The amount of disappearances that had occurred in such a limited time-span, in a single town, was unprecedented. More baffling still was the lack of answers, and seemingly nonexistent investigation of their police force at the time. Now, almost three decades later, that same pattern was beginning to form in Derry, Maine and this time it wouldn’t go unnoticed. Special Agent Klein had been assigned to investigate the uncanny phenomenon, which was odd in itself. With his partner currently testifying in an unrelated trial, he was alone and without even police backup. For now, he supposed, it would have to do simply to collect information and see exactly what they were dealing with.
The day wore on, and the few leads he had pursued had all been quite different except in their unhelpfulness. He was met with everything from hostility to confusion, but it all ended with a door in his face and no new information. Finally, he came to a promising individual: Bill Denbrough, who had apparently just come to town only weeks prior. Knocking at the door of the townhouse he now occupied, August waited until the door opened to flash his badge.
“Mr. Denbrough. I’m Special Agent Klein, here investigating the recent disappearances, and I was wondering if you’d be willing to answer a few questions for me?” He was surprised to be met with a pair of bright blue eyes that were more or less level with his own, an observation that held very little pertinence to the case.
