Zimbabwean accountant and entrepreneur Thamsanqa Ncube started Miss Zim-SA two years ago to restore confidence in Zimbabweans living in South Africa — showcasing their talents and attempting to dispel the belief that all foreigners are criminals.

Headrest, 19th–20th century Zimbabwe; Shona people Wood

Wood headrests are both a longstanding and widespread form created by African sculptors. Shona sculptors from present-day South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique have contributed a rich range of formal and aesthetic interpretations.

Among the Shona, headrests served as a kind of “pillow” used by adult males to sleep. The user could sleep either on his back with the headrest under the base of his neck, or on his side with the headrest under his chin and one ear. Headrests also provided a means to keep the elaborately braided coiffures of Shona men in good order and free from soil or dust.

Great Zimbabwe Ruins, (2011) 

Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which existed from approximately 1100 to 1400 during the country’s Late Iron Age. The monument, which first began to be constructed in the 11th century acted as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and would have been used as the seat of their political power.

The ruins were first encountered by Europeans in the late 19th century with investigation of the site starting in 1871. The monument caused great controversy amongst the archaeological world, with political pressure being put upon archaeologists by the government of Rhodesia to deny its construction by black peoples. Great Zimbabwe has since been adopted as a national monument by the Zimbabwean government, with the modern state being named after it.

Zim Pride…

I for one have been having a fantastic Easter weekend! I hope your enjoying yours also….For me the last two days have been spent being a spectator at the Zim Pride Soccer Tournament. This has been a joyous initiative that has been created by committee to bring together Zimbabweans from different states. It was great to be part of this, to meet and greet with fellow Zimbabweans in diaspora.
