you put this in the grell tag so i assume you wanted people to see it. now, i have some things to add, and iâm gonna make this as comprehensive and unbiased as possible. i was questioning where this came from so iâm just gonna go instance by instance. long post for ts for comprehension. for the sake of remaining unbiased iâm also gonna stick to the official translation where i can. letâs got case by case, starting with the manga:
  ⹠first interaction, pages 20-28 on chapter 12 (x):
literally the only thing she says is, quoting from the official translation: âwilliam! you came to rescue meâ. he then proceeds to land on her face and kick her repeatedly while he lists her transgressions. he drags her by the hair, she complains (âlisten! i was about to get killed, you hear!? youâre so coldââ) and gets interrupted when he uses her hair as leverage to throw her and slam her on the ground. he then speaks to sebastian, says itâs time to return and drags her out of frame by the hair.
  ⹠chapter 35, brief mention on page 35 (x):
i donât have the official translation for this manga but grell is only briefly mentioned anyway, with will saying heâs worried heâd âhave to look after that thing againâ. i vaguely remember them mentioning her once or twice in the rest of the arc but it was mostly sebastian and as far as i remember it was just a passing comment, nothing about her disposition.
  ⹠chapter 65, pages 9-11 (x):
he picks her and ronald up, unconscious, kicks them both until theyâre awake. she groans, goes âwill! ~â„â when she sees him, launches herself at him, says âyou came to get me, didnât you!!â, he ducks, pushes her head underwater with his scythe and says âthis is no pick-upâ and that he came to âclean up after a certain piece of trashâ who canât do their job right.
onto the anime (iâm skipping ep 6 since it was the same as chapter 12, and also skipping eps 12 & 17 because willâs not in them at all, not even a mention):
  ⹠episode 18:
grell & sebastian enter the library, he uses his scythe to almost stab both (they both ducked) on sight, barely even before seeing them, threatens to demote her for bringing in âverminâ, she says nothing particularly flirty other than explain why theyâre there. further ahead, she swoons about him, her and sebastian forming a trinity but he doesnât do anything, undertaker walks by, she says âwait. why are youââ, he hits her on the head and tells her to mind her language.
no altercation happens on ep 24, and theyâre not together in any eps in season two, so iâm skipping to the ovas theyâre in together:
  ⹠hamlet ova:
he cuts off her gondola, says some more remarks about her work, she swoons about so many men being around her but doesnât get particularly touchy with anyone (is leaning more towards sebastian even), heâs then seen pulling her ear.
  ⹠welcome to the phantomhives ova:
sheâs telling sebastian that she helped too and wants to be held bridal-style, opens her arms, william enters the scene by hitting her head with his scythe from behind, then he asks the POVâs characters name when she says sheâs doing her job (which supposedly was to reap the POV), he hits her again with his scythe saying she made a mistake. he then makes her row on her own.
⹠the tale of will the reaper ova:
arguably the one where she flirts with him the mostâ yet also the only one where she does and he doesnât lay a finger on her. she gets close, he moves away. (mind you this is also someone who didnât let ciel get 3cm into his space before whacking him, and as seen previously, he has no problems with whacking her if he wants space.) when she starts going on dramatically about âback thenâ he just lets her wax poetic with an annoyed expression. his brow twitches, he says he wants to forget about it, she keeps going on, still doesnât touch her, just moves away and says that their past is âthe only taintâ in his entire life. he then talk about their work, moves away, she says heâs handsome, he then turns around, quotes her, and his eyes go soft.
⹠the most beautiful death in the world musical:
she asks if heâs jealous about sebastian âtaking her heartâ, he twists her arm. they arenât together again until the very end, already ooc when theyâre bowing to the audience, and at that point he drags her out by her hair (for a more ic thing i suppose, you can tell theyâre careful with it probably because of ueharaâs wig).
donât get me wrong, william is one of my problematic faves and iâm about as much of an apologist for him as they come, and iâm also aware grell is problematic. but to call him an abuse vicitm is kind of a stretch when him hitting her is, most of the times, unprovoked, and usually when sheâs speaking to someone other than him, even. if i left out any scene that says otherwise, it wasnât intentional, iâm trying to be as comprehensive as possible.
read âgone girlâ, theyâre nick & amy dunne levels of fucked up.
