I AM CRYING I JUST READ THE ARTICLE ABOUT THE NEW OVA COMING OUT IN FEB 2022 AND KYO AND TOHRU ARE GOING TO BE VOICING IT!!!! PLUS!! TOHRU AND KYO ARE GOING TO HAVE THEIR OWN EPISODE AS WELL!!
itty bitty art analysis because both takaya and ibata are obsessed with drawing as many parallels between kyoru and akigure as possible and i love that for them:
kyo and tohru’s relationship is new and it’s exciting and it’s wholesome in a way only teenage first love can be. they are each other’s confidant, which is notable for tohru in particular, whose hubris lies in her selflessness. they are bathed in light here, utilizing the sunset motif that represents their unspoken feelings for one another. kyo, a character who is bad with words, is performing a simple act of kindness and expressing vulnerability in the ways he can, holding out a pure white flower to comfort tohru. it is also notable that in moments like these kyo and tohru are always on the same level, driving home the equality and willingness to compromise and radically accept one another for who they are that is the foundation of their relationship.
in contrast, shigure and akito’s relationship is dark and twisted and draws from decades of baggage on top of centuries of family history. they are shrouded in darkness and backlit by a simple, traditional lighting fixture. as always, akito forces shigure to lower himself to their level, establishing their power in the relationship. the flower is red: carnal, adult, passionate, blood-soaked. shigure begins the scene by offering akito the flower, commenting that they might not have seen one before (implying that akito may not have gone to high school, further ostracizing akito from mainstream contemporary japanese society) with the intent to evoke the childhood memory we see in the cold open. akito attempts vulnerability by asking about it and shigure takes this chance to assert his individuality by playing off akito’s insecurities, dismissing akito and grabbing power back.
shigure and akito’s relationship is defined by their power struggle while kyo and tohru’s is defined by egalitarianism. they are opposites in every way: age, intention, their respective places in traditional vs contemporary society, the insular taboo surrounding kyo vs the societal taboo surrounding akito (wrt akito and shigure, as far as the public is concerned, being in a homosexual relationship). it’s incredible that both these relationships can exist in the same piece and compliment each other so well, both writing-wise and visually.
I will never understand people who hate Tooru for being feminine, who cries for others and with others, and being nice to people. Do they understand that she lost everything, and yet she doesn't lose her beautiful personality and decides to move on? That girl is a sun, one who tries to move on because she only wants to be happy and share her happiness for the memory of a mother who loved her and raised her with affection.
kakeru: yun yun remember the time you dared me to lick the swing set?
yuki: no. i said, “manabe, don’t lick the swing set, you’re gonna get sick” and you said “shut up you girly lookin student council rat i’ll do whatever the fuck i want”
kakeru: right anyways—
tohru: this bottle is so fancy, do you think it’s perfume? it also smells like alcohol...
uotani: *grabs & chugs*
uotani: it’s perfume.
kyo: yeah sometimes i’ll drink milk from the container
tohru: WAIT S-STRAIGHT from the c-container...?
kyo:
hatsuharu:
kyo: tohru.
kyo: i’m texting tohru to ask her to dinner, how should i text it? “let’s get dinner?” or “do you want to get dinner?”
momiji: go with let’s get dinner, so you’re like assertive and confident
kyo: okay *starts typing*
yuki: wait no hold on now that sounds kind of aggressive, you don’t want to be the kind of guy that’s like “let’s. get. dinner.” like you’re some sort of caveman
momiji: right yeah you’re supposed to ask her to dinner not tell her to dinner
hatori: just go with “do you want to get dinner?”
kyo: perfect *types*
yuki: wait no actually now you sound kind of like a pussy
hatsuharu: the last thing you wanna be is the overly masculine type like “LETS GET DINNER IM THE BREAD WINNER BITCH”
momiji: women also love assertiveness though
shigure: okay say “dinner would be something that i would enjoy taking you on if you were also interested in attending the meal”
momiji: yes the more words the better
ayame: no say “i would like nothing more than to take you to the finest restaurant in town for a lovely meal that we call dinner milady—“
kyo: s-should i send that in a voicemail?
hero: FUCK THAT. say “dinner tonight, 7pm, take it or leave it, you bitch” cuz she’s playing games. sign it, seal it, deliver it.
kyo: sensei said that if i don’t try to relate more positively around my surroundings i’m going to die.
kyo: [sees shigure and yuki]
kyo: i’m going to die.
Sees Tohru: Never mind. My skin is clear, my heart is healed, spring has come,
hatsuharu: what are we? we used to be attractive carefree humorous side characters, and now?
momiji: now, we have depth and character development
hatsuharu: *disgusted*
shigure: um hatori can you see right now? where are your glasses?
hatori: don’t know, stopped wearing them.
shigure: why?
hatori: i don’t care what’s happening anymore.

What are some of your favourite Kyo x Tohru moments?
I have a lot. Shall I do a top 5? Least to most favorite?
MANGA SPOILER WARNING
5. Tohru’s confession
This one has less to do with Kyo and Tohru and more with Tohru herself. This scene was such a turning point for her character. It was the first time she demanded something when at the beginning of the series, she would have backed down after Kyo rejected her. But she made it very clear that she wanted him. Of course, the scene went downhill with Kyo calling her delusional which is why it’s last on the list, but I love it because of Tohru’s character development and the fact that she stood up for herself. I’m gonna get chills when I see this animated.
4. The Sheet Hug
This one is so sweet because it’s the first time Kyo risked transforming just to hold her. Being a distant guy, this was a big deal for him. He finally found someone he connected with so much that he had to hug her while she was crying. It makes me feel soft. It was after this scene that throughout the remainder of the series they were like “oh, shit, we really like each other” and that caused for many cute and awkward moments between them haha.
3. Kyo’s True Form
You can’t have a fav Kyo and Tohru moments without this one. It’s what kickstarted their romantic plot line. I love how Tohru’s motivations for begging Kyo to stay with her all came back to the time he told her it’s okay to be selfish sometimes. That lead her to ask that he come home. It goes to show how much Kyo has influenced her because without him telling her that, she might have never had the guts to demand that he stay. I also loved how Kyo was so happy to hear Tohru say the words that his mother wouldn’t give him. And the fact that he was in tears and then he hugs her…makes me bawl every time.
2. Their First Kiss
The first time I read the manga, this was the scene that stood out most to me. It was so intense. I was sobbing when Kyo thought she was dying and the last thing he said to her was that she was delusional for loving him and he would never get the chance to tell her that he had been wrong and that he loved her. It reminded him of how he watched her mom die and now the same was happening with her. Then she wakes up, says she’s okay, and he kisses her. So sweeeeeet!!! I like their second kiss better though because Tohru was passed out during this. I’m like “Kyo, you stole her first kiss”, but it’s not his fault because he didn’t know she was knocked out again lol.
1. “We’re already holding hands.”
Of course, the moment they actually decide to be together is going to be the best! First of all, I love the 80′s rom-com cliche of him running after her lol. I was a sobbing mess when Kyo finally told her that he loved her. And I think the major reason for that is that it was the most he’d ever showed his true feelings. It was such a vulnerable moment for him and that made the scene so moving. I love how Tohru was with him when the curse broke. The events that followed after that with him yanking off his bracelet and Tohru collecting all the beads. DAM. I cry just thinking about it.
Thanks for the question, anon. I had fun with this one!
like if you think kyo could beat the ocean in a fight hands down
every furuba fans now, after they saw the trailer pics and kyo's tears:
kyo: hey do you guys have happy meals
worker: yes we do
kyo: can i get one of those without the meal
worker: um
kyo: please
Can we just appreciate the different ways Yuki and Machi protect each other from their respective anxieties? Because we get Yuki breaking the chalk for Machi, and it’s a beautiful moment. It’s small and quiet and gentle, he doesn’t say anything about it or draw attention, he just sees something he knows triggers her anxiety and takes action without making a fuss, because he sees her and understands her.
And then you’ve got Yuki having a panic attack in a locked closet and Machi grabs a fucking chair and SMASHES THE GODDAMN DOOR OPEN because she knows he’s in a bad place and she’s getting him out of there pronto.
God, I love them.
