This is your friendly reminder that if you want to play Hogwarts Legacy, it's okay to. You aren't a bad person for enjoying things that are associated with shitty people. People shouldn't judge others using the guilt by association fallacy, but by their direct actions and words toward other people.
Being told to boycott a piece of media by people who religiously pay money to companies like Disney is a giant EL OH EL from me.
Your phone was built by slaves, your pants were sewn by children. The vast majority of the media you consume is made by or associated with "problematic" people. You don't have a fucking leg to stand on.
By all means, boycott whatever teensy thing makes you feel better. We all need to find a way to sleep at night. But omg leave people the hell alone. How virtuous can you possibly be when you behave like rabid attack dogs to complete strangers? Are you really adding to the collective happiness of the world? Or are you yet another unhinged voice screaming into the ears of the disillusioned?
There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
I continue to boycott new HP merch, and have focused on building my collection of vintage, second-hand, or homemade merch instead. Originally I was going to keep this going and boycott the game too, but then I realised that the joy I’d get out of playing it FAR outweighs the joy I get out of not supporting JKR.
Life is too short to deprive yourself of a good time. There is no reason to feel guilty for wanting to play this game… I feel like we’ve all been waiting for this since our first Hogwarts experiences, and I believe as the wonderful inclusive fandom we’ve built ourselves into, we deserve the fantastic escape Hogwarts Legacy is sure to be!
(Also it needs to be noted that there is a whole team of creatives and developers and that aren’t JKR, who’s hard work will be directly supported by those of us who purchase the game!)
