You guys are dangerously close to realizing specifically what kinds of people they keep from voting and why.

I want to drill this into everybody’s head:

The United States of America has the highest prison population in the world

Black Americans and Latin people make up the majority of this population (many of whom are non-violent offenders)

Federal Prisons in America require that their state keeps their prisons at a maximum occupancy at all times.

The 13th amendment did not entirely abolish slavery…just one form of it. It remains legal through industrial prison system

Here’s what’s really perverse: prisoners, who cannot vote, still get counted in the U.S. Census. The more prisoners a county has, the more representation it gets, even though the prisoners cannot vote. See how that works? The more black and brown people they lock up, the more government resources and political representation they get. Even though those prisoners have no say and cannot vote.

If county-A has a population of 50 voters but no prisons, and county-B has a population of 50 voters and 50 prisoners, the county with the prisoners gets more government funding and more political represention. This is sometimes called “prison gerrymandering” and it is used in redistrictring.

Not so fun Fact: Southern states that reliably vote for Republicans also have the highest prison population in the United States. (source). So mass incarceration is a double whammy. It’s both a form of voter suppression and a tool to strengthen white people’s political power.

I just had the best encounter with a child at Kmart. I was in the aisle shopping, and this girl and her dad come around the corner. The girl sees me and excitedly exclaims “There’s a human here!!” to which the father replied “Yes, there’s humans everywhere.”

So I finally watched Love Victor and I have thoughts. I avoided it for awhile mostly because I was worried I would have too high expectations. I loved SVTHSA so much. Like. So much. Love Simon was great (it wasn't perfect, but most adaptations aren't) and having liked both of those, I read Leah On The Off Beat, which was.... a mistake. I hated it. And I figured, going into it, I wouldn't like it. Because I don't like Leah. She's terrible, both in Love Simon and Svthsa. I didn't like her as a character, and that dislike was only amplified in LotOB.

But that's not really what this post is about, I'm getting off topic. The point is, I was afraid to watch Love Victor because I didn't want to hate it. And I actually didn't. I ended up liking it so much more than I thought I would, and I think that's mostly because I loved every single character (even Lake. I thought maybe she would be like Leah, but she was so much better)

And like Love Simon, I have some issues (ie; give me a bi character. Please, I'm begging you.) but overall, I am so excited about season 2. I need more. I wanna see Lake and Felix (gosh I love Felix) figure out their relationship, and I wanna see how Armando and Isabel and Pilar react to Victor's coming out and I NEED MORE BENJI.
