On Taxidermy, Dizzy Q is credited for bass and backing vocals. I know about Dizzy Q Viper, but what does this entail and who is this? On Losers Like You there is a credit to Princess Adreena, before I thought Garside and Gray were supposed to be back in contact? Love history lessons
Wow, you're really perceptive! Especially about Princess Adreena detail. Dizzy Q on Taxidermy credits is 100% Crispin. When Katie and Crispin were recording Taxidermy, they didn't have a bass player yet.
And yes, Princess Adreena was Katie. A lot of articles state that Katie and Crispin started Queen Adreena in 1999 and they usually rolled with it (technically... they started releasing records and touring in 1999), but they had been in contact waay earlier. Katiejane was in Lake District only for a year, then apparently lived in mountains in Wales. She moved back to London in 1996-1997. At some point she & Crispin randomly met because they lived in the same area 2 streets away from each other. They were friends again but didn't start a new band quite yet. In 1996 Crispin was still playing in Dizzy Q Viper, in 1997 in Vapid Dolly.
At the same time Katiejane had another project/band with her boyfriend, they played "electronic music". She had a manager (possibly record label interested? Look at the clipping) but it went nowhere. She used a writing name Princess Adreena.
All these bands kind of flopped and probably around late 1997/1998 Crispin and Katie started working on new demos. He played her a tape with Pretty Polly and that sealed the deal :) They just named the band Queen Adreena. (Name origin is mentioned here)
If you're looking for examples of them outwardly stating dates it will be hard (maybe they mention them in more recent podcast interviews?) But facts are like this: Queen Adreena had already been touring in 1999. Ride a Cock Horse came out in 2008, in one interview KJ referred to it as something they recorded "10 years ago" (so 1998). Losers Like You came out in 1996, and Crispin's bands stopped functioning in 1997. This confirms to me they had reconnected in 1996.
I don't think any of them have ever talked about what Katie Jane was doing on this album, she doesn't play any instruments. It says "remixed by" so maybe she was just present in the recording studio and offering advice?
