Tattoos, udon, and a renegade. Iād say I was right, but really, everyone already knew that.
No hate, ever.
Hey, CT, itās been a while.
Iāll tell you my frustration when it comes to the folks on this board: I canāt show you what we want to do (and are doing) to answer many of your concerns. Yet.
Even when players get royally pissed off, I know itās because you care. Sometimes, we human being type bods say something we shouldnāt when we get annoyed, frustrated or downright angry. That never comes from a place of apathy.
Of course, there are times when I get a bit sore when some folks go way over the top. Not usually about myself (Iām ugly enough to be comfortable in my skin), but Iām pretty protective of the Narrative discipline, so when some of the finest people Iāve ever known are accused of being various things, it does get to me a bit, I wonāt lie. However, I know where those mistakes come from: a love of LoL from you, and a lack of visibility from us.
There is only so much visibility we can provide while still maintaining our ability to do what we do and, which is completely their choice, some people just prefer to be a bit more private.
We can still do better though, and I know we, and I, have been trying to do so. In the spirit of visibility, I was having a chat with someone who frequents these boards via DMs a while back (before my recent absence from here), about a variety of things that he was most gracious in keeping private. One of those things was a fun creative exercise I wanted to do with everyone on the boards (but havenāt been able to, Iāll do so tomorrow. Oh bugger, I just saw the time. Ok, later today).
Another topic that he called me on was the lack of understanding about leadership on Narrative, and Iāve seen some folks say there isnāt any leadership, which is, of course, incorrect. The gentleman in question also said that thereās a certain history (that I wasnāt completely aware of, to be honest) on these and the previous boards of having a name to attach certain things to about how things are developing on Narrative and lore.
As Iāve said before, Narrative doesnāt do story alone, it helps make stories and characters for teams, so we donāt ever decide things in a vacuum.
However, the person in DMs, an absolutely passionate player, said I should clearly state that Iām the Narrative Lead on League of Legends, mainly because it would help with transparency for the long-attending members of the boards. So, I just did.
With that out of the way (I didnāt say it specifically before that conversation because I didnāt really think it was important), and with clarity of where Iām coming from, let me state categorically that every single member of the Narrative discipline works tirelessly to create awesome things for the players. We succeed or fail together, but it is always because we want you to continue to love this game and this world in the way that we do. In the way that your appreciation, your passion, and yes, even your anger sometimes, drives us further onward to do better. That never comes from a place of hate.

Kennenās eyes widened as she sunk into the shadows, this was something he had only seen her do on a few occasions. It was something that was only done at the direst of times on missions, something Shen looks sternly upon as he looks around seeās the flurry of attacks, if there was one thing he was praised on and took pride in; it was his speed.
He dodged each blow, using rather obscure and not regularly taught methods of dodging as he streaked around her blows, turning into the very form of lightning as he streaked through the air dodging her blows, he sighed his breath growth tired as he felt his ankle grabbed, he let out a loud yelp as heās tossed to the ground his face planted into the snow he let out a soft cough as he turned around to lay his back in the snow to see Akali standing over him, a Kama pointed right at his face, his eyes widened further, the calm yet understanding woman he looked up to meant business, she was not his sister at this time, but his teacher. He looked around trying to think of what he could do; something to distract her? He would then clutch a handful of snow in his cupped hands and in his arm as he swept it upwards towards her eyes, only hoping heād hit his mark.
ioniastwilight
Snow in her face was hardly something Akali had been thrilled to receive but it was a point for the little rodent when all was said and done. Environmental weapons and improvisation were incredibly important in the field despite how so many looked down upon them.
But a point here or there was hardly enough to win her over tonight. When he had landed his assault she once more melted into a pool of inky blackness around him. Every inch of the forest was now his enemy; every shadow, every nook, and every cranny. Where the light did not touch, she could. And even with the full moon in the sky the shadows were growing long all around him. An eerie silence filled the air though movement was detectable. Yordle hearing was the only advantage he carried now; being able to hear the snakeskin sliding across the snow gave him some direction to face and be prepared from. If he could hear her motions over his own breathing, that is.
She waited, patiently, watching. His guard had to drop. It always did. And once it did, Akali struck. A handful of snow returned to its rightful owner, shoved down the back of his top. Cold, and a rather swift lesson in distraction. If he managed to avoid the strike she would have been impressed. If he did not, she fully expected to see him hopping about cursing.
ionian-storm
The cold sensation of the snow was felt immediately as it was stuck into his hood, the young teen yelped as he hopped up and swung the hood off his head, as he looked around, āTHAT WAS COLD!ā he whined, as he noticed Akali sunk back into the shadows, his nose twitched, usually the night was never a bother for him, Yordle eyes could pick out light easily thus making his night vision better then averageā¦but Akaliās abilities those that could rival maybe even Zedās made this task hard for him, he would let his ears pick up the sounds around him, as he took a deep breath.
He would then stand stoic breathing in moderation as he motioned several hand mantraās in quick precision and lets out a shrill scream stomping his foot on the ground, a strike of Thunder and lightning was seen as all the snow gathered on the treeās fell as he darted his eyes around to see Akaliās slender form revealed by the snow as he dug his boot into the ground darting towards her at the speeds only three others could ever pick up on, he would then feint to distract Akali into thinking heād jump for her, but instead slid on the ground planting his hands on the ground and pushing against it, twisting his arms making him launch at Akali like a corkscrew, his unorthodox method of hand to hand combat had always been something Shen and Akali hadā¦questioned, but he self taught himself through his methods of rhythm and speed. Hopefully his kick would connect to her face, but Akali wasnāt a pushover, she could easily catch himā¦the punishment thenā¦could be dire.
ioniastwilight
Face, no. She had been trying to wean Kennen from this rather frivolous and ineffective combat style for many a year so she was somewhat ready for him to throw her a curve ball. But when he launched himself, Akali had not quite estimated his direction and angle of attack. She leapt upwards to try to avoid the sliding tackle but caught the full force of his volt surge to the chest. With a cry of mixed pain and surprise she bowled over backwards and back into the snow. Now it was her turn to be on the defensive.
Eyes and mind reeling from the blow it took her a few moments to gather herself enough to blink the stars from her eyes. Breaths came short for the assassin. Narrowing eyes warned Kennen that he had truly poked the bear, but there was a glimmer of pride in those jade orbs as well. He had done well. Better than anticipated at that. Once more she rose and settled into a fighting stance, still unsteady from the attack. Waiting patiently for his next flurry, his next assault. She knew that it was coming, she simply needed to be patient.
Sometimes his own impatience was his undoing; it made him predictable. At least to a degree.

Lore of Legends
Keep reading
Coming from someone else who has honestlyĀ āPut a lot of work into their blog.ā I have to disagree. Yes, this community is very toxic and people are assholes, but the little lore that allows this community to the things we do now is unacceptable from Riot. Sure, Riot wants to focus more on the e-sports and overall feel of the game, but thatās no excuse to kill off another section. The toxicity of this RP community will not be itās downfall. There will always be another teen who wants to give RPing a shot. It will be Riot choking out itās lore until itās just about the e-sports. Communities can go on with assholes in it. They canāt go on without proper content.Ā
I am not normally one to put my opinion into something, but we should not justĀ āGet the fuck over it.ā Riot needs to understand that this is a community, and that some of us like the game not just for E-sports. Some of us like it for the characters and lore.Ā
[[Where do you get the idea that thereās noĀ āproper contentā floating around? Did you miss the point I tried to drive home about the extent and vast array of lore weāre now getting? Trundle, before and after the fact. Look at what he was versus where he is now.
Azirās lore. Braumās lore. Even Gnar has lore upon lore that drives deep into the history of Valoran and expands on several characters while dredging up very interesting questions.
Riot is not killing the lore. They are simply moving the lore to a place where those of us who care about it can see it and those who donāt donāt have to see it. The lore across the champions since the League was officially disbanded is better, deeper, more interesting and infinitely more engaging than anything they had done before.]]
This community will never even agree what to do with regards to new lore (some still do regular old lore, some do new lore, some do some weird mix). It's been nearly a year since the official announcement that there would no longer be an Institute in the canon lore and half the community is still grasping at straws instead of adapting to that. I think it's pretty hopeless, heh.
[[Unfortunately youāre probably right. And thatās fine, whatever, people are free to do what they want I guess. Iām still hoping that enough bricks to the head will change things. Maybe.]]

Lore of Legends
The bitching has officially pushed me to point break so Iām taking time to write this to shut everyone up. The lore hasnāt gone by the wayside like so many of you want to believe. Iām not going to point fingers but one person in specific is driving me up the fucking wall with this shit. So letās take a trip down memory lane, shall we?
POP QUIZ! Who was the last champion released to have the League of Legends explicitly mentioned in their in-game lore?
If you guessed Varus, you are correct. Draven would also be an acceptable answer though his lore does not explicitly name the Leage of Legends. At all.Ā āA larger stage,ā is as close as youāre going to get.
06/06/2012, almost three years ago, was the last canon mention of the League (going off Dravenās lore here) within the game itself. Of course Iām not taking into account any Riot posts on the forums or on Reddit because I am specifically pointing out that Riot has notĀ āgiven up on the loreā.
That means that there have been 25 champions released since the League has stopped being a thing.
āWell Akali, all of their lore must suck!ā
The champions include, but are not limited to: Thresh, Lucian, Yasuo, Bard, Kalista, Azir, Vi, Zed and Elise. Maybe Iām just a sucker for some of these champions (yes I like ladies with legs and pneumatic fists shut up) but letās take a look at two champions in particular from this list of 25.
Azir and Braum. Arguably two of the best-written, most interesting, and biggest lore-building endeavours thus-far taken by Riot in their ongoing quest to appease what is the loudest minority in gaming that I have ever seen.
Azirās lore in game is short and sweet. It is literally three lines of text. Three sentences. My introduction to this post is longer. So what has Azirās lore achieved? It has completely rewritten the Shurima, given Fiddlesticks a life after the League, detailed the rise and fall of an empire that spanned centuries, given a vast amount of depth to a place that previously had none, explained Renekton and Nasusā existence, gave us a segue into RekāSai, and redesigned and breathed life into a once-dead AD carry. And a featured game mode but we donāt talk about that around ask-sivir because she rages too hard.
All without the League. All without needing a long and drawn-out in-game back story. Three lines. Three. Lines. Go look, Iāll wait.
As for Braum, what did we get from that? Howling Abyss, more information about the Freljord, a cohesive Freljord that didnāt suck, and arguably one of the funnest characters in the game from a writing perspective. It boggles my mind why more RPers donāt pick him up because he is hilarious.
His in-game lore is a story, told from a grandmother to a daughter, extolling Braumās fantastic feats of strength and mind. His lore tells us almost nothing about him! Heās a good guy who uses a door and apparently can punch through a god damned mountain. It gives us nothing about his motivation or his purpose.
The lore that Riot released after the fact fleshed him out but they still gave us so much wiggle room to do our own thing that I personally think heās about as perfect a character as you can get.
Ekko falls into the same boat. The only person here that I have honestly seen take him well and properly is deathrocket. There is a very real chance that Ekkoās lore could invalidate a vast amount of her work and world building and the only thing she has said on the topic isĀ āthatāll suck, guess Iāll have to work on it.ā Thatās it. No panic, no complaining, no fluster or bluster. Sheās just rolling with the punches and calling it good. Which is absolutely incredible considering the effort that has gone into that Jinx.
What Iām trying to say is, in no uncertain terms, get the fuck over it. Things change. Riot is no longer writing lore into the game but they will come after the fact. The constant bitching, moaning, whining and complaining is achieving one thing and one thing only:
You are driving away those in this community who have done incredible work to get their characters going. Off the top of my head I can name two of the best blogs on this site who have packed up and carted off because they grew sick and tired of the constant bitching, bickering, petty name-calling and under the breath talking. And I know for a fact that at least two, if not three, more are considering the same course of action.
Iām not threatening, Iām flat-out promising that this community will kill itself off if it doesnāt adapt.
Listen up, assholes.
I see like 15 people bitching about the short lore (again) on my dash.
How many times does Riot have to say that these lore entries are for the client and that the longer lores will eventually be coded into the site?
At this point, you people are complaining just to complain. You also donāt seem to realize that you people can build on your character more and make them actually YOURS without a longer lore pigeonholing you.
Yaāll will sit here and tell me all dayĀ āoh your portrayal of Sivir is great! Shurima seems so real when you write it!ā
I wrote this entire character with only IronStylus sayingĀ āyeah when we rework her sheās gonna be shuriman and sheāll be like a Battle Jasmine.ā
Before the shurima event, all shurima was was fucking sand.
Learn to stop being a bunch of complainers and fucking WRITE. Donāt wait on a company who runs a video game to give you everything. Riot has a million other things to do, and itās always been our job to fill in the missing pieces. Fill in the canvas like I am, or quit your bitching because no one wants to see it.
It was the dead of the night, the sting of cold filled the air of Ionia as Kennen scanned the area, it was winter and he was usually asleep at this time as he wandered the woods, why was she having him meet her there? She said that this was an important test, what kind of test? His training hasā¦
Once his eyes had graced her form, she melted. Back into the shadows all around him, displaying techniques and tactics long-since forgotten by the Kinkou. Perhaps they had not been forgotten; forbidden.
The next round of motions were entirely dependent on how fast Kennen could act and react. A blur of kicks and punches streaked towards him, assaulting the poor Yordle from every angle at once. Out of the shadows she struck, seemingly everywhere and nowhere all at once. There was nothing that this could have been besides a training session - for if not, she was trying to kill him.
The flurry of blows was followed by an attempt to snag the Yordleās limb. If he was not fast enough, Akali would throw him airborne by his ankle and a spinning kick sent him skittering across the snow like a stone across a pond. If he was fast enough to avoid the attack, things would calm down considerably for a few moments. Enough for him to at least get his head back together and facing the right direction.

Storytelling 101
I recently picked Tera up again. Apparently thereās a new class and itās really fun and overpowered and some of my friends want me to play. Whatever. The taste I have in my mouth because of that game is sour at best, downright toxic at worst. Again, whatever. To play with friends, Iāll do it.
So I threw together the new class and went out for a test run. Theyāre kinda cool, giant-ass laser cannon strapped onto a hot Castanic, sure, Iāll bite. But what struck me the most about it is how out of place I felt. Not because I donāt know the game (let me tell you how much dumb shit Iāve done because I keep defaulting to the GW2 control scheme) but because Iām a Castanic in a skimpy little outfit running around with a giant laser cannon...
... that shoots cannonballs.
Thereās something painfully jarring about the design of the weapon Iām firing, the casings that itās apparently launching out the side, and the projectile Iām firing. As in, not a single piece of those three fit together in any way, shape, or form. I admit fully that Iām a firearms person so I understand why these things donāt go together but at the same time I have to sit here and contend with myself to wrap my head around the designs and why it ruins the class - and by extension, game - for me so much.
Iām a well-versed writer. Iāve been writing for most of my life, Iāve gone to school for it, and Iāve written creatively in three languages. But the thing Iām better versed in is writing very, very poorly. And before you get good, you have to suck. Dave Grohl actually summed it up very well and succinctly;
Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy and old fucking drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and theyāll suck, too. And then theyāll fucking start playing and theyāll have the best time theyāve ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden theyāll become Nirvana. Because thatās exactly what happened with Nirvana. Just a bunch of guys that had some shitty old instruments and they got together and started playing some noisy-ass shit, and they became the biggest band in the world.
Writing, in my very unprofessional opinion, is the same way. You need to suck. You need to make mistakes and throw stupid things around and make a fool of yourself before you get any semblance of where youāre going. And honestly you should do so in a place where people can critique you openly. Some of the critique youāre going to get is going to be awful. Some of it is going to be unerringly good. And some of it, somewhere in the middle, lay the people you should truly listen to.
Iām not condoning people bashing others and Iām not condoning blatant fanboyism. Both of those things will set a writer back exponentially in their development. And yes - being a fanboy and loving everything someone writes hurts them almost as much as harassing them. If not more.
To bring this all back around to where I was originally going before I went off on a tangent, here are some of the things that I personally have learned and picked up through years of sucking. I could write a comprehensive guide about how to write a story, but then anyone who follows it becomes formulaic. Writing a story isnāt about checking boxes; itās about distinctly avoiding them to the best of your ability. There are some times where this isnāt strictly true (as youāll see in a bit) but for the most part, doing your own thing is the most important part of writing. If itās second to anything, itās second to having fun.
1) Continuity. I cannot stress how important it is to have all of the pieces fitting together. I cannot stress how important it is to have all of the pieces fitting together nicely. And I cannot stress enough how important it is to make sure your entire puzzle is moving in the same direction.
This is what murdered me on Tera (yet again). The Gunner class is supposed to be some hyper-technologically advanced class working off some alien power source and then using it to build what appears to be Gauss or rail guns.
Firing a cannon ball.
... ejecting a spent casing.
I wonāt go into why these things donāt work in great detail, but to try to put it into laymanās perspective: a cannonball is fired from a muzzle-loading weapon with no cartridge. A cartridge is a full package that contains bullet, powder, casing, and firing cap. A Gauss or Rail gun is fired using magnetic forces and currently doesnāt exist in any form (that I am currently aware of. The power required to fire one is astronomical). The time gap between these weapons is several hundred years, so cramming them into one shell makes not a lick of sense from any perspective.
Throw it all together and youāve got a mess. Your puzzle may as well still be in the box and by the looks of it, three puzzles have been mixed together.
I understand where they were going with it, but from a lore standpoint, it doesnāt work. Everyone has theirĀ ālineā so to speak - the moment when all disbelief can no longer be suspended and everything comes crashing down. That was my point.
2) Characters. Having strong, engaging characters is very important. Strength has nothing to do with character traits either; itās entirely about investing your audience in what youāre saying.
Let me make something clear that a lot of artists will disagree with: it is far harder to engage an audience with the written form than it is with any other artistic medium. Looking at a picture or piece of artwork is a nigh-immediate form of consumption. It takes seconds to appreciate artwork (longer if youāre looking at absolutely incredible work) and you get the basics down.
As a writer, you need to convince your reader to read your work. You need to hook them and drag them in. And if you canāt do that, youāve fallen flat on your face far before youāve even gotten off the ground.
3) Story. Much like above, telling a good story is paramount to keeping your audience. I wonāt go into too much detail about how to write a story or even why itās important as everyone should have some grasp of it by this point. What I will indulge myself in is to point you towards possibly the best resource I have ever found when writing fantasy, especially in long form.
The Rivan Codex, by David Eddings, is an amazing little book. Within, he divulges every bit of planning, pre-planning, and lore for his novel series. With it, he adds cliff notes, funny anecdotes, and intrinsic detail about the inner workings of his mind.
And I cannot stress how incredible it is to see the process up close and personal. One of my favourite excerpts from it is actually detailing a very important list one of the few you - or any writer - should ever print out and tack to their wall.
Item one: Theology Item two: 'The Quest' Item three: 'The Magic Thingamajig' Item four: 'Our Hero' Item five: the resident Wizard Item six: heroine Item seven: a villain with diabolical connections Item eight: obligatory group of companions Item nine: group of ladies who are attached to the bully-boys from item eight Item ten: the kings, queens, emperors, courtiers, bureaucrats, et al.
Iām paraphrasing heavily here so donāt jump on my back about it; if you want to see the full list in all of its glory, I strongly recommend either downloading the ebook or picking up a physical copy. You will not be disappointed.
Unfortunately, most readings Iāve picked up lately have fallen flat on their face through one or many of these means. Sure, maybe Iām just a picky writer but at the same time I feel as though far too many people are starting to consider writing to be something quick and easy that anyone can knock out.
If you want to do something quicker and easier than writing, I strongly recommend you take up rocket science.
This obviously isnāt an end-all-be-all list. Itās not a step-by-step guide to becoming a better writer or role player, but these are things that you should keep in mind if you want to improve.
And in the interest of not making this essay longer than it is, weāll end on this note:
The most important rule of thumb I have learned through my years of writing is to heed Chekhovās Gun.
Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there.
Anton Chekhov
