Illogical

Bobbi shrugged, “That’s the reason.  They want to justify their actions, and validate themselves.  People with no talent cling to hate to justify their own mediocrity.”  Her eyebrows twitched in annoyance, “I’ve met a lot of scientists who weren’t worthy of the name who clung to the fact that they were men to feel superior to me.  There are people who buy into the idea that white people are superior because they themselves have nothing valuable to contribute to the world.”

She sighed, “If you dehumanise people, you can do anything you like to them.”

That certainly would explain the actions of the people in the lab from before.  They treated all the experiments as objects, property.  Not actual people.   

“Why would skin color make one superior to another?  That has no link to intellect or ability.”  Isaac didn’t quantify talent because that was simply honing an action into skill.   Some had a natural ability to do things but talent due to work and repetition.  “Their logic is flawed.”

“I guess our situations differ on that account, then,” Jemma replied softly. She did not think Isaac was wrong in his decision. What she said had been in response to the decisions she had made. “I was judge, jury, executioner for the sake of my own survival. No one else’s. And the worst of it was until that point I had been helping them, once again for my own survival. So in the end, am I not just as guilty?”

Jemma smiled at him. “It’s easier once you find people who actually understand you, or at least try to because they care about you, isn’t it?”

Jemma began to tear up again. The longing she felt for Fitz was so deep she could hardly breathe when the waves came. No one would ever understand her the way he did. People used to joke they were one person and she’d pretend to be annoyed at it, but being without him so long, she really did feel like a huge part of herself was missing.

“Perhaps,” Isaac’s thoughts went straight to Bobbi.  Why she took such an interest and choose to help him still baffled him at times.  Everything about it remained true through observation and his own personal preferences.   So no real reason to test it further.   A part of him didn’t want to, as illogical as it might seem.   He choose not to focus on that.

“Emotions are illogical.   They have no grounding in facts and can cause people to react irrationally.   They can cause a great deal of destruction, both self inflicted and to others.”  He’d seen it time and time again.  As much as he’d seen how people here could  . . feed off emotions in a way that seemed positive to him Isaac couldn’t disprove his previous findings on them.   

“I am still evaluating what people consider to be the ‘good’ aspects of them.”

“I want to be clear with you about something,” she looked at him seriously, making sure that he could see her total sincerity.  “You are a real person, and anybody who treats you like you’re less is the one who is not acceptable.  Okay?”  She hoped this would make sense to him.

Easy enough to accept that Bobbi believed that.  What Isaac needed was facts that could help him solidify that believe.  Observational data.  In the strictest of definition he fit the parameters of an intelligent individual person.   Anything outside of that could be considered prejudiced.  He still sorted through it a part of him wanting to just wait for things to be proven out.   So he simply nodded in response.

“I do not understand why people would  . . dehumanize other individuals.   Unless it is some sort of attempt to justify their actions.”

“That’s where I struggle ethically,” Jemma admitted. “I have a hard time punishing someone for a crime they have yet to commit. What if we could have prevented them from doing it and converted them to the good side? But if we don’t take action, we’ve condemned the world. No one person should have to make that decision, but that’s usually what it comes down to–one person. Then we have to hope that decision that was forced upon us makes us the hero and not the villain of the story.” “Thank you for the offer. I enjoy your company and your insight.”

Isaac cocked his head curious.  “They already committed a crime as I understand it.  They performed experiments that would have been classified as torture.   They followed no ethical board.   They created life, and considered them nothing more than property to do with as they wished.   Nor did they believe they should be put under any judgement.”   He didn’t understand precisely why it should be an ethical struggle.

He reached down to stroke Beaker’s head around his ears.   “I did not talk this much.  Before.”   Isaac didn’t know how to expound upon it.

“Well, not many people have asserted that I’m not human in my life.  And I developed the serum that changed me myself.”  She said simply.  “In general, normies are quicker to accept people like me, who were augmented rather than born, as human.  I don’t really know why.  If my baby ends up with powers people will treat her worse for it than they do to me.”  Was that something Bobbi had on her mind a lot lately?  Absolutely.

“When you get down to it, there’s been no sign that any of us are losing the ability to reproduce with each other, so we can safely be categorised as the same species.”  Biology could be terribly simple sometimes.

Could he reproduce?   The consideration hadn’t exactly be something he prioritized.   He’d have to check his file for what editing they may have done to his genome in that regards.    They might have wanted more control over him than to allow such a thing.   

“So they would not find me acceptable.”   Which did not surprise him.  The ones in charge certainly did not see him as human.   Instead they viewed him as property.   A creation not an individual.

“Yes, I’ve provided her with my studies on the test samples too. Hopefully all of our work coming together will result in some sort of lead to a vaccine. We have some of the greatest minds here, if we can’t figure it out, well, let’s hope we do.”

Jemma considered what he said before asking, “Did you kill people who were not infected?”

“Yes.  Though inevitably their faulty logic would have caused them to become infected.   They thought to control those that were.  An army to control the world.   So I stopped them.”   A simple solution perhaps, but the plan was anything but.   It took patience and precision.

Isaac would help with the cure but . .”Biology is not my preferred field.   But if you need anything built let me know.”  That at least he could handle.

She gave a small smile, still hugging him around the shoulders.  “That’s a matter of opinion.  There are both mutants and humans who do not consider mutants to be human, and they vary on whether they consider that a positive.  But homo sapiens and homo superior are both species of humanity in a scientific sense, and that’s the way I choose to look at it.”  She wasn’t sure if that amount of subjectivity would help him here.

Isaac considered her words as he kept leaning into her.   “How do you scientifically define humanity?  I know with mutants the X gene is something that naturally occurs within them.  Yet there are those that have outside forces that affected their change.  Are they still human?”  Was he?

His brain latched onto the intellectual puzzle as a distraction from the . . other issues.   Logic, information gathering, forming observations and adding to his breadth of knowledge some of his primary goals after all.  Secondary to survival.   This he didn’t risk anything as dangerous as emotions.  Issac could be objective to this.

“Execution is almost never perfect, even in a controlled environment. And this was the opposite of a controlled environment. It was chaos.  And it should have never fallen on you to have to make that decision. I’m sorry it did.”

Jemma’s instinct was to place a comforting hand on his shoulder, but from her observations so far, it would make the young man uncomfortable. Instead she offered him a small smile.

“I’m sure you have come to a similar conclusion as I: There is no saving the already infected. The incubation is too fast, organ failure too fast. There was nothing you could have done to help them. ‘Dealing with them’ was the only logical option.”

“You are quite correct.  Once they reached the final stage there is no way to cure the virus.  Too many biological changes that could not be reversed.   I copied their findings and gave that to Bobbi.”  Well he downloaded as much as he could from their computers before his escape.   It could prove useful at some point.

It it all boiled down to one point.  “I wanted to survive.  Ergo, I made the choices that would give me the best chance for it.   Regardless of who I killed in the process.  It ended up being the most logical decision I could make.  I do not regret my actions.  Though from some of what I have read there should have been a moral dilemma in what I did.”  A more intellectual pursuit to try and understand them.

Jemma hung on to his every word, even though each seemed calculated. There were moments she almost felt like if everyone was okay with what Isaac did, then maybe they could eventually forgive her too. But she knew the situation was different. He stopped the bad guys to save himself and others. She released another virus to save herself.

She looked up at Isaac, confused. “Of course not. It was the logical solution.”

“Even if my execution was imperfect?”  Now the more difficult part.  Admitting in any way shape or form something akin to failure.   “Some of the infected culls survived and followed me here.   They threatened people here,  and had to be dealt with.”  Something prodded at him to expand upon the subject for her.   Slowly he’d been learning to listen to some of those.   The danger warnings certainly saved his life.

“They were, in a way, my siblings.   I’m still examining that concept.”  Isaac still worked on what family would mean to him.   Or how to define it.  As while it implied blood relations he saw some families that did not require it.  Confusing.   And yet he did something taboo in killing things genetically related to him.  Even through he considered them to be something worse than dead by being infected.

Jemma accepted his point with a nod. Discussing morality in science with someone who seemed unbiased was refreshing, honestly. It made her question her stances, which any debate worth having should. But it also made her nervous considering the questionable decisions she had made. And by questionable, she meant wrong.

“Yes, a simplification. I guess I’m used to simplifying problems for people. Most don’t understand when I whip out algorithms with thousands of variables,” Jemma started rambling but stopped short when her brain processed the last part of what he said. Her breath caught and she fought tears back.

“And they forgave you for that,” she swallowed hard, unsure if it was a question or a statement. The difference between him and her though, is he was certain the world was better off from what he did. She was not sure of that with what she did. And she definitely felt regret every moment since.

Forgave?  An interesting concept when it came to his actions.  Isaac considered them necessary for survival.  “I would categorize it as a decision they did not find fault with.   I performed no transgression against any here in Haven.   I was not free to leave, nor would they allow me to leave, which would classify me as being held against my will.  In addition they consisted a threat to the greater population as a whole.”  A repetition yet she appeared to desire an understanding of the situation.

 Perhaps under these circumstances he should expand some.   “I wanted to survive.  If I did not both escape and ensure they could not continue their actions I would not have.  I have yet to speak with someone that disagreed with my actions.  Do you?”  Curiosity prompted his question more than anything else.

Isaac felt utter confidence that Bobbi would ensure he could still stay there.  Her actions proven that hypothesis to be true.   So there should not be any negative consequences for sharing more details with her.

“They do.  Human reactions are not always correct the first time around.  We are flawed, but that’s okay.”  She tidied his curls a little.  “Here, flaws are not dangerous.  I’m not saying you have them, but if you did, no one here would hurt you for it.”

She squeezed his shoulders, and rested her cheek against the top of his head.

“There are many flawed individuals here.”  That he picked up immediately.  Emotional outbursts, illogical behavior, less than exemplary skills.  Which would not have been tolerated in the place he was before.  One of the things he’d been trying to reconcile from the beginning.   Of course they all started out as people.   Isaac started out as a lab experiment.  

“Are they all considered human?  Everyone here?”

Illogical

“I don’t think he’s testing you.  Tony doesn’t behave that way.”  She replied, apologetic.  “You may not be emotional but Tony is, which means he can react unpredictably.  But it also means that he can go away, take some time, and think about how he really feels.”

It was difficult to offer comfort to someone who couldn’t acknowledge that they were upset.  She couldn’t force him to understand that his feelings were natural and okay.  She sighed, and stroked his hair back from his face.  “Perhaps you should get some rest.  Let your mind recharge.”

Logical.  “True, sleep allows for the remove of chemicals that make you feel tired and can reset the brain.”  While he required less sleep than the typical adolescent Isaac still did need it.   Methodical about meeting all his needs as to be able to do optimal work.  He could and had actually gone days without sleep it didn’t always make for his most precise work.

Relaxing back into Bobbi’s side Isaac rationalized that this managed to be another form of rest.   Often feeling refreshed after spending time with her and Beaker.  The patient dog’s tail thumped against his side.  “Emotions take time to process?”

Bobbi gave a small, understanding smile.  “I think you should consider that perhaps you are having an emotional reaction here.  And that’s okay.  You aren’t going to be punished here for feeling.”

If emotions were resuming their usual course within him, it would only hurt him to pretend they didn’t exist.  Well, it couldn’t only hurt him.  Suppressed emotions could manifest in a multitude of ways.

“I am not flawed.  I was created to have only logic.   Logic is stronger, rational and better than any emotion.”   It is what he knew, what made sense.   Emotion did not.   Deviation made one a cull.  Culls were discarded.   

Suddenly Isaac’s head snapped up.  “Is this a test?  Is he testing me?”   Now that would make the whole situation fall into something he understood.   Something that he knew how to handle.   If he could gauge what the expectation was, he could adjust accordingly.

Illogical

“People are illogical,” Bobbi replied, not placing any inflection of moral assessment on that fact.  “I’m constantly worried.  It doesn’t keep me from being a highly effective person, or so I think, anyway.”  Her constant worry was definitely a symptom of her pregnancy, but that was neither here nor there.  She was managing her fear.

“So you’re feeling … emotionally strange?”  She didn’t know how else to phrase it.

“I don’t have emotions, emotions are illogical.  Therefore I do not have them.”   The words came out in that same flat even tone.  Isaac shivered as he kept Beaker close.   The dog’s warmth seemed to help but he still felt, cold.   But he wasn’t supposed to admit weakness.  Why did he keep doing so?

“Worry is a waste of energy and mental resources.”   What was this struggle?  His brain kept shifting between possibilities.   Scenarios, diagnosis, old rules, new observations, attempts to keep expectations blank, many other things.  The clash became chaotic disorder that unnerved him.
