The coalition she thought would pierce it â and faith that it will happen â are in pieces.
In addition to the boundless terror caused by the current President-elect, I am deeply grieving the loss of my hope that there would be a Madam President taking the oath in January.

Priorities
The United States is a police state. Thatâs not hyperbole. Yesterdayâs news - another unarmed Black man shot while directly obeying police orders, while offering no resistance - is not some outlier, some rare occurrence. This happens again and again, and there are almost never repercussions for the police involved. And I remind: this occurs in a country that has imprisoned a higher percentage of its population than any other.
And yet the uncritical hero-worship of police continues. Yes, the police do risk their lives to do their job. So do farm laborers, social workers, loggers, truckers, construction workers, and many others. There are a HUGE number of people in this country who risk their lives by getting up and going to work everyday, many of them moreso than police, and all of these people contribute to our society and their communities.
Of course some cops are good people and its a tragedy when they lose their lives, but thatâs just as true of many, many others. And yet at the same time, unlike these people in other jobs, they rarely face repercussions when they fuck up, even when they kill people. They are not held responsible, they are frequently placed on paid leave during investigations that, all too often, find them innocent of any wrongdoing because we have a system that protects and rewards the police at the expense of the people. While, again, Iâm aware that there are some cops who are good people, the system as a whole is seriously broken and I find it hard to respect any kind âpro-police/blue lives matterâ until the police are disarmed, demilitarized, and most important, have real independent community oversight and held responsible by the society they are in - just like everyone else.
The Black Lives Matter organization created a ten point plan to work against police violence in this country. I agree with it entirely, and I hope it is taken seriously during this election on both local and national levels. Iâm going to paste those ten points here so you donât even have to click on a link (though you should definitely go to their website and read more):
-Ending âbroken windowsâ policing, which aggressively polices minor crimes in an attempt to stop larger ones
-Using community oversight for misconduct rather than having police decide what consequences officers face
-Making standards for reporting police use of deadly force
-Independently investigating and prosecuting police misconduct
-Having the racial makeup of police departments reflect the communities they serve
-Requiring officers to wear body cameras
-Providing more training for police officers
-Ending for-profit policing practices
-Ending the police use of military equipment
-Implementing police union contracts that hold officers accountable for misconduct
All too often progressive voices are criticized for being vague, having no specific action plan, being too fractured. The plan created by Black Lives Matter is specific, positive, and workable.
As usual, there are a lot of big issues we are facing as a country this election season. And maybe not so much as usual, we have the circus of the election itself. And of course many of these issues are important, but the relationship between the police and the people they are supposed to serve is at a crisis point, it has been for a long time, and it needs to be the priority right now.

I bought a dog. I think itâs important to have a dog, âcause if youâre taking a nap in the afternoon and a squirrel wanders into your backyard, you donât want to sleep through something like that.

The whole âIâm not like other girlsâ movement should really be called the âI donât want men to treat me the way they treat other womenâ movement because thatâs what it really is. Women know that a girl who wears makeup is as respectable as a girl who wears none. A girl whoâs played every Final Fantasy game is as respectable as a girl who digs Candy Crush. A woman who started her own law firm is as respectable as a single mom who works in the service industry. A girl who enjoys casual sex is as respectable as a girl who has never had her first kiss. A lesbian who has no interest in men is as respectable as a straight girl who loves her boyfriend. A girl who reads People magazine is as respectable as a girl who reads Dostoyevsky.
Women have been extensively shamed for saying âIâm not like other girlsâ when what they are really saying, maybe without knowing it, is âIâve heard the way men talk about specific types of women, typically women who do things that they donât understand or relate to, and I really, really want them to separate me from that and see me as a person who is worthy of being respected.â How much respect a woman gets from men is very rarely indicative of how much she deserves.
âI donât want you to treat me the way you treat other girls, because you treat other girls like shit.â
How female friends have turned sexting into an act of bonding and empowerment
"This always consensual practice is now popular in her close friend group of about 8. Kelly says she exchanges about 2 to 3 a week: Some standbys include the âclassic bathtub frextââââjust legs in the tub and whatever 1992 era YA literature sheâs readingâââor a mouth-down shot of her boobs in a very low-cut âDolly Parton dress.â I just learned about this phenomenon and I love it.
White poet Michael Derrick Hudson's use of the Chinese pen name Yi-Fen Chou was an act of yellowface that is part of a long tradition of white voices drowning out those of color in the literary world.
I've been trying to figure out how to reblog this extremely unnecessarily gendered article about supporting a person with chronic pain for a while, because parts of it really resonated with me, but I keep getting stuck on why this dude had to write an article about men supporting their wives instead of just people supporting their partners. A points that particularly stood out to me (slightly edited). 3. Because people in chronic pain have to be good at ignoring their own pain, their maximum sneaks up on them and on you. [...] Before I learned to read the signs in my wife, it would seem like her breaking point would come out of nowhere. We tried to get her to tell us when she was coming up on her limit, but she only notices about 30 percent of the time, and that is after years of coaching and encouraging. 10. The key thing to remember is that pain builds even while you are managing to ignore it. The longer your person is in pain, the more of it they experience and the less they can block it out. So what would be an objective level 5 pain, your person can block out to make it a level 2. But when they are no longer able to block it, it will come back as 6-8. Beware of this whiplash phenomenon.
