Update

As per my last post, I have a status update...

They said that they would only be able to give me school credit for the internship and that they might phase back in to working from their office in LA. 

Given those are two things that I was not looking for, I respectfully declined continuing the internship through the summer. On that note, if anyone is reading this and has a remote summer internship opportunity that is paid... hit a girl up.

To do, or not to do...

...that is the question. 

Exciting news: My internship reached out to me and asked if I would want to come back and intern for them for the summer! They said that Amy Stanton, the CEO, enjoyed having me in the office and was impressed by my growh and work. It was such a nice email to have waiting for me in my inbox. 

That being said, I have a few concerns. 

First, I am going to staying home for the summer and was looking for a paid opportunity locally. This way, I would be saving money and (hopefully) making money. Stanton & Co. mentioned that it would be an opportunity for course credit... 

Second, I would have to be working remotely. Moving back down to LA would be amazing, but in times like these it wouldn’t be the smartest of moves. Plus, I would have to look for a place and pay rent. 

Third, I am planning on studying for the GRE this summer. Even though I still have my senior year ahead of me, I figured this was a good opportunity to really focus on my path towards earning my master’s. I’ll have the time, so why not? Hopefully S&Co. will allow flexibility on summer hours. 

So, I emailed S&Co. back thanking them (of course), inquiring about the possibility of getting a stipend for the internship, and asking if they are looking for someone to work remotely. We’ll see what they say! Regardless, it feels good to know that your work has helped a company and that they want you for a little longer.

So Covid-19 happened...

...and is continuing to happen.

With LMU moving online and self quarantine efforts rising, I’ve moved back home with my family in the Central Valley. At first, I was pretty upset because I would be away from some of my senior friends, but I’ve come to accept it. I mean it isn’t the end of the world yet, right? Now, I’m actually enjoying it a lot. My little sister’s school is also online, so we have similar schedules. Being at home with her, my mom, and my dad (and cat!) is really a blessing. I mean, not many people are able to spend this much time with their family, so I’m really trying to relish in the moments.

In terms of my internship, they’ve moved online as well. Not to roast them too hard (please don’t come for me Stanton & Company, I’m grateful I have this experience!!), but the transition has been rough. Suddenly, my work load has increased and since communication is difficult, I’ve come across a few work-related issues. Plus, I don’t get to interact with the fellow interns... :( However, I’m determined to stick it out! I have until the end of the month, so wish me luck!

It’s really interesting to expereince an internship at a relatively small firm... Everyone is always working on tasks that have immediate deadlines. There’s no room for error. I always feel a little anxious when I walk into the doors of S&Co., but I think it’s good. I’d like to see what working for a bigger firm would be like. Maybe for my next internship? For now, you can find me curating media lists galore :)

Week 3: Getting into it

So the administrative tasks have slowly come to a halt as I finally was able to connect with Nicole, my “mentor” at S&Co. She gave me a quick debrief about the clients we’ll be working with (Koia, Pure, & Four Sigmatic). The day’s tasks included updating and adding to media lists and checking social media, but next week I’ll start digging into writing pitches! A little nervous since my experience is limited to the two PR classes I had under my belt prior to this semester, but I’m excited nonetheless. Updates to come!

Ground Work

Hi, I’m Isa (pronounced like E-sah for the little voice in your head reading this) !

I’m currently a junior Communications Studies Major and PR Minor studying at LMU in Los Angeles. 

This semi-visual blog is for me (and whoever else is reading this) to reflect on my experience interning and to get a real world perspective. This semester I just began at Stanton & Company, a health and wellness PR firm in Marina Del Rey that represents brands such as Dazzle Dry and Koia. This is only my second internship (and my first one was during my senior year of high school). So, safe to say its been a while... 

Let’s see what this semester has in store for me! Fingers crossed it’s free stuff!  And learning new skills that’ll broaden my abilities in the field, of course...
