dooku character breakdown
in both canon and legends, i feel like dooku is kinda on a tug of war with characterization - on one end, taking jocasta nu's favorable talk about him painting him as a brilliant reformist at face value, and on the other "christopher lee played dracula too, what if we made count dooku like dracula but a sith??" and giving him elborate torture dungeons to boot
i do like dooku a lot, and while some pieces of media nail him as someone who got in too deep with somewhat noble intentions and has since been long lost to the dark side, too many paint him as TOO cartoonishly evil or TOO sympathetic
so i'll kinda break down what i think about dooku on that gradient, defining him as he's portrayed in the movies (cuz while TCW is usually the second best resource, hes super one dimensional there) primarily
the trap the Jedi fall into in AOTC “he’s not capable of assassinating anyone, it’s not in his character” , their good quality their faith in him exploited - and when mace next meets dooku, he's ordering the execution of the jedi and declaring war on the galaxy
So Dooku's whole thing is initially thinks that the republic is too far gone and needs to be reformed, remade, etc and that’s why he leaves the jedi (but to note, he had dark leanings and selfish tastes in him before hand) and how he's first lured by Palpatine (plus a taste of forbidden dark side knowledge to sweeten the pot). in that sense, in the very broadest and most surface level - sure, dooku is sympathetic. there are problems in the galaxy, and broadly need to be fixed.
but he finds out that Palpatine and the Sith are all behind the corruption and fall of the republic. and dooku, a jedi master is unlike maul before him or anakin after him is uniquely suited to know HOW BAD THE SITH ARE. its then obvious how to actually fix the Galaxy objectively: reveal to the Jedi Palpatine’s influence, stop him, and tell on all the corrupt officials and bust the corpos and let the Galaxy flourish without a Sith tumor in it for the first time in a thousand years. the sith are OBJECTIVELY responsible for the fall of the republic, and dooku is made aware of this and he knows full well what "sith lord" means.
But by that time, he’s been given the taste of the dark side he's always wanted to taste + told about a grand plan to become emperor of the Galaxy, to destroy the Jedi and make whatever he wants in its stead. very, very tempting. power and influence on a scale unachievable by one of the greatest jedi masters and richest nobles in the galaxy. those are nice, but jedi masters are forbidden from learning the dark side, and rich nobles still aren't emperors.
so he kills sifo dyas, he kills yaddle, he kills other - becuase to stop doing bad things is to recognize all the bad things he did since then as BAD
So on Geonosis, his point of no return (well, not actually, could turn any time , thats the consistent failing of fallen characters "its too late for me" when it never isn't, but one of his big committing points) he has the chance to tell Obi Wan clearly (ppl dunk on the Jedi but Dooku says a Sith Lord is in control of hundreds of senators, sounds more like an outside actor with a voting bloc) and not declare war on the galaxy, and indeed its on dooku's mind - he's clearly acting conflicted there, and if there was anyone he'd feel he could find common ground with it'd be obi-wan, his apprentice's apprentice and similar attitude jedi. he's in over his head and he, as a former jedi, KNOWS HES HELPING THE BAD GUYS and feels bad about it. he wants someone to stop him. but no one but him can do that.
But that would require a two fold sacrifice - one, sunk cost that they kinda play into Tales of the Jedi (“everything I did would be in vain if I went back now”) , making him have to face that all the evil he did was for nothing + also giving up the secret powers of the dark side and the potential to be emperor of the galaxy remade in however way he wants
being a good person doesn't let you do lightning unforuantley :(
While he’s in conflict during Geonsosis, between those two he chooses to stick with Palpatine knowing completley who he is and what will happen because he values that selfish path more than the selfless path of fixing the galaxy, and makes the choice to execute the Jedi + declare war on the galaxy
Like the big anti yoda quote that gets shared around about Yoda’s 800 year complacently from dark rendevous (solid dooku / yoda book!) , or in TOTJ (intentionally hyporcriritical) whining about the council not taking Qui gons Sith testimony seriously when Dooku is collaborating with Palpatine and actively part of the problem, those are from Dooku's perspective - and Dooku is selfish and evil
And with the dark side, it does corrupt over time - so I can accept he goes more or less full evil by the end of the clone wars. But woul'dve been great to see more of a gradient of his characterization in TCW (same with obi wan and anakin tbh), start with his most major comittment yet to the dark side off of AOTC and feeling conflicted to corruption easier and easier into TCW Dooku , into his unrepentent purge the jedi, form a fascist empire ideal
So i don’t neeeeeed Dooku to be this secret visionary Sith Lord with a heart of gold, because while he starts with potentially admirable aims he stays around for selfish pursuits
Some works that i feel do my ideal spin on dooku
Tales of the Jedi (tho some jedi characters suffer in their portrayals there)
Master and apprentice (minor role0
and revenge of the sith novelization is generally great, but the dooku there is awful. tcw is fun, but like i said just no deeper flavors there imo. havent read all dooku stories so pls recomend!
but yeah, long story short dooku has some broadly good goals to start that anyone can agree with, including the jedi, and they / ppl irl take him at face value good faith that he's brilliant and will work outside the republic to reform it, but dooku is exposed to the truth of the matter - and instead of trying to stop the true problem, he joins it because of selfish wants (dark side + empire) and anything he says post joining palpatine and esp post geonosis about whining about republic corruption or jedi complacency is talkin out his ass
my read on dooku is that he's a brilliant, super capable, powerful man who's lived a life full of expirence and learning and at the end of his life in one last desperate gamble to make his d20 roll turn from 19 to a 20, he knowingly chooses WRONG again and again and again, until it IS too late for him
by the time he sees palpatine turn on him, and he's surprised, he reveals how ignorant he really was - tiger ate my face indeed
