              steve gives a gracious nod, and holds onto the leash, leading milly to the elevator. she tries to grab it in her mouth, wanting to lead herself, apparently, but steve is careful to keep a good grip on her. it’s warm outside, the sun beating down on them between high rooftops, and it’s good. it’s nice. steve squints, wishing now that he’d brought his sunglasses. “park sounds good. do they still have that ice cream truck parked by the lake?”

A  SMILE  TUGS  UPON   his mouth as steve instantly   TAKES   milly well in hand,   praising her when she walks neatly beside them both.                 ❝ i   HOPE   so.   that ice cream is the best.   i used to end up going down there every day,   even though it meant there were loads of photos of me online with ice cream and   RUMOURS   that i was using   GOOD   suits to hide how fat it was making me.  ❞                he laughs at the memory,   refuses to let himself think of the way the past tastes   BITTER   in his mouth when he thinks of his legs.

“WHY would howard have ANYTHING to do with you being on the team?” that had a momentary look of confusion etched onto his face. when they’d given him all the files of course tony’s name brought up thoughts of howard. but he barely knew the elder stark; not like he’d gotten to know tony. “i wanted you on the team because you were an asset, you brought something to the table that we could use NOT because you’re howard’s son.” god, steve hadn’t thought he would need to defend each and ever decision he made. not to tony, of all people. he’d thought the other would understand. but then again, he’d left him alone in siberia. what sort of friend would ever do that to another? “you were — are my friend. or i thought i was.”

SURPRISE  CAUSES  DARK  EYES   to widen,   for tony had   ALWAYS   thought it was his father’s name that had influenced steve to allow him to become an avenger.                 ❝ i  THOUGHT   you were too,?  ❞                 it is all he can think to say,   even if it is harsh,   even if it is   CRUEL.   he remembers the terror as his legs became numb and the fear that had   CHOKED   him when he wondered how long he would   LAY   there with the taste of blood in his throat.                 ❝ you left me,   steve.   i’ve   NEVER   been so fucking scared as i was then.  ❞

no matter how many   TIMES   tony has told him not to,   steve begins to push the chair.   tony   BITES   back the irritation and his pride,   for he is not in the mood to   FIGHT   today,   and he can see the tension in the sharp line of steve’s shoulder and the   TIGHT   quality to his voice.                  ❝ well,   i’d definitely take that one as a win for now.   things could be worse,   and that’s what we gotta remember. ❞
