Rice Tapestry
After I completed my Thesis II project, where I used rice to cover the interior of cabinets I made, I had these empty bags of rice left over. I immediately felt a connection with the material. I had chosen to use the rice because of the memories I had associated with my family cooking, eating, and cleaning rice. Still, coincidentally, the material of the rice bags reminded me of the bags of rice my great-grandmother used to buy, so I kept them, unsure of what to do next.
I decided to sew them together to make this tapestry of rice without the presence or weight of rice. I used pulleys to hold up the rice tapestry to poke some fun at how unnecessary it is since the bags are extremely lightweight, but emotionally the pulleys are carrying the weight of the memories I carry and of the rice that used to be in the bags. This will be an ongoing project.
