lrt now imagine yuki having to testify in court. what good would this even do for the family it would simply be retraumatizing, besides the fact that narratively it makes no sense. not that i think akito's ending makes a whole lot of narrative sense to begin with but the fact that she does try to live a normal life after all that does track
Fruits Basket: abusive systems perpetuate themselves, and they will continue to do so until conscious efforts are made by many to end the cycle of abuse

as much as i love kyoru as a ship cause it's well-written and they have development, one thing i do hate is their first kiss. would you consider it ooc for kyo to do what he did? that is, takaya playing into the trope of "a character being desperate to kiss the person they want because if they don't, they'll lose the chance"? i know takaya has spoken on the matter but eh idk who to blame here.
also, may i say that people who say tohru should have ended with yuki are in the wrong? i love their relationship but it has always been platonic, and even in shimazaki's voice you can hear him performing the "prince" role!
i love this ancient discourse lol and you pose a really good question....*is* it ooc for kyo to do this? tbh i don't really think so, but not for the reason you stated. one big thing that really frustrates me about kyo as a character is that i think he's kind of a coward. he has a really awful habit of avoidance, running away, pushing people away when they're trying to help or reconcile with him, etc, so the fact that he kisses tohru when she's not even conscious actually fits in with this pattern of behavior. it's just pure avoidance at the cost of others (here, tohru, and really very often it's tohru). conversely, kyo is also very impulsive, so i think maybe at the surface of his mind it was a "if i don't kiss her now i'll never get to" kind of thing, but at the end of the day i think it is rooted in his avoidance; if he had asked to kiss her, there's a chance she would say no, triggering his self-hatred—or, possibly even worse for him, she might say yes, which would imbue him with agency that he's demonstrably uncomfortable with having. it's a moment i really hate and i desperately wish their first kiss didn't play out that way, but at the same time i don't think it's out of character. i do have a problem with its framing though, it's really really not romantic at all, it's sexual assault and it's also kyo indulging his worst tendencies. i didn't know that takaya had commented on it, i'm curious what she said!
also yeahhhhh takaya planned for their relationship to be platonic from the very start, in fact she's said in interviews that the series was inspired by the scene of yuki and tohru on the beach in the beach house arc! it's veryyyy clearly platonic and one of my favorite relationships in fb <3
hey how come in the anime when akito attacks ren and hatori stops her, he has a syringe in his hand so he can medically sedate akito, but in the manga that syringe is not present?????
fruits basket fandom put so much energy into arguing that being a member of the sohma family doesn't mean they're related closely enough to be considered incest, so shipping them together is kosher. and while that may be true the reality of the situation is that all these people were raised together under the same roof and family culture and they all knew each other from birth and for all intents and purposes had sibling relationships to each other. i mean specifically bw kureno, shigure, and akito, with an extension of hatori and ayame if you wanna read it like that, like....yeah all those people are siblings. they're also all fucking each other.
This is so rude
Hey, hey, breathe... Look at me.... This is all your fault, okay?
This panel is so fucking crazy. Fruits basket loves to gesture bigly towards incest
We're both giving shag realness
reading the part of fruits basket where katsuya repeatedly pulls an abused eighth grader out of school and at once point brags that he can get away with stuff that would land other people in hot water bc he dad used to work at this school.
Yeahhh one of my fav pages
man what i really love about this page is that it isn't ayame who is front and center in this panel for yuki. it's SHIGURE. shigure's looking right at him and ayame is to the side, looking at him over his shoulder. yuki mentions in this chapter that he often saw shigure taking care of akito, and then he's featured later asking yuki if he'd like to come live in his house. there's such an interesting thread here between yuki and shigure, the pseudo-brother neither yuki nor shigure wanted but ended up acquiring out of mutual necessity. shigure becomes a refuge for yuki (and i think that yuki is somewhat refreshing to shigure as well), even though in so many ways he represents the status-quo, because shigure is observant—i think the only reason ayame is even looking at yuki here is because shigure looked at him first.
yuki spends all of fruits basket being disgusted at even the mere mention of sex or sexuality, even going so far as to shame kyo for truly gentle moments of sexual tension in the latter half of the manga, and you're telling me he just waltzes into a relationship with machi the moment the curse ends? noooo sir he hasn't faced that AT ALL
you've heard of "he would not fucking say that" now get ready for "he would not be that comfortable with his own sexuality"
tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"
