I'm disappointed with Fishlegs' character and kinda hate Heather/Fishlegs
Now that I suddenly have a bunch of followers from my last post to lose, I think my most "unpopular" httyd opinion is def not being fond of Fishlegs, and actively hating Heather/Fishlegs.
Lol, just to explain. For Fishlegs, I think his experience and ability to recognise dragons, and study them is rather underutilised. He had a few good scenes with Ruffnut, and I don't think his solo episode with the night terrors was bad it was just moreso there. I think I personally just find most jokes about him being nervous or fat just not funny. I feel like Fishlegs is always talked about as a "sweet" character whilst not doing anything but have a nice comment? Sure it works to tell you he's sweet, but does he ever go out of his way to comfort or understand the riders when they're struggling? When he learns that he shouldn't try to force dragons to stay with him over and over again, does he ever do anything with it? When he and Hiccup hang out, do they actually bond? Ya know, I don't hate him, but there's just so much he could be doing that the other characters do that Fishlegs just doesn't.
What I do hate is 100% Heather/Fishlegs. Is it good rep to show an attractive woman seeing more in a man? Sure. Do I hate on others for liking it? No, absolutely not, that's weird. But I just can't stand it.
For one, Heather just randomly announces a crush on him, after no interaction besides her trapping him in a tree. Then suddenly, after not talking for 2 seasons, they've been sending letters, which would be pretty cute if Fishlegs just weren't so possessive about it. He just decides the edge is the best place for her because he wants to be with her, not because of her situation or fears of being alone. Hiccup seems more concerned with actually showing her that she's accepted on the edge. After that, literally all they do in every scene together is call one another's name.
Then, when Dagur comes back, possessive Fishlegs is in full swing, and I physically cannot watch that scenes where Dagur says to Fishlegs that Heather will be safe with him and Fishlegs says she better be. LIKE DUDE NOT AT ALL YOUR PLACE. I just hate it cause it just such a weird way to talk about someone you're barely in a relationship with. I just think both characters look worse with the relationship. Ruff/fishlegs should have either started earlier or had more scenes settiing them up.
Okay, I'm done. I'll hide from the pitchforks now, mostly just wanted to explain my feelings on it in case I ever mention my disliking Fishlegs, and the idea that it's about weight comes up again. I really hate it when you try to talk about not liking a representative character due to their personality or actions in the story, and it becomes against them physically. Just to be clear, Fishlegs has a very good design. I really like that both he and Meatlegs are in the group AND are used effectively in situations where they can be beneficial, even though they make fat jokes about Fishlegs.
I know it’s never explained in the show, but how the hunters captured some dragons is unfathomable to me:
Seashockers
Catastrophic Quakens
Eruptadon
Submaripper
Shellfire
I recall in one episode it shows that one method to subduing a dragon is luring them into a trap with food then gassing them with dragon root.
I am not confident that would work with a Quaken given how incredibly powerful they are. But the gas method would not work on a tidal class dragon.
I am trying to fathom how dragon hunters found deep sea dragons. Let alone dragged and chained the submaripper, and got the shellfire under control enough to guide it and attach a base of operations to it.
For your larger dragons I imagine the biggest issue was finding them, deep sea dwellers are notoriously quick in the show and we hear from several people that the shellfire was impossible for the dragons to chase.
However once they did, the submaripper has been shown to be sensitive to vibrations from daggers, likely hinting at a type of echo location to track their prey. So the key would be driving it up towards the surface at high tide to an area that takes longer for lowtide to come in. This happens a lot with beached whales were something brings them to the surface towards beaches and they don’t recognise their own size so beach themselves. Essentially what I’m saying the hunters likely did was make a pool with an open end, disrupt the environment to flush the submaripper towards it, then as the sea level fell it was unable to emerge.
I’d assume a similar method was used for the shellfire since they appear to be controlled through Ryker’s hammer thing.
For the eruptidon, it seems to be quite used to human company so the most likely thing is they got close enough to shoot it through the dragon not being startled by their presence. As shown by the arrows left there. Then rolled it away on a large wagon. Probably would have taken a lot longer than the show implies since it’s heavily implied it happened at the top of the island but Tv logic.
Seashockers are quite rare according to Fishlegs so its very possible they aren’t as hunted but just as a thought experiment, I’d say you’d probably do a similar method to what he did. Allow them to surface in a lagoon, block off the exit, and lure them to the surface with fish. It’d be difficult and you’d likely need the net to be a more conducive material like copper so their shocks are contained. As we can see from fishlegs that the shocks aren’t powerful enough to kill so can likely be withstood though likely with some side affects
Catastrophic quakens are ones I’m actually a bit stumped by myself, above I mostly talked about real world fishing methods or the desensitisation of a specific species but the Quakens are naturally hostile. Surprising fast. And intelligent. I really think the only way you do “get” a qaken is if you raise it from an egg which is likely what happened to the two they use to harvest marble. I think the hunters would struggle to go after an adult to the point of the risk being too high.

Ryker had a son, but he died, and it was part of what disqualified him from being considered "chief material" in their tribe's eyes

Essentially, Ryker was not really interested in any of the women from his tribe so his grandfather sent him away on a vouage of sorts to "secure more land" (really, it was because he already favoured Viggo, but Viggo was a few years younger, and he wanted Ryker out of the way while he came of age so Viggo had a better chance of securing more poltical power) However ryker did actually end up meeting a woman he liked. The two of them returned to the hunters to get married. His wife soon giving birth to his son
Ryker was really insistent on her and their son joining him on hunts, to instil the dragon hunting mentality early. Due to that insistence, they were often put in dangerous situations, and one time, rather publicly, Ryker's son was killed by a Monstrous Nightmare, with Viggo also getting injured in that attack and earning a neck scar in the process. Ryker was shoned as a reckless fool, whereas Viggo was praised and hailed as a hero willing to put his life on the line to save his nephew, though unsuccessful.
After that, Ryker's marriage soon dissolved in her eventually leaving, but even to his last days, Ryker can't help but ponder how "perfect" that whole incident was for his brother. His brother, a man who avoided most hunts, just happened to be there in the line of fire, his son happened to be killed outright, yet Viggo, surely the more immediate threat, escaped with only a scar, his grandfather was ready to make Ryker the public fool to his tribe.
Something about the whole situation has always given Ryker some pause, perhaps that was why, when his grandfather called out to him for assistance all those years later, frail and staring down the eye of a nadder with exposed spikes, Ryker did not aim for the belly...

In early season 3, Tuffnut wanted to learn how to play maces and talons…. things got outa hand and ended up going to a tournament that Viggo was hosting and Viggo played with him out of morbid curiosity, tuff was loosing but ran away before a true winner could be found. Neither one of them ever spoke of it again
This is a crack headcaanon a 1000% BUT I will say its suspicious Viggo says “Fishlegs I thought you’d be above name calling.” To a rider he’s never met before kinda like someone with a big mouth and a tendency to over sell personalities may have given some rider info away in exchange for a game with Viggo grimborn. I can see tuff at the very least telling about personalities rather than important info for it.
Wild conspiracy theory: Throk has been working for the Grimborns this whole time.
I sat bolt upright a few nights ago and wrote this. Stay with me, because I think I’m onto something here!
Defenders of the Wing
The Grimborns are able to sneak onto the island and steal the Eruptodon with no one seeing them carrying a huge-ass dragon to their ship. There's no way that they did that without some kind of inside help. Throk is following Mala around, but he is captain of the guard (or at least second-in-command to Mala). He would have been capable of incapacitating the guards, or ensuring those loyal to him were 'on guard' at the right time. "There should be guards here," says Mala when they discover the Great Protector is missing – we never find out where they went. Likely they just abandoned their post or went with the Grimborns, on Throk's command.

Throk is easily able to reach Hiccup once he's been taken by bounty hunters. The way he approaches Hiccup, menacingly and brandishing a knife, are NOT the actions of an ally! If Throk is working for the Grimborns, he's there to bring Hiccup straight to Viggo himself (perhaps Viggo didn't trust that any two-bit bounty hunter would be able to complete the job). The only reason this was foiled was because Krogan wasn't aware of Throk's loyalties, and stole Hiccup for himself.

Shell Shocked
Throk was assigned to guard Viggo on Defenders of the Wing Island.
When Viggo was taken off by Throk, his hands were manacled. But by the time of Ryker's attack, his hands have been freed. Why would Throk have freed his hands unless he was helping him?
Throk is told to keep Viggo locked down while the riders battle Ryker. But by the time they get back, Throk admits that he has slipped away. The only two explanations are that Throk is completely incompetent… or he deliberately released Viggo.
Ruffnut
All of his interactions where he's 'falling in love' with Ruffnut come across as insincere. Assuming Throk is still working for Viggo post-volcano, perhaps he has been told to get close to one of the dragon riders, in an effort to a) get more information about them, and/or b) separate someone who can be used as a hostage.

In conclusion
I've always found Throk to be a bit boring, but he immediately becomes much more interesting if he's been a double agent this whole time! Perhaps he's the Defenders of the Wing equivalent of Johann – playing a long game to ingratiate himself into a community, waiting for the perfect moment to betray them for his own gain.
This is just a silly little idea! I doubt the writers intended any of his actions this way. But it's fun to think about!
I really agree on this potentially being a very interesting character angle for him. I like the idea of him only really caring for the ereuptodon and being shocked when Viggo didn’t just send the riders to be killed in a trial but to distract the defenders, and Viggo may have had to convince him to work for him again when they captured him or threatened to tell mala of his betrayal to let him lose.

Hiccup/Toothless - I adore the mix of lightning within the design, it gives Toothless a lot of stealth as the jagged lines dramatically vary from thin to thick, making his more rounded lines blend in a bit more. The pose is just perfect, just a straight, even flight, typical of a confident Nightfury gliding through the night sky.
Astrid/stormfly - YOU TURNED HER TAIL INTO AN AXE 🤩. I’m literally studying your silhouette design ability because this is incredible. I love how you keep the symmetry of the design standing out whilst adding Astrid away, leaning away from the viewer, gliding your head down through the design! This is such an Astrid design too, whereas Snoutlout and Dagur have similar “intimidation” factors; it's through external flames and symbols. Astrid holds her axe as she rides Stormfly herself alone enough in the face of battle, sure of herself.
Snotlout/hookfang - that being said, of course, Snotlout is epic! Hookfang’s stripes only being drawn with his wings and the flames pointing towards him really draws your eye! And is so Snotlout, the size and sheer power alone in it is so true to him. Lol plus the thumbs pointing towards it, make sure you get his best angle lol
Dagur/Skrill - Ooo, this one is interesting I love the way you use the same Skrill from the Beserker ships but improved on it, kinda like how Dagur rebuilt the tribe. The cleaner look gives it a lot more perspective, like it's no longer a symbol of oppression or cruelty but pride, which works very well for Dagur who takes a lot of pride in his tribe's history and culture.
Heather/Windshear - I LOVE THE HIDDEN DOUBLE AXE, don’t get me wrong I love every bit of this but the hidden double axe in Windshear’s tail is definitely my favourite part of it. The way the spikes curl with her body giving that sharp and silver razorwhip shine is so good! Its actively mesmerising to look at! Plus I love how she has shorter tribal markings than Dagur that are more stubble like she’s just starting to embrace her heritage!
Twins/ Bar and Belch - I love that they’re the only ones with colour and texture + not towards the centre it really sets them apart from the other whilst strengthening their bond. You did a great job showing off minor differences between the two as well like Tuffnut’s brads being twisted a bit tighter!

I've been rewatching the whole dragon riders series with my friend (he's watching for the first time) and being the dnd nerds we are we started to assign various classes and different abilities and skills to characters that would suit them if they were dnd characters

This is a really cool idea though, A fair few of the characters do have “wiki” pages but I’d love to see them ranked and put into more detailed categories. Heather my love deserves her rightful place above everyone/J lol I know she at least ranks below Viggo but hey she handled herself pretty well against Krogan.
Anyway ty for reaching out, feel no pressure moving forward from me or being inspired by any of my headcannons. Though I may go looking to see if its on Tumblr cause it sounds like a cool idea! 🤩
Toothless likes to take naps on roofs and tilted beams, and the riders regularly have to fix a cave in or damage from Toothless rolling over in his sleep or underestimating his weight.
I love affordable food that tastes good lol unique take I’m aware but the co-op (I think Americas call em bodegas?) sells these chocolate milk drinks for like 1.50 that are so good and I’m basically single handedly supporting their business cause you’re a god tier company if you’re looking at this economy and making your products affordable and not disgusting.
