testing out the new tiles and stuff in the game, seeing how it looks. just threw in the beach level enemies for testing purposes. I think I’m ok with everything, I’m gonna start working on the enemies and hazards and stuff for this area.

updated the tileset a bit more to contrast with the dark foreground assets I’m working on tonight. Just need to finish this and I’ll start working on all the enemies and stuff.
Here’s a more zoomed in version because it’s kind of hard to see everything with how small the video is on tumblr
Testing it out in the game. Love me some parallax. I wanted to see what it would look like once you go above the trees.
Now I just need to make a boatload of foreground assets because it looks super bare and possibly change the colors of the ground tiles.
More progress on the forest background. I’ll upload a video of how it looks in game.
More progress on the forest background
still pixeling this background. trying to see how much detail I can fit in with the 2 colors. I’m liking how it’s turning out.
yeah so one time i doodled a pirate ship and ever since i wanted to make a boss that had a pirate theme so here it is. Gotta adjust the colors I think.
I think I will start working on the actual boss fight next week once I’m done with the forest area. I want to incorporate a pirate ship into the fight, shooting cannonballs at you or something.
Sketched in the rest of the background real quick so I could test it out in the game before I start finalizing the pixel art. Looks pretty good, so I’ll see if I can finish all that now. I want to add more colors into the background though, maybe like glowy things like eyes in the bushes or something, idk.
Progress on the background. I think I can have it in-game by tomorrow or Saturday. There is still a lot of detail I want to add in the closer trees but the basic light forms are there. And those are all the colors I’m going to use so just a matter of carving in more detail.
I’ve been obsessed with bonsai trees lately so that’s basically the inspiration for most of the trees in here.
I remade the tileset for the forest area. Bothered me for a long time. I also changed the colors a bit to make it a bit bluer. I’ll see if I like it, but I might change it back because the old colors had a more jungley vibe.
I’m also going to change all those background trees because they don’t feel jungley or alien enough. So I did a sketch of sort of the feel I want.
Hello! I'm looking into game maker but I'm finding its in-program animation system and sprite editor more difficult to use than I think it should be. Would you recommend doing the bulk of sprite work in another program and importing the animations somehow?
Oh yes definitely. That sprite editor/animator is more or less used for small tweaks or something. Id recommend you use Aseprite for animation/sprite creation. Personally I use photoshop to make my sprites and then aseprite to animate them, but Aseprite is pretty good for making sprites as well.
Im a aspiring game developer, one question. Is this work heavy on math?
For a game like mine, not really. Basic algebra, some geometry and a little trigonometry is pretty much all I’ve used on this game so far. I don’t think I’ve used any calculus at all.
As this is my first project, I can’t say how it is for other types of games, but for a basic 2D platformer, you don’t need that much math.
And to add, there’s just so many tutorials and resources these days that somebody who is just really terrible with math can make a game like this.
What software are you using to create this game and draw the pixelart?
I am using Game Maker Studio as the engine, Photoshop for pixel art, and Aseprite for animation.
Hey, is this project still active? I really like how its turning out so far.
Yes! Im working on a new zone, so progress will be posted soon!
Got the mana system implemented. Still got some balancing to do with that. I’m also thinking I need to make the leaf weapons a bit more unique, doesn’t seem like there’s any incentive to use one over the other, but that might be an issue with the enemies and how they have to be fought.
Added a ninja star weapon. Could be used as a shield or a projectile. Gotta add sound effects and what not, also starting to implement the new UI.
