river and Boot - Captive Audience Ch10

The weight of Frank’s gun at his side and the pressure of the claw handed grip at his neck was the only thing that was keeping River moving. Every joint and every muscle was crying out and begging River to just stop and curl up and die. He couldn’t give Frank the satisfaction even as his head slumped, neck too tight and locked to be able to hold up the entire weight of his head. His time in the car boot cage had wrecked his body in a way that even the bullet wound hadn’t. Suddenly River’s head swum with overwhelming vertigo as his good foot gave way underneath him. The world fluttered and flickered out of focus interspersed with flashes of pitch darkness. His head clattered into the floor with the wave of nausea that came with it, sending his stomach spasming. The floor was wet all around him, his hands round mud and rotting leaves through the slow flow of water. A river, or more likely a stream based on the flow rate but stream didn’t have the same irony. River Cartwright in so much pain and blood loss and atrophy and infection that he was ready to die, meeting his maker in his namesake.

For those sprints I got 574 words!

Dad - mangroves Ch2

“It’s his dad. River’s dad had something to do with Westacres and River’s gone to France to talk to him and investigate,” Louisa blurted out. The secret had been eating her up from the inside in the hour or so since River had told her; getting it off her chest made some actions to help lift the crushing weight that River had settled on her. They could not fuck this up. “River’s dad?” Lamb’s attention was grabbed and his voice perked up. “I always assumed that River was some fiendish consequence of a deal that David Cartwright made with a devil,” he huffed but despite the levity Louisa could see the cogs turning in his mind. He was doing exactly what Louisa had done on the tube ride back to Slough House; he was piecing together everything he knew about the Cartwright family into the new world now that he knew the big secret.

For that sprint I got 416 words!

Trap - Dead Weight

Louisa hadn’t been on board with River’s plan to go and do this job for first desk. She knew it was hypocritical after her secondment to the office of the spider for her to judge River’s desperate efforts to get back into the good graces of The Park, which was why she hadn’t said anything to him or tried to stop him. She had come with him, unable to have another person she cared about die alone while serving the whims of the service. Of course it had been a trap, Louisa should have seen it coming. Why sacrifice the life of a real agent when you could sacrifice the life of a slow horse; it was kinder than the bullet to the head they would all get when they weren’t useful anymore. River wouldn’t have been alive to see his name tossed about by the water cooler as a traitor. He still might not see it.

For that sprint I got 383 words!

WIP Week Day 4 - Favourite WIP

This was a tough one as I love all of my children but I decided to pick Captive Audience as I love this chapter I am working on the most

There’s still something that wasn’t sitting right. That feeling of wrongness was niggling at the back of her mind like staring at a jigsaw where all the pieces fit but the image was disjointed. They had all the pieces and it all matched. The bomb in the stolen car as a threat in case of capture. The stolen drugs used to kill River. The security footage of Frank with River and a gun showing them leaving towards the tree. The blood at the base of the tree where River had been shot before he died. The carvings on the tree telling them that River was warning them about a Code September. The attempted escape to Amsterdam because ferries have easier security to making it through and bribe. It all fit into the story Frank had been trying to tell her; so why did she feel like it was just that … a story?

RANKED: River Cartwright Head Injuries, from Least to Most Concerning

2x04: Unable to brace while falling to ground after getting Tased, probably lands on face

This one barely counts. Also he falls onto dirt and it's the middle of summer, so the ground probably isn't even very hard. I give it zero ambulance sirens out of a possible five. Get up and try again.

5x04: Elbowed in face

Personally I would have liked to have seen more suffering. I give it 1 ambulance siren. 🚨

4x03: Fall through roof into pile of tires

I think he should have cut or scratched his face on the roof while falling. Overall, I give it 2 ambulance sirens, mostly because this occurs maybe an hour after a definite brain injury. 🚨🚨

3x03: Headbutt to nose

Probably broke his nose at least, which goes unaddressed. I give it 3 ambulance sirens. 🚨🚨🚨

4x02: Butt of pistol to back of head

This one looks pretty bad, but he seems fine. You could argue that's adrenaline, but I don't want to argue. Very enjoyable, I give it 4/5 ambulance sirens. 🚨🚨🚨🚨

1x02: Hit in face with pistol butt

He looks super dazed right after, which is probably something to be concerned about. At first I thought maybe he was bleeding out the ear after this, but upon further review, it seems that it was just a cut on the side of his forehead.

I award it 4 sirens. 🚨🚨🚨🚨

3x03: Thrown into lockers and then into wall, implied that beating continued while show cut to other POV characters, further injuries likely

Fun! 4 sirens, and then he manages to remain standing for several hours after that. 🚨🚨🚨🚨

3x06: Knocked out for a few minutes by close-range grenade blast and files/filing cabinets that fell on him

At minimum, no one should have allowed him to drive a car 30 minutes later. 5/5, stunning work. 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨

4x02: Butt of rifle to side of head

Two hard hits to the head in quick succession (not something they recommend). He remains unconscious for all of the following:

the entire drive back through town

being removed from the van

being carried/dragged into the house and up at least one flight of stairs

being lifted onto a bed

Victor leaving the room, locking the door, and going back downstairs

That's a pretty long time to not wake up after a head injury. Severe brain trauma! Love that for him. 5/5 sirens. Seek medical attention immediately. 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨

Also what a choice to then bonk his head, which I have to imagine is throbbing in pain, against this door.

Also notable that he again chooses to operate a vehicle shortly after injury.

So impressive how he just manages to keep on going despite serious bodily harm, the Kerri Strug of failures.
