Me at people on Twitter freaking out over Grindeldore having sex:
Fascinating how people conveniently forget the genre and overall tone of the hp world in order to shit on jkr. Dumbledore wearing a rainbow pride pin, talking about his ex boyfriend gellert and telling Harry and the minister of magic about the hot sex they had would be very, very unfitting. But a blood pact and that scene in the context of this world is basically marriage, maybe even more. Acknowledging that would require thinking though, sth they don't do very often I guess.
Yep. At this point anyone who is still complaining that Dumbledore’s sexuality is still isn’t clear on screen is clearly perusing an agenda. It’s there. It’s in the movies. If they were a het couple, no one would be having these issues.
They want it to look like fanfic, where characters do give speeches about their sexuality and wear T-shirts saying “I can’t even see straight” and say boyfriend and husband etc etc. But we’re talking about a fandom that can’t hold a world without cell phones in their imagination, expecting them to take the world as it it is within it’s setting is asking too much.
I’m kind of in the middle. I don’t want a sex scene or even a kiss, but I do want Dumbledore to say “I was in love with him”. Just those five words. And then literally no-one would be able to deny it.
I genuinely believe this will happen. A verbal confirmation, but in later films (like 4 or 5). I don’t expect any kind of on-screen confirmation to happen right now because it’s too early in the story to do that. We are only 2 movies into a 5-part story and CoG is just the beginning to Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s arc. Any explicit confirmation from Dumbledore earlier than the final two films is simply bad storytelling and horrible characterisation of someone as secretive as Dumbledore.
jkr saying dumbledore and grindelwald’s relationship is intensely sexual is perfect proof that straight people/yaoi fangirls are constantly making gays look bad
JK Rowling didn’t say the relationship was intensely sexual. You’re omitting a ton of words. It goes like this:
“Their relationship was incredibly intense, it was passionate, and it was a love relationship. But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know. You can believe you know. So I’m less interested in the sexual side - though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship- than I am in the emotions they felt for each other.”
Let’s do an example. If I said, “I hate Holocaust deniers because so many Jewish people died and it was an atrocity.” Then you all come along and snip it to: “I hate Jewish people.” Omg, I’m outraged!!!! There is goood reason why, in academic writing, you need to include “…” or “[…]” when snipping someone’s quote. It tells the reader you’re leaving shit out that may be important.
i apologize for taking the quote out of context but jk rowling simply saying there was a sexual dimension to the relationship was the mistake
sure, she didn’t say specifically it was “intensely sexual” but saying “they had an intense and passionate romantic relationship and there was a sexual dimension to that relationship” is just flat out unnecessary information. especially to the target audience for her books
People initially jumped down her throat because she wasn’t being explicit enough, because she and Yates “didn’t have the courage to confirm it,” and now that she confirms they were lovers, she is told “too much information.”
I don’t see it being as unnecessary at all, because it confirms that they truly were lovers rather than best friends or “close as brothers.” We had always known that Dumbledore had feelings for him, but it was pictured that it was one-sided, that only Dumbledore had romantic feelings, but the fact they were full-blown lovers changes their dynamic entirely. It takes it from one person secretly pining for the other boy who might have been heterosexual for all we know to they both felt for each other. Dumbledore didn’t just sit on his feelings all summer, not acting - his feelings were reciprocated on some level.
This information confirms that they were intimate in every possible way - not just mentally and emotionally, but physically as well.
And I know that people might balk at this information and be like, “OK, I didn’t really need to know that,” but there’s nothing shameful in having sex with someone you love. You can love someone just as much even if you never are physically intimate with them, but, IMHO anyway, it is an act of complete trust if you’re doing it with someone you love.
Now, if JK Rowling said, “Hey everyone, Dumbledore enjoyed having one-night stands with random men in London,” THAT would be in poor taste. But to say that he had a romantic relationship with Grindelwald that included sex is just confirming that they romantically loved and completely trusted one another. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
However, I do get a bit of what you’re saying. JK Rowling never said, “Newt and Tina are going to have a romantic relationship that includes sex.” But that’s because society is prejudiced. Society doesn’t have a problem seeing that Newt and Tina love each other, but it does have a hard time seeing, despite anvil-sized hints being dropped on their heads, that Dumbledore and Grindelwald loved each other in the same way. The blood pact scene, taking place within the Mirror of DESIRE, plus the fact that Gellert is still going around with the blood pact pendant near his heart, is not enough for your casual movie-goer to see that there was something romantic between them, and that is entirely a result of a prejudiced society.
Whether we like it or not, many general movie-goers do need to be explicitly told, “THEY WERE LOVERS.” And that’s very unfortunate, and I don’t like it, but that’s the world we live in right now, and JK Rowling is stating what is not obvious to prejudiced people. She didn’t go into graphic details - she just told us that yes, their love relationship did include physical intimacy. And yet still people are outraged, just like they were outraged by her not confirming it outright.
Are we going to see it in the actual movies? We’ll see them kiss, I have 0 doubt in my mind, but people are being so impatient and indignant they aren’t giving her and the producers are chance.
Basically people harassed her because she didn’t make it sexually explicit enough in the movies despite the fact that there are THREE movies left, then she got harassed for confirming the sexual aspect of their relationship. I guess she can’t win either way 🤷♀️
Did I do it right?

After Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was released in China, Grindelwald became very popular amongst Chinese fans. J.K. Rowling did not include much about Grindelwald in the Harry Potter series, so how did you create this character?
First, I had to get the foundation right. Jo gave me many suggestions, and other than that, the most important part was just the screenplay. I made many notes on the script, and through reading the script multiple times, I slowly added flavour to the character. I didn’t want him to be a character that people could just take one look at him and understand him. He’s a master of manipulation who wants to convince people to join his side, and on the other hand, he does have softer, kinder parts to his personality. My take on him was that any internal conflict you had in yourself becomes very dangerous when dealing with Grindelwald. I think he has a double personality: one side of him is his original self, and the other is the side that tries to oppress - one clear, one mysterious. That’s also the reason why I chose to have different coloured eyes, to show the two sides to his personality.
The relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore is something that many of the fans pay particular attention to. Did the events that happened in their past have any influence on the way you created Grindelwald’s character? And did you film the “Mirror of Erised” scene together with Jude Law?
No, when I got to set, Jude Law’s parts had already been shot. Jo has really written an amazing story, and she really showed how Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s love and at the same time, hate, for each other was built up. I think the two of them are a sort of surprising pairing. To each other, they are the best person in the world. I believe that there once was a passionate love between them, and this love was born because they both saw a reflection of themself in the other person. But for Grindelwald, his love came with an envy. He had always thought of himself as the greatest dark wizard, but in his heart, he clearly knows that Dumbledore has the same level of power that he does, and that Dumbledore will become even stronger. His conceitedness is eventually the reason why they went on different paths.
From then on, Grindelwald harboured a grudge in his heart. But do you know what this grudge represents? There’s a side to his grudge that no one gets to know of - it’s wounds, it’s pain, and it’s this hatred that he has, having this, in a way, forbidden, love, yet having nowhere to vent his frustration. I understood Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s relationship from this point of view, and from some lines in the film, you can feel this paradoxical opposition between them, where they oppose each other like fire and water do, but yet are bound to each other. Grindelwald’s decision in the end was to continue on his path that led him to become the Grindelwald we know now. These are things that you can’t see on the surface of the story, because they’re all hidden within the tiny details. I think Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s past is filled with pain, so I also really want to know what exactly happened between them.
As we see in the movie, Dumbledore says that he cannot move against Grindelwald because they made a blood pact. If the blood pact did not exist, would Dumbledore be able to move against him?
I believe even without the blood pact, Dumbledore would still be extremely hesitant whether he is able to move against Grindelwald. This is also Grindelwald’s internal conflict, because he isn’t sure if Dumbledore will one day return to his side. But I’m guessing he’s also somewhat anticipating the day when the two of them finally meet to fight, because Grindelwald needs this battle to happen in order to achieve his final goal. His hatred, envy and bitterness will all be let loose in that one battle. Grindelwald is very confident no one in the wizarding world can be a worthy opponent to him, because his name is his faith. But in the end, it will be this exact arrogance that will lead to his downfall.
“To each other, they are the best person in the world” - Oh, I like this sentence so much. It’s so short and simple yet so disarmingly sweet :D
