I do not know how to explain to liberals and supposed leftists that putting people in hotel rooms temporarily is not “ending homelessness” because a hotel room is not a home!!!
Some kinds of homelessness:
living on the streets
living in a tent city or shanty town
living primarily in shelters
living in a motel room because you have enough money saved to do so
living in your car or other vehicle
couch surfing
living in temporary housing
squatting in an empty home
livng in a friend or family member’s guest room
Most of those include having shelter, but homelessness isn’t about not having a roof over your head, it’s about being in an unstable living situation.
For someone to not be homeless, they need to have a space that is entirely their own, that they are not at risk of being thrown out of suddenly. They need to have a space that is secure, safe, and stable to live in full-time, a space that they have legal and social rights to.
A hotel room is not a home.
Everyone who has ever stayed in a hotel knows and understands this. But suddenly, we’ve decided that that’s an acceptable living situation for homeless people? We’ve decided that that’s enough of a “home” to brush those people off as no longer homeless and therefore no longer our concern? Do you all realize how absolutely ridiculous that is?
“Ending homelessness” does not mean shoving homeless people into whatever spaces are empty at the moment and then shoving them back out when they become inconvenient. It means actually providing legal, stable, and safe housing for everyone.
This is absolutely true. Putting people in hotels does not end homelessness. It is not an acceptable long-term solution.
But in the immediate short-term,where I live, about 9,000 people are in overcrowded shelters and encampments and any minute COVID-19 is going to rip through those crowded unsanitary spaces just like it’s ripping through the jails. It’s not possible to socially distance in a shelter or on the street. It’s not possible to wash your hands consistently or quarantine if you show symptoms. Those things are possible in hotel rooms. There’s a reason NYC is setting aside thousands of hotel rooms to quarantine infected/exposed health care workers: a hotel room, with its own bathroom and a door that closes, is fairly well-suited to quarantine in an emergency situation (which this is).
Every frontline homelessness and housing rights organization in San Francsico that I know of right now—including/especially the Coalition on Homelessness, whose leadership I put a lot of faith in—is calling for the mayor to open hotels for homeless people. Not as a long-term solution, but as an emergency life-saving measure. Hotel rooms will not end homelessness. But they might forestall a mass death wave in the shelters and on the streets in the next week and a half.
I don’t know who this is, but he’s made my day.
