A/N: This idea wouldn’t leave me alone, so I wrote this at work. I feel so wicked, lol. Maybe I’ll turn this into a series of one shots someday, but for now…
Sango was very jealous of that mirror shard.
Well, it wasn’t a shard, exactly. It was the size of both her hands palmed side by side, but she knew it was just a shard compared to what the whole thing must have been like.
A strange man gave this to me on the road, her father had told her mother upon coming home. A foreigner. With some difficulty, he told me he wanted to thank me for killing the demon centipede, but if you ask me… He’d paused, seemingly lost in thought. If you ask me, I think he only wanted to get rid of this.
The Chief had kept his mirror shard for as long as he lived, and Sango had retrieved it from their old hut when she’d been back to her empty village with Inuyasha’s group. She was always curious about it, but her father, in spite of liking the thing, seemed to think it was cursed in some way. He never let her or Kohaku touch it.
In the dead of night, Sango gazed at it under the firelight as her new friends slept. Instead of seeing her own reflection, she saw a familiar baboon pelt. Stunned, she watched as it became stained red, the tip of her own blade emerging from it.
From Naraku’s back, she realized, her nose almost glued to the cold surface of the mirror. In the vision, her blade had ran through the spider.
She wanted to have the complete mirror. She wanted to rejoice in watching the entire scene, not just a piece of it.
It teased her. She was angry.
Feeling Inuyasha’s suspicious eyes on her, Sango quickly put the shard away.
He wore the strangest, most colorful clothes I’ve ever seen, her father had said about the foreigner, talking more to himself than her mother. E-ri-sed, he tested the word in his tongue. He said this is the mirror of Erised, whoever this person is.
That night, Sango dreamt of killing.
