth like computer sciences. So Iām fond of math and programming. Also I like to draw and that is my second way to relax. (First is serials, of course). Happy to see you again!

Color code your notes
The most frequent advice I get on notetaking is to have a consistent color system to help when reviewing the notes. So I got different colors of post-its, highlighters and pens and decided to start doing it this week and here are my recommendations.
- donāt worry too much about buying new pens and highlighters before trying with the ones you already have
- too many colors might make your notes look cluttered. for neater notes, stick with few simple colors. start taking your notes with a neutral color like blue or black and use contrasting colors like red or light blue to make keywords pop when you read it later.
- before you start, write down the categories you want to include in your color system. some examples are important stuff, formulas, examples, definitions, things you need to research after school⦠it depends a lot on the subjects youāre taking.Ā
- if you have trouble defining the categories and colors, try to associate the color coding with another note-taking method. for example, when you use the cornell method, thereās no need for a color to stand for keywords if youāre going to write themĀ down in the left column.
I came up with some category ideas for myself that can work for pre-med and 1st/2nd year med students:
Clinical correlations, examples and drug effects in red
Formulas in light blue
Books/articles recommendation and things that require further research in green
Unknown terms and definitions in orange/yellow
As for keywords and important things, I prefer to underline and uppercase them
I am posting some note-taking inspiration later today. If you want to see how my color system looks like, leave a message!
One of my goal for this month is to post more original content and here I am with three motivational lockscreens. Hopefully the colors can bright up your day & the quotes can bright up your head. (ā¢Ģį“ā¢Ģ)Ł ĢĢ
The last day of winter. It was really happy three months. Be happy and believe in yourself, dear.
Hey guys, this is how I format my notes when I have to read a short story, article, or other kind of text for a class. I donāt typically type these kinds of notes out, but it looks cleaner like this for the sake of the post.
Date and week number : This is important for referencing back to your notes in the future. It also allows you to easily organize your notes chronologically.Ā
Title of the text and author : Make this big and bold so that you know exactly what the notes are for.
Boxed summary : I like to leave a box at the top of my paper that will fit a few sentences so that I can summarize the work when Iām done reading. This is super effective because you can just read the summary to quickly remember what the text was about, which is very helpful if you have a lot of reading to do for your classes.Ā
Bullet points for important points made : Self explanatory.
Bold important quotes : Quotes are very important for in class discussions, so itās good to pull out a few from every reading.Ā
