The Movie Dear White People discusses many topics such as gays, powers of position because of parents, black revolutionist, indirect segregation in dorms, interracial couples, and white appropriation. I feel like it hit a soft spot with every single one of these topics such as how dorms might be randomized but somehow whites always end up in rooms with white and blacks always end up in rooms with blacks. It also talk about how some people get better positions in life because of their parents in government, law enforcement and popularity. It showed how unaccepted interracial relationships are, but people are beginning to be open to it. It showed how gays can walk around campus so alone trying to find themselves and how people distance themselves from them. Black revolutionist step up in this movie and show how than can fight for what they want. Lastly, the topic that stuck out the most was white appropriation. It showed how whites will do anything to be black and can get away with it. They would even try and have an black Halloween party just because they “want to be black for a night”.

This movie was very good in my eyes. For one who would have enough balls to put something out like this knowing it can be back lashed by white America. It went against the status quo. It touched on all the weak spots in stereotypes and unleashed the truth to them. It taught me that blacks and white cannot co-exist if they do not respect one another in their own culture. If you haven’t seen this movie yet I highly recommend it.

Blogging

With me not ever doing blogging, in my life this was a great experience. The first few made me look at videos different. The made me look at the colors, scenery, sounds, and lyrics. It made me view Michael Jackson videos in a way where I can enjoy it more than I probably would have watching it how I use too. The next 2 blog post made me think outside of the box, and how music can change a person for good reasons or bad. With Biggie and Tupac, I saw how even though you may rap about a life your were one in, but if you move out of that environment you begin to get looked at differently. It also showed me that people change in front of a camera. The media and your labels make you how they want you to be. The Jay-Z blog made me realize that you can do much more than people allow you to with rap. It is still art and can be represented in all forms. In the Nicki Minaj blog it made me see how race can affect the way people look at you. As black, if we do the same thing other races do, we get penalized, while others get praised. Last but not least I my pitch blog made me realize that as a black young lady I should worry about how my image is being put out there. I feel like blogging increased my thinking, writing, and knowledge. It help me discover what I really like beyond a shallow closed mind.

Research Blog Post: Stereotypes in Film

Tyler Perry is one of the only black directors who have a place in Hollywood. Most of his movies tell the story of families in urban communities. The movies depict the struggles that they go through and give insight to what many people deal with on an everyday basis. Even though many of his movies have been “telling Stories”, they have also been pulling our community down. Tyler Perry’s movies have embodied most of the stereotypes that we thought blacks buried a long time ago. One of his biggest stereotyped characters is Madea, the gun slanging, hard knock, southern grammar grandmother. She is overweight, good hearted and loud and wears a night gown. His Madea character reflects the historical stereotype of a “mammy” figure. According to the Urban Dictionary,” The mammy is an archetype, portraying a domestic servant of African descent who is generally good-natured, often overweight, and loud. The stereotypical mammy is portrayed as obsequiously servile or acting in, or protective of, the interests of whites” (Urban Dictionary, 2009). In the past this figure was one who took care of kids (some of Perry’s Movies, Madea has taken in kids), usually white, and was looked at as a maid or house keeper. Think about other movie characters that have had the mammy traits such as Big Momma House and the Help. This is just one of the many stereotypes we are still trying to live down.

In Dr. Sexton’s passage, she’s arguing that no matter how women portray their body, they will be judged. If women outside of the white race exploit their bodies in a sexual they will be look upon as sluts, sellouts or even UN lady likely. If they put it out themselves they will be looked at like women who have failed to lady the way for our young women. If they are victims of people’s exposure they will be looked at as vulnerable with remarks such as “you shouldn’t have seen them anyway”. No matter what role the woman plays they will be put on the front line and looked upon as less of a woman. With the double standard, if men were to put up a picture of a naked female he will be idolized by other men. If a woman is not appealing to the man they are looked at as lame or “basic”. They will be frowned upon if they are not given a man something to want, touch, and look at, but will Also be frowned upon if they were to put themselves on display. If it is out of the control of the man or white supremacy, the world begins to go into shutdown.

In Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” video, the many focus is “booties” everywhere, but the bigger picture is more meaningful. Once the audience gets past the butts all over there screens, they will realize all the things that happens. In her kitchen scene, she does all the things that would normally turn men on, but she makes them only what you can imagine. She sprays whip crème on herself but not a sexy as someone would expect. She sprays it everywhere and makes it very messy. She acts like she is going to put a banana in her mouth but, before it gets there, the scene switches to her cutting the banana into pieces. As Nicki is about to do something else sexy she just makes a mean mug face and it never happens. So is she really being as exposing as everyone think she is? As the next scene occurs, and she gives rapper friend Drake a lap dance, he sits there in shock like every other man. As soon as he tries to smack her butt she smacks his hand and walks away. This shows how even though she’s flaunting its, he can’t have it, sort of “look but don’t touch attitude”. Even while that going on her voice over is saying f**k the people who hate her body because she does what she wants with it. In the end she makes a bad ass video with a bad ass message. Nicki Minaj Is in control whether the people want to believe it or not.

Hobson's Argument

Hobson’s argument is stating that Jay-Z who is a rapper is now considered a performing artist in the modern out world. Even though people feel like he has sold out he talks about the struggles and what people do to the black body. She talks about how he words somewhat differ from his performance in the video. Most of his audience in the video is white people/artist who don’t even understand what he is talking about. He even talks about how he doesn’t spend his money on old expensive art, but paid someone to create a graffiti wall for his daughter. Most performance before hi at the museum haven’t been rapper, and many wont perform rap after him there, but He is Jay-Z andhe can do that. He relates art in his lyrics to the things in his life like him sleeping next to the present day mona lisa with better feature. He is translating how to you can be a performing artist without being the status quo.

Biggie VS Tupac: Vibe Cover

                               Compare these two covers from Vibe magazine. How does the cover on the left construct Tupac? What about Biggie in his cover? How do they differ? Provide details of mise en scene and framing to support your analysis.

  These 2 covers have different meaning. On the Tupac cover, he has a serious face, glasses, and the words hold powerful meaning. He isn’t trying to be flashy, he just wants people to have” the real story”. the words and colors on this cover are very dull with the brown, white and black colors. On the other hand Biggie’s cover looks fun and flashy. He has on a lot of jewelry, him and his wife are in the back seat of the car, and the words are going in the same direction as them.  With the vibe being in yellow and the introduction being in purple, all the words pop out. The introduction is also less serious than Tupac’s. On Tupac’s cover the word “vibe” is in front of him, but on Biggie’s the word is behind him. The tells that Tupac’s article is more important, while Biggie’s is all about hyping Biggie up.

Beat It: Opening your Eye’s to the Opening Scene

    In Michael Jackson’s Beat it video, the open scene hooks your mind, grabs your attention and makes you want to watch the rest of it. The mood stays neutral, but with the thuggish costumes and demeanor of the first actors leaving the diner, you know trouble lies ahead. Then the frame switches to a dark alley way, and the cowboy shot shows a row of young adults coming to view on a parallel angle. As they snap and run off synchronized, the music begin to play, dogs begin to howl, and this set the mood of a bad atmosphere. As the scene changes to a man crawling out of a sewer, it  indirectly depicts “growing up in the Gutter”. Beat It’s tone start off intimidating. Its shows a city filled with thugs because of there costumes, and the facial expressions show anger, misery, and struggle. All the lights in most scenes are dark or dull to give off the night vibe. The camera angles are either long shot or medium close ups because most of the scenes involve more than one person. The camera angles are still and are far enough to get everyone in them and the background to show the location and surrounding. Most of the paces are medium but speed up because the people are running/walking off. The pace gives off a mysterious vibe and makes you question everything that is going on throught out the city. You begin to ask questions like: Where are they going? What about to happen? Beat It’s cinematography and mise en scene hooks you and captures your senses from the beginning scene and pushes you towards the rest of the video.
