Having to live in a world where your religion/spirituality is only seen as a weird cringe online thing that no one actually realizes is a spiritual belief and thinks is just "identifying with a character" or making jokes about it sucks and if you try to talk about it people just call it discourse or say you're not letting people have fun (and their fun is making fun of a spiritual belief or misunderstanding the belief because of just how many people co-opted our terms). I just wish I'd be able to say I'm otherkin(d) and alterhuman and people to take it seriously and not think I'm any more or less delusional than they'd think of any other religious person, as well as for it to not be misunderstood. I don't mind if people don't know what it means, but I really hate how people just think it's like, a Tumblr/Twitter/TikTok thing where people relate to a character or bash people for stuff and getting into discourse or doing dangerous stuff. I don't know how to word all this well but...yeah. Just thinking about it. Because of how it's been conflated online, even if you try to explain, people don't understand that yes, it's a genuine spiritual movement, and no, people aren't just having fun, they co-opted religious/spiritual terms which is just as serious and important as with any religious/spirituality. People will say, well, language changes and words change, but you wouldn't say that about terms from other religions or spiritualities being used wrong or improperly.
Homes
A few days ago, in class, my German teacher was trying to explain the concept of 'heimelich'.
And you could see her struggle with the words. The dictionary, she said, couldn't transmit all there was to it. It's something comforting. When refered to a place, it means you feel happy and secure. Where the surroundings are familiar, and people know and care for you.
I don't know more than a pinch of German. But 'heimelich' stuck with me as something the word 'home' couldn't quite grasp.
Do you understand?, she asked, and my classmates nodded. Not out of politeness, as you do in a class when you're completely lost, but vigorously and with fond smiles. Each was maybe thinking of their particular 'heimelich'. It has all your things in it, supplied a girl. And your family too, said another. Of course. Total agreement. 'Heimelich' is evident. The teacher smiled at her studentsâ dutifulness, and passed quickly to the next word.
I couldn't stop thinking about it for days.

What had come to my classmates so easily to comprehend despite a nebulous (at best) definition, I couldn't wrap my head around. I don't get it, dammit, I thought irritated while walking back from college to a house. A house, must be noted, not my house. A means to an end. No family in it. My things packed in a couple suitcases so I can carry them wherever whenever I see fit. Heimelich.
I was upset about it, in the same petty way I was when, at four, I discovered I couldn't roll my tongue. It's not even a matter of homesickness, I thought. If I lived with my loved ones, nothing would really change. I'd start getting restless. Iâd start blaming them for holding me back. In truth, I never could stay in a place for too long. The ground invariably starts itching under my soles. I always want to leave. I always want to fly elsewhere. And I do, and leave a trail of places behind me like used lemons: no matter how hard you squeeze, you won't get a single drop out of them anymore.
But surely there's the place you grew up in, said a friend when I told her my grievances. Everyone it's drawn back there. I wanted to argue: we are no salmons. No reason to be tied to a place that was assigned to you by chance, with no more significance than a name and a gender you didn't pick appear in your birth certificate. But I couldn't be that arrogant: you don't need to be a salmon to have roots. The friend in front of me certainly had perfectly healthy ones. It was me who had lost them along the way.
It's a place you can come back to, my teacher insisted. You know there you'll be welcome by your people. But where? Where is this magical place I can come back to the warmth this word promises? And who are these people you have the audacity to claim as mine? Possibly that's part of the issue. I don't want anyone to be âmineâ as much as I don't want to belong to anyone. Anchors ground you in a storm, but they don't let you sail.
Maybe that's what I do. Sail far. A whole life running away. Escaping from a mysterious and insidious entity that always manages to find me wherever I go. My own shadow, perhaps.
That's a barrier I can't cross, I realized later, thinking back of my classmates enthusiastic smiles. I can't understand 'heimelich' because it's not mine to understand. In my book there are no returns, only new homes to be used and dried up. If I have a home, it's nowhere I can stand. It's not inside any of my suitcases. My home is the vacuum, deep inside my stomach, that appears every time I feel the renewed urge to take off.
I'll have to ask my teacher if there's a word for that.
Sometimes I feel like the labels of ontological otherkin, philosophical otherkin, metaphorical otherkin, etc., should take precedence over psychological otherkin for me. Yeah my therianthropy has psychological causes, I am a psychological therian, but how it manifests, how it affects me, and how I understand/conceptualize it are more important to me. Saying exclusively "psychological therian" has an implication of psychology being the framework. I don't see through a lens of neurology and pathology, I'm not a doctor or a scientist. I'm an artist and storyteller. I see through narrative and symbolism.
Alright. So. I think the main idea of what I'm trying to say (I only think, I can never know what my point is!) is that there's two angles of a given nonhuman identity: cause and framework.
Cause is, of course, the genesis of your identity. How it controls you. For me that's psychology. I am a therian because my brain did something funny early on and continuously and made me internally an animal. It is a starting point. It's the why. For some people it's psychology like me, or neurology, or delusion, or a past life, etc.
Framework is how you analyze your identity, how you approach it, how you let it saturate your life and perspective and influence them. How you control it. For me it's a few things. Philosophy; my identity as an animal is filtered through my personal ontology, my beliefs in Jewish philosophy (not spirituality!), and influences of esthetics and metaphysics. Narrative; I am a writer, and I adapt my understanding and function of my identity to fit a personal narrative, including symbolism and metaphor. For other people it could be spirituality, psychology, religion, folklore/mythology, anything.
We have created a survey for individuals in the plural and system communities. Any system of any origin is welcome to and encouraged to take this survey. We are especially looking forward to hearing about endogenic experiences! We are a traumagenic (likely) DID system and wish to know more about others. This is not being done to judge anyone, no matter the syscourse stances, no matter origins, or how they self identify.
This form is being created and used in order to catalogue a series of differing experiences from a variety of systems within both the plural
About/Information
This survey is being done so that we will be able to possibly make better posts going forward around the experiences others have gone through. We will also at the end be closing this survey and making a document going over and compiling our findings. We will also make that information available.
Survey Closes March 1st, 2023.
Sections
The following is just a brief overview of the sections that this contains so you can decide whether or not you are willing to take this survey.

for the young kin/therians on this website:
you may have heard itâs âjust a phase.â you might even be afraid that your identity is âonly a phase.â
relax.
i just turned twenty-nine. iâve identified as alterhuman in one way or another since i was twelve. i go through ups and downs but this aspect of myself never leaves me. itâs part of me.
if that doesnât quell your fears, consider this: just because something is temporary doesnât mean it isnât important. phases teach you about yourself, allow you to express yourself and explore both yourself and the world around you. donât be afraid. be passionate. have fun. embrace this era of yourself. just because it might be temporary doesnât mean itâs not who you are right now.
When we discovered that we were dragons at nine years old, everyone, absolutely everyone told us that it was a phase and expected us to outgrow it. When we were still identifying as âa dragonâ past our tenth birthday, our mom made us a dragon costume for Halloween, and we wore it every single day after school and to bed for three years after that.
When we came out as trans at 39 and declared ourselves âa girlâ we felt an intense gender euphoria, and we recognized it. It was exactly the same feeling we had when we had declared ourselves âa dragonâ.
Later that year, we started feeling dysphoric about being a girl, but when we tried being a man again it made our dysphoria worse. When we tried on ânon-binaryâ it helped by half. But when we gave in and declared, âwelp, I guess Iâm a dragon,â the euphoria came back!
For a while, we switched between dragon and girl every three months until we figured out it was because weâre plural and multigender, and were switching who was fronting.
Anyway, weâre 47 years old now, and weâre still a bunch of dragons and girls (as gender), and dragons as otherkin/alterhuman/therian/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. Weâre dragons. Itâs real. The euphoria comes back. Especially when other people recognize and acknowledge what we are. Sometimes the phase is a time of self discovery, not a fad, and it leads to a longer phase of just being.
Gonna add to this;
Itâs also okay if it does end up as just a phase. It doesnât mean you were âfakingâ or pretending or anything nor does it make your experiences less real!
Whew, lemme tell ya, it has been a hot minute since we've posted anything, but I think this has been a really good opportunity for us! With our system growing and evolving, we've started being able to properly figure out all the nitty gritty in here. One of our best descriptors for how plurality and kintypes differ was this:
"Kin shifts are different flavors of one drink plurality is smoothies and soda. Sure, they're still drinks, but that's about it!"
After I hopefully crank out the other three pieces I've had stored, I can write a piece on our experience as a system and 'kin
Oh my god, they've been in the drafts for over a year.....

A word on KFF "reclaiming" otherkin terms - be that calling the use of "kin" itself "reclaiming," or things like the recent attempt to "reclaim" the word beastpunk:
You cannot, by definition, reclaim something that never referred to you in the first place. The re- prefix, as in "refill," "repeat," "return," etc., indicates "again" or "back", and it's important - without it, meaning without the thing having already been yours and been taken away from you, it's not "reclaiming," it's just claiming.
Which, if you really want to, I guess you can make an argument about why you want to claim something for yourself that wasn't intended for you, and there's probably situations in which there's a valid argument there - but I would hope that the sentence "I'm claiming this for my group because the coiner excluded us" raises some red flags for you that perhaps framing it as "reclaiming" had disguised, and that you at least stop to rethink the argument and see if it stands up without that righteous flavor that the inaccurate use of "reclaiming" gives it.
hey, shout-out to all the alterhumans who are afraid to talk about aspects of their alterhumanity because they feel like it would be viewed negatively by others. violent instincts or "problematic" relationships or anything else i'm not thinking of right now. i hope you're all feeling good about yourselves and are having a good day
I hardly know where to begin with this. Itâs no secret that Iâm not an avid writer of anything. It just makes me feel pretentious, followed by embarrassed when I see my own words later on. Iâm never satisfied, but this is something that I have to put in words. Not only for my sake, since personally I could know what I know and walk away in silence. But a lie of omission is just as bad, in my view, as a direct one. Itâs for the sake of other people who care, and out of respect for the wider community of fictionkind that Iâm doing my best to make this coherent.
I wish there were others who I could ask. How did you do it? How did you leave? How did this come to an end for you? What did it feel like? Did you mourn? Did you lose faith in yourself? Did other people lose faith in you? Did you circle back again and again to see if it was really over?
Theyâre out there, of course. People like Lupa â a famous example of one who used to be a therian until they realized that theyâre not, and bowed out gracefully. Iâm sure there are others. Unlike former therians, I canât name any fictionkind who came to the conclusion that said label no longer fit them. In a very final way, beyond semantics. Who else has looked inside themselves and noticed a piece missing where a fictotype used to be?
By now, youâre at least mildly surprised.
I donât want to prattle on too long about my history. I awoke 16 years ago and identified as Ichigo Kurosaki. Itâs been a constant in my life like few things have. There are people new to this community who were still babies when I was networking with other fictionkind about it. Itâs been as much a fixture in my life as the color of my hair, or the sound of my mental voice when I think. Itâs how I knew myself, and itâs how other people know me.
Recently, that is within the last couple of years, I grappled with and eventually reconciled the fact that my fictotype was psychological. Before that, for the majority of the time, I was an adamantly spiritual person. In some ways I still am, but as far as Ichigo was concerned, I could no longer suspend my disbelief enough to keep up the act. I wasnât a reincarnated character. None of these events actually happened to me, though my brain was convinced they did.
This fictotype was something that developed over many years, beginning in my early teens. Untreated mental illness and an unstable home contributed to my need to form my identity around something else. In this case, someone else, and that was Ichigo. It helped that we already had a lot in common, to a degree that was almost unsettling. I was eager to forgo rationality and chose what was comfortable. What ultimately gave my life meaning, purpose, and context. None of this was conscious. As I said, I was a spiritual person, and I wasnât able to see these mental calculations taking place. Rarely do we ever see them for what they are in the beginning, or they wouldnât work.
Itâs now almost 2023. Itâs becoming a hell of a lot harder to hide from the truth. As my life improves, the need for old coping mechanisms fades, including the ones that were so covert. With each passing day, I have a little more clarity, and the guilt I feel increases.
Ichigo has begun to feel like a burden, not an identity.
Despite our similarities, and all of the feelings that Bleach invokes, the one thing it doesnât inspire in me anymore is sincerity. It feels, ironically, hollow. Strip away the other characters, the plots, the relationships â when itâs just about Ichigo, I feel a distance. It takes effort to be in that mindset â what you may call a shift â and thatâs a very big red flag that I canât pretend I donât see. There have been times where I tried to force myself to feel things about my source, because the fact that I didnât was terrifying. I felt like a failure and a fraud. The real Ichigo, I told myself, would be ashamed at my indifference.
When I accepted my psychological alignment, it was the precursor to this moment. It allowed me to see that the world wouldnât end if I changed. That I wouldnât become a wreck. That other people wouldnât hate me. That I could grow and be okay. My fictotype was a product of my mind; it gradually arrived, and it can just as well leave. Itâs a paradigm shift that feels like a fist in my chest, slowly unclenching.
My relationship to fiction is still uncertain, and it likely will be for a while yet. Simba on the other hand still feels very prominent in my psyche. My body is in a constantly shifted state that fluctuates perfectly between dragon and lion, or a mix of the two, whenever I want it to do so. This phantom body is overlaid on top of my human one. For even longer than my 16 years as Ichigo, this has been my life. My very first hazy memories in childhood are shaded with my animality. They are inseparable from me, and my therianthropy includes Simba (The Lion King predating Bleach by about 10 years). So technically, you could consider me a fictherian, and Iâll be using the label for a while to see how I feel about it.
There are other characters that Iâve felt connections to, some that I concluded were fictotypes and later decided were not, but none of them were as profound as Ichigo was. I could shrug off a case of mistaken identity without too much issue, but Ichigo felt like an essential part of who I was; a load-bearing pillar that would destroy me if I knocked it down. In all likelihood, it was. I would not have been brave enough, stable enough, to say any of this before I was ready.
Aside from fear of the unknown, my primary emotion at the moment is gratitude, because for all the pain and difficult years, this fictotype helped lead the course of my life down a good path. It got me here, after all. Iâm self sufficient, I have what I need and am working towards what I want, and I can live openly the way I want to. It helped me mature into someone I can be tentatively proud of. It influenced so much, from my masculinity to my sense of style. I learned a lot from my time as Ichigo. Seeing the world through his eyes was illuminating, and Iâm convinced that his portion of my identity kept me afloat during times where I might not have been able to survive. It wasnât all roses, but it made things easier to get through. Whether he's real or not, outside of my own head, isn't for me to say, but I'm grateful nonetheless.
Iâm not going away. In fact Iâm planning to be more active on @sundragon now that I feel more secure in my identity overall. Now that Iâm able to put this saga to rest, Iâm optimistic about who I can be going forward. Iâm still dragonkind after all, and a fictherian. The people I know here and on other websites matter to me. @sundragon, and my new account by the same name on Draconic.com, will be my main haunts for the foreseeable. My hope is that stepping out of Ichigoâs shadow will be just as enlightening as when I was under it.
Recently saw a post saying that seeing âlow kinsâ in someoneâs kinlist is a red flag that theyâre merely KFF and like⌠I GET why (I am not immune to making such judgments myself), but also, is everybody just ignoring the part of âotherkinââs most widely-accepted definition that specifically says itâs âidentifying wholly or partiallyâ as your kintype?
Like⌠that feels like something that deserves more pointing out and exploration, I think? The community places so much emphasis on not being remotely human (whatever âhumanâ means) at all, and ngl to me it sometimes seems like a desperate attempt to simplify and render black-and-white things for the sake of being more âvalidâ to a cruel world that doesnât understand them. One hollers âIâm completely a wolf in mind and spirit!â, but how much of that is out of desperation to have outsiders see them as their kintype at all? Does it not make one feel sad and invalid if they donât have a shift in long enough? Feel that theyâre not âwolfâ enough and might be wrong?
Would someone appear âcringeâ if they said they were âhalf dragonâ or âa little bitâ of a fox? Probably. But ALL otherkin and alterhumans are that as well, to an outside viewer looking to gawk at a poorly-understood subculture.
Are there too many KFF folks out there making fakey kinlists of every character and species they relate even a little to? Yeah, probably, but that shouldnât be a reason to completely brush off those who may fit more into the âpartialâ definition of an otherkin identity. It really is a facet of otherkinity that seems to be ignored a lot in favor of being completely something, and it deserves more respectful documentation so we can all be less confused and more understanding of it.
Remember to write down your memories and noemata the moment they show up, or you will forget them. Don't fall for the "I'll remember it later". It's a trap. You will not remember it later.
Thoughts on the new factkin discourse? I mean, I get it but "kintypes can never be human" excludes quite a lot of fictionkin from the definition
The experiences I've read from factualkin don't sound like simple past lives (never mind that not every one of them has a spiritual basis for their identity). It sounds like these people have more in common with human(oid) fictionkind than they do with humans from outside the community. Because of these similarities (and despite their human identities) I do not believe it will be detrimental to us to let factualkin to use the otherkin tag, since that's basically the community hub here on tumblr (I don't think anyone searches the alterhuman tag before they search the otherkin tag when looking for alterhuman posts, though that might just be my own bias). I don't believe any harm will come from allowing space for factualkin in the otherkin tag.
The existence of factualkin leaves a bad taste in many community members' mouths, but so does the existence of nonhumans with nonhuman attractions or fictionkind with problematic kintypes or otherkind with kintypes that are just too weird, etc. Being uncomfortable about someone else's identity/self-perception (with no regard for their actual actions) is not an excuse to exclude them from community hubs. And I fear it will be more detrimental to our community's development to exclude them than to welcome them. I believe our community will benefit from hearing factualkin narratives.
I really believe factualkin have more in common with fictionkind than not. After all, none of us can know what really goes on inside the minds of celebrities and historical figures - all we know are the 2-dimensional and, dare I say it, fictionalized versions of them that have been presented to the public.
Are factualkin otherkin? That's too complicated to answer, since they're not other-kind-than-humankind, but they are arguably fictionalized versions of people other than their present selves, which is definitely not a human experience. I don't think prescribing a definition to these kinds of words is very helpful.
A better question would be: Do factualkin find themselves at home around otherkind? Do they feel at home with the kinds of support, experience sharing, and narratives we have here? And that question is for factualkin themselves to answer.
If you come to me and say "the things you discuss and the ways you discuss it and the community you've built and the ways you present yourselves all resonate with me" then I'm not gonna tell you to bugger off just because you don't fit the dictionary definition of what our community is about. If you tell me you feel more at home here than anywhere else, then my door is open. And if you later find a community elsewhere then you're free to leave and I'll rest in the knowledge that I provided shelter for you when no one else could or would.
very curious if others have experience with sensory shift .
some time in past have moment that can only describe as " night vision " and still no idea why happen . not that eyes just adjust , but as if crank up . could not see colour very well , everything still very grainy , but this near pitch black room suddenly fade in this orange wash on top .
this never happen again , and can not find anyone describe , so nonhuman thing is all can assume at moment . feel that eyes adjust fairly quick in dark , but still do see as is . not perfect compare , this incident more like how older night vision cameras see , if in orange . very grainy , still dark , but able make out shapes and some details .
I have had sensory shifts, but only when it comes to smells. When it happens, it feels like my sense of smell becomes so much stronger and every scent is impossible to ignore.
My theory is that it's tied to my migraines, which make me more sensitive to smells. Except, when it's migraine related it's uncomfortable. When it's a shift it's just intriguing. I also think it's less that my sense of smell becomes stronger and more that I become focused on it.
Theres many times where our eyesight height changes! Its very disorienting, we'll be seeing higher than what we feel we should be able to- its as if everything got shifted up a foot or so even if logically it likely hasn't. Weve had this on and off since we were in 7th grade and we thought it might have a tie to our of body experiences and dissociation but we're not quite sure!
Aside from that theres been smaller instances of where our eyesight just feels... sharper? In a way? Not as noticable on only really noticable if its in an area that's normally hard to see. Its likely just that we're more focused/aware of it as well but we can't figure out a pattern with it
Alright therians, if you could pick 1 animal to transform into (and back) at will, but it CANNOT be any of your theriotypes, what would it be? Feel free to include your reasoning!
I think we would choose a bear. It would just be really cool to be huge and powerful and fluffy, and cuddle with my pals and partners.Â
Would love to be a tasmanian devil, simply just to make this soundÂ
Sometimes you just need a little unholy screech to unleash from your little animal throat
i would love to know what existence feels like as an earthworm, or perhaps a toad. the euphoria of touching mud, could you imagine?
Can I pick a gaur or is that too similar to bison? xD
I think Iâd pick something aquatic. I canât imagine what it would be like to live in such a three-dimensional world. Perhaps a beaked whale - theyâre the deepest diving mammal that we know of.
What's the spite convention for? eyes
Anon, I don't know if or how long you may have been following me for, but do you know how I got my start in alterhuman circles? How I ended up becoming at least somewhat known in communities, what inspired me to start writing and creating content in the alterhuman community, first on Tumblr, then on my own website and in my own publications?
Someone told me that I wasn't good enough, that I wasn't "important" enough. That I could never hope to make an impact, that I could never hope to bring about change. And it lit a fire of inhuman fury in my heart that's never. Fucking. Gone. Out.
Watching Naia Okami look the OtherCon chair dead in the eye and sneer at him about his supposed lacking of any renowned, trying to frame it as something pitiful or making it self-serving that he continues to go out of his way to host this event, to use her words, "despite being a relatively unknown person in the community," makes me enraged beyond language could ever hope to convey.
How fucking dare someone try to imply that another individual and their work is worth less simply because of something as nebulous and finicky and impermanent as 'community fame.' What gives them the right? What sort of crown of authority do such snotmuzzles, with their myths on the importance of gilded fake internet points above all else, have?
I could be nice, and say that such language and perspective is because of a sole familiarity only with cookie-cutter content creations, pushed onto Naia and others due to how the modern Internet works with us artists desperately trying to appease the algorithm and similar. That, perhaps, given she is simply something closer to a television personality, it could be said she just lacks any understanding or experience of how much more important âheartâ and âeffortâ is in any given piece than âfameâ.
But Iâm not going to be nice, because I donât believe that to be the case. Because Iâve been at the end of that sneer before, if not Naiaâs, then certainly othersâ. Itâs never out of ignorance; itâs out of malice. Itâs people trying to make themselves seem bigger by making everyone else seem smaller, trying to create their own little cliques with their ever-changing goal posts, trying to smear otherâs achievements to hide their own failings and pitiful self-worth issues. Itâs people kicking others down into the earth and standing on their back for a little extra height to try and proclaim themself a lord and all others peons. Itâs people who donât want a community: they want a narrative that they can control, that centers themself and others like them, whether that be in an exclusionary sense or merely in a greedy, spotlight sense.
Itâs fucking immoral, itâs destructive, and itâs not behavior we, as a community, should ever condone or accept as okay. Maybe itâs the scholar in me, maybe itâs the psychopomp in me, maybe itâs something else, but I refuse to sit back and let someone try and demolish the hard work of a convention and disavow multiple convention chairs just because the people actually putting out the work for these amazing events arenât also in these so-called ârenownedâ folksâ petty little groups, on their knees worshiping social status and popularity.Â
Fuck the groveling at the altar of upvotes, of likes, of views, of clicks. Fuck the idea that someoneâs contributions to community spaces are based purely on how well they appease this nebulous god âPopularity.â It means nothing and I refuse to pretend that it means anything. This is my ode to that. This is me digging my claws into the ground and saying, no, fuck you, I was that person who was disregarded and insulted for being ânewâ and a so-called âunknownâ and I will never stop supporting people who are accused and belittled of the same, but who still create and share their joy with others even despite that. I and others like me will outlast any pathetic exclusionary, spotlight-desperate attempts at a hierarchy of experience, in both the terminological sense and longevity sense, and this is my fuck you, go ahead and try to anyone who wants to think otherwise.Â
âGreymuzzleâ isnât a term that people get applied to them because theyâve shown up on television, or because they have oh-so-many TikTok followers. Itâs a community term given based on what people actually do in the community, existing entirely outside of shit like having your own KnowYourMeme page; itâs a title that denotes respect and appreciation earned on your own merit, never something self-given and always community-bestowed. And people who sprout shit trying to advocate for some sort of nonsensical, holier-than-thou âYou Must Have X Followers To Rideâ bullshit system are no greymuzzles. Our community will never stop prioritizing what people make with their own two paws, and if I can help that in my own way by hosting a future event where anyone, especially, as Naia put it, ârelatively unknown person[s]â can showcase the things they love to talk about, their art, their writings⌠then, by gods, itâs my fucking duty to.Â
