Hi I’m just a nobody with a nobody opinion, (However I’m trans so that’s something I guess? (also wow, who would have guessed the person who runs a Chihiro fanblog is trans)) but I also think that labeling Chihiro as trans is completely fine. Here’s my reasoning: Chihiro is completely transitioned.
A cis person does not go through the arduous effort of not only transitioning to appear female but also presumably do voice training (as Chihiro’s voice sounds female at least in the English version) to make up for the insecurity of feeling weak.
I know what you’re about to say, Chihiro literally has lines like “I’m actually a boy” and refers to themselves as such after being revealed to not be a cis woman. But here’s the thing, many trans people doubt themselves... a lot. I should know. I struggle with even calling myself a trans girl, let alone a girl. It’s a hard thing to accept and sometimes jumping back into the closet is an easier solution than confronting it. Although it’s possible that Chihiro’s desire to present female stems from insecurity, I find it more likely that they are trans and use their insecurity as internal justification for it.
Honestly I would also be much more open to the “Chihiro is a boy” interpretation if that entire arc wasn’t filled with so much transphobic garbage. The whole section after they discover the truth about Chihiro is honestly just a collection of very yikesable moments. If you’re gonna write a character that is so heavily trans coded (Gender non conforming, has an arc that literally addresses gender, fits many of the MtF stereotypes, I mean come on. ultimate programmer.) you should make sure that it’s not bursting with transphobia.
In conclusion, if you disagree with me, that’s fine. I just wanted to give you my personal opinion and take. I hope we can all agree that Chihiro is a great character questionable story arcs aside.
