Threadbare features:

One-sided(?) tension(??) with the guy you’re doomed to kill!  

The machinations of a deeply stupid meritocracy, which asks “what if we put wealthy art patrons in charge of a communications & intelligence agency?”  

Running errands against your will!  

High effort low art! Low effort high art? Low effort low art. It still took me nine months. And it’s not even done!  

What I can only describe as a slideshow with quicktime events scored by industrial noise metal!

This is like… a pre-alpha demo. It covers maybe a third of the story, and its code is held together by duct tape and a wish. Mostly this is an excuse to get other people to break it so I know what to fix. Enjoy!

I pushed some quality-of-life and accessibility tweaks for Threadbare... You can toggle the typewriter animations and expand the dialogue chains all at once and selectively mute the UI/vox sfx now... never been a better time to bother Kairos, if you haven't already

after i made my wooden doll, i was musing about what other unusual materials i might use for a bjd. my partner suggested paper, and also gave me access to their craft paper collection -> i made this.

she is almost entirely made of paper & cardboard. the joints are wooden beads & worbla, because i did figure out a way to make ball joints out of paper, but it really was not worth the effort. all her limbs have tubes of rolled-up cardboard in them to keep the structure sturdy, and the origami flowers are glued around those.

this is extremely different from any doll i've made before, and i had so much fun working with pretty papers & figuring out how to turn them into a poseable 3d object.

Almost Real's POP CULTURE issue is live on Kickstarter! Time to introduce the cute yet vaguely horrible cover critter, a living gachapon toy bioengineered by scud aliens!

The wild gachapede is a segmented worm-like arthropoid that lives parasitically inside a bivalve-like "giant diatom" in shallow, sandy-bottomed seas of the scud homeplanet. The giant diatom's shell is made of two interlocking lid-like frustules of transparent silica, allowing light to pass through to its veins of symbiotic unicellular algae. Much like the microscopic diatoms of earth, giant diatoms reproduce in two different ways, asexually and sexually. Asexual reproduction is carried out by the two frustules separating and each generating a new frustule, a phase during which they may be parasitized by the gachapede. But because the new frustule is always smaller than the old one, like the lid and body of a box, eventually one lineage of giant diatoms is too small to safely carry out asexual reproduction. These tiny ones will finally give up and reproduce sexually by releasing sperm and eggs that will join to create new larvae and maximum-size giant diatoms. The parasitic gachapede has a relatively low impact on a large healthy giant diatom, as it lays dormant until the frustules split, surviving off the "bloodstream" of unicellular algae.

Scuds have used the unique properties of these two organisms in combination with their civilization's advanced biotech to create a collectable toy; twisting the basic bodyplan of the gachapede into thousands of variations of "funny little guys." The wild diatom has been modified into a "gachapod," which is far more spacious and transparent than its wild counterpart. To obtain the toy, you crack open the two frustles and recycle the gachapod (which will now grow into two new pods). However, once removed from its food source, the gachapede typically only lives a couple days at most. At the end of its life, its cuticle calcifies and makes them into a rigid figurine. Scuds who are really into the gachapede scene will pose their gachapede into a desirable pose like a insect collector pinning a bug.

unprivating my bloggie for a sec to just say. no hate to any individual but all the self-reassuring tags and comments i’ve seen on this incredibly simple, value-neutral post i made to encourage myself that are like “this doesn’t work if you have chronic illness” or “depression complicates this” or worse “oh so you’re telling me i have a. 2/3 chance to fail no thanks” or some other kind of miscalculation of chance here

no. it doesn’t work like that. and since this is idpol world i might as well also offer this fact: i deal with both of these things and this only makes this chart more pertinent

like let’s say you have seriously chronic as fuck fatigue but are generally ambulatory. maybe even to the degree where you find yourself bed bound sometimes as soon as you wake up. be gentle with yourself, but this still applies. try to get out of bed. if you can’t, or or simply can’t bring yourself to for some reason. that’s an X for now but an X isn’t a negative thing in this case at all, you just didn’t perform an action that was a beneficial action because it wouldn’t have been beneficial for you at that time or you couldn’t bring yourself to do it. which is Fine because you tried. i don’t like this mentality about disability because i believe it survives on the belief that giving something a shot and “failing” is more humiliating or indicative of wicked character than just resigning to not giving anything a shot. what the fuck is up with that?

we got to learn to gentle-parent ourselves a little bit guys. if you we the most simplistic flowchart in the world and your first thought is along the lines of “well that logic does not apply because X Y Z” do you feel comforted by that? i’m disabled, and that doesn’t comfort me. that terrifies me. i know especially depression makes it seem like that’s the only road worth taking, and ive been there and i still struggle with that, but even if you fucking hate yourself and are in constant pain, acknowledge the logical path here. and eventually you may find no comfort in the road that leads to you to remain wondering forever
