I think the most amusing thing about Itto / Gale (Gelato!!) is that everyone around her would think back to all the times she's complained about immature people, about people who don't pick up after themselves, about people she needs to parent, about people that constantly need direction and supervision. She doesn’t even like tall men, or buff men, and Itto is both. They'd wonder – what happened? How the hell could those two have ended up together? Not realising that Itto would never pretend as though he could never do something. When it is time to celebrate you and your accomplishments, he would never get in the way – he'd be embarrassingly happy about it, even more so than you, and arrange for all sorts of things to celebrate.
And Itto never does things by halves.
There's nothing lazy about him. It shows – in the devoted way he loves his friends and family, in his clumsy attempts to spoil and support Shinobu, in the dogged way he completes the commissions he can get his hands on the best he can, in in the way he gives his all in every fight. In every act of kindness, every act of affection. He is just so earnest.
I think Gale would fall in love with him so quick.
Something about his happy smiles and contagious laughter. His earnest apologies – so genuine, so meek, the effort made toward never repeating a mistake that truly upsets her. He is so loyal, and filled to the brim with so much love – we are used to ascribing a certain simplicity to Itto (and it's not like there's no truth to it) but he is so much more than that.
He's the sort of person to protect those he holds dear, so fiercely he would rather go to prison in their stead. He is so strong, to stand in the face of prejudice and say – no, I will not assimilate. I will be here, and be myself. He is so achingly kind, so unwilling to let someone, anyone yield their life no matter what the cost. He is so respectful of the agency of those around him, but knows which decisions to respect, and which to not – if Itto knows for sure that your choices sideline your wellbeing (or, heavens forbid, your life), he would stand in even your way, no matter how furious you might become.
And he is! So perceptive, so in tune with other people's emotions. He sees through them so clearly and he does not need direction – he is decisive, and will attempt to fix things on his own the best he can. He's!! Gah.
I cannot imagine how many times he'd go – “oh, just spit it out already!” when Gale tries to conceal her feelings. Knock on her door and refuse to leave if she's hiding away for some reason – for a reason he insists she tells him so that he may fix it. The amount of times he's clumsily tried to make her a meal and decided he's better at doing the dishes. Spontaneous presents and hiking trips and happy smiles and contagious laughter, and his giant hand wrapped around hers, and her sprawled across his broad chest night after night. Man. He would just so earnestly be himself, and she would fall in love, and again, and again, and again, every single time.
