IPC Visual Lab

The eight-week photography program is a total immersion experience designed to provide instruction and hands-on training in the art of digital photography. Students are encouraged to be creative, and think of each project as a concise statement of artistic,documentary, and journalistic intent.

Inside the COVID Unit: Battling the Coronavirus Pandemic in Miami

In April of 2020, The Miami Herald gained extraordinary access to the Intensive Care Unit at Jackson South, a small community hospital in Miami-Dade county. For six months, healthcare workers filmed inside this unit providing a rare look at the front lines of the battle against COVID-19.

Inside the Covid Unit follows two healthcare workers as they risk their lives to save coronavirus patients, while also struggling to keep each other and their families safe. Along the way, we meet Dianne Washington, whose husband is diagnosed with COVID-19, only weeks after she loses her son to the same virus. Meanwhile, protesters argue against wearing masks and declare this virus a hoax. Then, summer hits, cases surge, and these healthcare workers struggle with one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the nation.

This five-part documentary series spans April - October 2020. It is told through the lens of America’s changing landscape as states begin to open up, with no COVID-19 vaccine in sight.
