My journey to BQ starts next week! #bostonorbust #runnerscommunity #brooklynrunning #wineglassmarathon
Step two: choose a good training plan - and stick with it! I'm going with Pfitzinger's 70 miles or less 24 week schedule from his book Advanced Marathoning. This book is a classic and I highly recommend it for the training science alone. It presents 12, 18, and 24 week schedules for 55 miles or less, 70 miles or less, and more than 70 miles a week. There's also a multiple marathoning section. Here's an example week from my first week: Monday: rest or cross Tuesday: 7 miles with 10 x 100m strides Wednesday: 10 miles Thursday: recovery 5 Friday: 10 miles Saturday: recovery 5 Sunday: long run - 13 miles Today I'm going out and running for fun. Probably 10 miles, but I still have freedom from the plan so we'll see how it feels. Run wild!
Qualifying for Boston plan! Step one: choose a fast course I'm already signed up for NYC (and super pumped) this November, but it's not exactly an easy course; at least not for an average runner like me. I want the odds in my favor so I'm going for a flat course with a historically high number of qualifiers. I live in Brooklyn, so I was looking for "faster" courses in my area and narrowed it down to two: Steamtown and Wineglass. Both look like beautiful country courses, boast a high percentage of qualifiers, and have great reviews on marathonguide.com, but I chose Wineglass because it has official pacing groups and it's smaller. I think it will be fun to go from racing with 2,500 runners to 47,000 a month later in NYC. (It doesn't hurt that it's in NY wine country either.) Am I a little nervous I'm running two marathons a month apart? Naw. I think that will be an interesting experiment in itself. I'll probably kick myself for that later. Run wild runners!

Can any average runner qualify for Boston?
That is the question! Qualifying for Boston is a goal that many distance runners aspire to, and one that I've been daydreaming about for years. Why haven't I tried yet? Meh, I guess I've been afraid to. That's a real honest answer. I could say that my career, school, and life in general has put time constraints and limits on what I can achieve, but that would be an excuse. The real reason is because I haven't committed, because I've been afraid that I don't have what it takes. What does it take? For a 32 year old woman I need to run a Boston qualifying event in 3 hours and 35 minutes or less. (Of course that doesn't guarantee entry, but I will have qualified). I'm an average runner. I don't have a lot of natural speed. I've heard many seasoned runners say that anyone can qualify if they put in the proper training, lifestyle, and dedication. I'm going to take the next 6 months of my life and see if this is true.

30 Day Detox
Even though it’s still frigid outside in NYC, it’s technically springtime, and we’ll all be enjoying the sunshine and pushing for our personal records on the road before we know it. Time to drop a few lbs and give our bodies the spring cleaning they deserve!
Today I’m starting a 30 day detox following a plan from a book called Detox 4 Women by Natalia Rose. I’ve followed her Raw Food Detox Diet with great results in the past, so I’m psyched to try a plan specifically designed for women.
Check out the book at Detox the World and stay tuned for details.
Equinox is: my monthly splurge, my home away from home, and completely fabulous. The Brooklyn Heights location is almost like my own private gym on a Sunday afternoon. Probably because everyone else has the common sense/drive to get there before 3pm, but what can I say? It's never too late in the day to get your work out on.
