The fight against AIDS misinformation
York commemorates with candlelight vigil
Vanessa Dullabh Contributor
Radha Bhardwaj fights ignorance. - Wayne Hudson
December 1, 2011 marked International AIDS Awareness Day. This day holds a special place in the hearts of those who are affected by HIV and a source of information for those who do not understand the outcomes and specifics of AIDS. The Health
Education and Promotion and AIDS Committee of York Region were proud supporters of this event by hosting a candlelight vigil on Campus Walk at York University.
The event aimed to question current sexual disease-related policies for those affected by AIDS and confront a stigma of ignorance often advocated by most people on the subject matter.
Health studies student Andrea explains how her life was changed when she accidentally found out her maternal grandparents were both affected by the virus.
“My family hid the truth from me, but it wasn’t anything to be ashamed of because it was contracted through a medical blood transfusion,” says Andrea. Cases like these are swept under the rug and unaddressed locally and globally. “My mom didn’t tell me because she didn’t want my father’s side of the family to know, they created a social stigma within the family.”
Andrea understands the stigma comes from the history of impoverished countries, drug users, and the blood industry; however she expressed her interest towards the overarching stigma against the gay community. It is easy to believe AIDS is a disease specific to Church and Wellesley; but unlike people, AIDS does not discriminate.
The idea of “not in my backyard” is a concerning issue to the Western world as invited speaker Radha Bhardwaj, executive director of AIDS Committee of York Region explained. Bhardwaj says that since we live in a developed nation, it is easy to think that HIV/AIDS occurs only in places like Africa. Bhardwaj pleads with the public to spread education about the issue because it is preventable. Lack of precaution and education is the underlying cause of contraction, followed by a lifetime of stress and stigma. “We are humans and social beings. We cannot live with isolation in society.”
Although the stigmas exist, the event focused on overcoming this existing social backlash. Bhardwaj was invited to the candlelight vigil as a way to represent the community and spread her knowledge of the growing trends within York region.
The event challenged common misconceptions of marginalized groups including sex workers, drug users, and the gay community. The challenges of race, culture, citizenship, and class form a stream of beliefs that the Health Education committee is working to battle and distribute broad information which would reduce stigma and ultimately provide a safe space in society for those affected by HIV/AIDS

Canada knows that Jordan Clark can dance!
2011-09-14 11:55
By Vanessa Dullabh
Jordan Clark is crowned winner of So You Think You Can Dance Canada
The contemporary dancer Jordan Clark is the winner of the fourth season’s So You Think You Can Dance Canada. 1.6 million votes determined that the 19-year old girl from Tottenham, Ontario would win the prize of $100,000 and a Chevrolet Cruze. We caught up with Jordan right after her big win to see what she had to say about the experience: Vervegirl: How does it feel to be a winner? Jordan Clark: I am so excited! I have never won anything in my entire life. I started dancing when I was 5 or 6 years old. I remember being 7 years old saying that I want to be dancer. Dreams come true. VG: What are your plans with the big prizes of $100,000 and a Chevy Cruze? JC: I‘m not too sure yet. I kind of want to take a vacation, but I really want to keep dancing. I just don’t want to stop. Maybe I’ll take a date with my bed and watch some movies, but other than that, I have no idea. VG: What was your favourite performance of the season? JC: I loved when Joey and I performed the theatre piece, with the popcorn. It showed the goofy side of Joey and I, and that is exactly who we are and what our relationship is. It was fun to show it on stage. VG: Is it difficult getting into character for some of the dances? JC: I actually love acting, so it isn’t really difficult at all. My dance teacher really taught me how to perform while dancing.
VG: What is the one thing you won’t miss about SYTYCD Canada? JC: Hmm, I really loved every part of it. Maybe the long rehearsals and lack of sleep, but even that was a lot of fun and it made the experience totally worth it! I am so thankful for everything. For anyone who missed the season finale of So You Think You Can Dance, an encore presentation will air on MuchMusic Friday, September 16 at 6 p.m. EST (visit muchmusic.com to confirm local broadcast times).

Material Girl interview with Kelly Osbourne
Material Girl, Living in a Material World
Thu, 2011-09-08 15:48
By Vanessa Dullabh If you haven’t heard by now, the original Material Girl: Madonna, and daughter Lola have launched their own clothing line titled after one of Madonna’s famous songs “Material Girl.” The Material Girl Collection is the perfect combination of style, fashion and value. Best of all, their poster-girl is Kelly Osbourne. Who better to represent the stylish brand than an original Brit who knows LA inside out? The best thing about the collection is that is draws from different inspirations such as old school rock n’ roll to modern sophisticated hipster. We got the exclusive from Kelly O. at The Bay to find out some juicy details of what Material Girl means to her and what are the fashion Dos and Don’ts.
Tyler Medeiros teaching me his moves. Clearly I don't have the same swag LOL
There’s this thing called love. It’s supposed to brighten up your life and give you butterflies. While this all may be true, keep in mind that love also festers in the hearts of humans. Humans are difficult creatures, because although love is a manifestation through humans, love is also an emotion. Emotions are controlled and represented differently depending on the human. Love is an emotion that humans control in expressing but do not control in developing. Use it appropriately and never for revenge because this thing called love can dampen your spirits and turn those butterflies into scorpions.

CD Album Reviews
By Vanessa Dullabh
The Vaccines – What Did You Expect From The Vaccines
This album tells the stories of every young person’s journey through the difficult times of their youth. Appropriately, it is entitled “What Did You Expect From the Vaccines.” This title and album is reflective of The Vaccines and their true work and artists. More importantly, the stories are told through catchy lyrics and a tune to follow suit. At first glance, the titles of the songs may seem a little risky, but “What Did You Expect From the Vaccines?” To classify the sound, it would be a little bit of Indie with a bit of classic rock. A few of the songs remind me of something you would hear as a soundtrack to a good movie about relationships and friendship. I would easily recommend The Vaccines as a playlist for the person who is looking for a new band and some new background music for their own life.

The Cults – 7”
This album has easily provided me with one of my new summer songs. Although their sound is very different from what we are used to, the sounds and beats are undeniably easy on the ears. This album is not meant for the person who wants to get up and dance, however if you are the type of person who needs music to perform any type of task (including homework), this is a perfect album. The sounds are not too strong to distract you, but they are strong enough for you to recognize The Cults. My favourite thing about the album is that the vocals do not overpower the actual music. The instruments are equally as prominent, and that speaks a lot about the band. The sound is a bit Indie which incorporates a dynamic female and male duo, which makes it easy to sway your body. There are a couple of songs that have me wondering if we are back in the sixties (in the best way possible). The vocals are not necessarily strong or powerful, but if you are a fan of Indie, why not bring this album out to your next backyard jam.

Pitbull –Planet Pit
What can we say about Pitbull, besides that Planet Pit is a simple reflection of the classic Pitbull we know and love. These songs are no different from every other Pitbull song you have loved to shake it to while in your room. If you are anything like me, you have Pitbull on your work-out playlist because of his upbeat tunes and catchy lyrics. This album is appropriately entitled “Planet Pit” because he invites many artists into his world such as Marc Anthony, T-Pain, Enrique Iglesias, Sean Paul, Chris Brown and that is only a few. I have a feeling Pitbull is going to be played everywhere from the clubs straight to your ipod. Embrace Planet Pit and get your dancing shoes on for this one.

Behind The Lens with Tyler Medeiros
By Vanessa Dullabh
At 16 years old, Tyler Medeiros is quickly winning the hearts of young girls through his music, irresistible smile and smooth dance moves. It’s no surprise, since his older cousins, Shawn Desman and Danny Fernandes, have conquered our airwaves with their music and talent. Tyler has something special to bring to the table, because he is undoubtedly talented and willing to pursue music as a full-time career. His latest single, “Please Don’t Go,” is the perfect combination of the old and new, taking influences from KC and The Sunshine Band. Born and raised in Toronto, this heartbreaker represents the Canadian pop-music scene in the best way possible and is perfect for our first-ever cover Vervedude! I hung out with Tyler during his photo shoot to find out what drives his captivating smile… VERVEGIRL: What is the best part about being Tyler Medeiros? TYLER MEDEIROS: It has to be all my family members and friends. I have a lot of love around me, and that keeps me happy and grounded. VG: What is your favourite subject in school? TYLER: Gym! But since I do online schooling, I don’t get to really have a gym class. To make up for that, I get to do my usual routines - this involves a lot of running around and mainly hanging out with friends. VG: What and who are QTees? TYLER: Well, one of my fans asked me to come up with a name for them because some other artists have names for their fans. I was sitting at home thinking, and I came up with “QTees.” It’s a play on the word “cutie” and the letter “T” for my name, Tyler. It became a trending topic on Twitter the same day I came up with it! #QTees VG: What is the best quality in a girlfriend? TYLER: She definitely has to be sweet, respectful, fun, loving ,and has to have a good sense of humour. I make a lot of “dumb” jokes because I have a weird sense of humour, and if she doesn’t find them funny, we won’t be able to laugh together. VG: What is “swag”? TYLER: Swag is what you wear, and how you wear it. You have to show your personality in what you wear, and when you pull it off, it’s swag. VG: What would you do if you weren’t able to be an entertainer? TYLER: I would be a football player! I love track and cross-country, so I’m pretty fast. Tackling is also a bonus because I’m not afraid to get down and dirty. VG: If you had the chance to work with one artist, dead or alive, who would it be? TYLER: Hands down, it would be Michael Jackson. There is definitely some of his influence in my own dance moves, fashion and inspiration in my music.
