Cats 101: Siberian : Video : Animal Planet

Whenever we're out and about with Indy, the inevitable question is always, 'What breed is he?' ... in fact, he is so rare that our vet who has been practising for 20 years had never seen one before. All internet searches will agree that the breed is very 'dog-like' in nature; following people around and greeting you when you return home but for a quick video introduction, Animal Planet sums up the facts. If you're really set on a Siberian cat, breeders are easy to find and research- just make sure they are reputable, recommended by others and vets and are registered with TICA.

Chewing Wires

In the first few months of Indy joining us, we must have lost around 8 ipod cables. Yes, he had a penchant for wire chewing, and not just any wire but white Apple wires seemed to be his favourite. He chewed our friend's headphones when he was staying with us- (we felt so bad we gave him a new set) and a family's charger cable which with some sticky tape held onto life for about a month longer. We weren't sure what the explanation was for the wire chewing, we thought it was a mixture of boredom and a kitten's curiosity so we invested in some chew toys for cats. What really helped though was a large hollow cable wrap which we added around our visible cables. Made of plastic, it has a corrugated feel which helped to prevent major chewing attacks and this coupled with more play sessions, definitely saved our wires and bank accounts!

A kitten named Arthur

Even though Arthur (as Indy was named back then) was the cutest, fluffiest ball of fur I had ever seen, I was still apprehensive about owning a cat as a pet. Growing up in a household of dog lovers, I was more accustomed to yappy, energetic dogs- a huge Samoyed named Pinocchio who was my friend from 5-18 yrs of age, to my two darling Tibetan Spaniels, Baloo and Simba who have been with me since 2006. I did not know how I would cope with an independent, nonchalant, meowing feline who wouldn't greet me upon returning home, play games with me or keep me warm. How very wrong I was! 

This blog is about my learnings with Indy as our pet cat and companion and how we have adapted our life to involve him. Through my various posts and photos over the months, I have had many questions about him so what better place than a blog for my memories and a personal way of sharing our experiences.
