“Our court endeavors to reflect on the seasons. Such as this - you may notice how every lady displays a flower embroidered on their kimono’s or fashioned in their hair somehow. These pink flowers only bloom when midwinter draws to a close and our Goddess bestows her temperate breath to warm and awaken our animals and crops. We call it setsubun. It means this a beginning for which we are thankful.” 𝓒𝓵𝒆𝓿𝒆𝓻 𝓵𝓪𝓭, 𝓼𝓱𝒆 𝓽𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽.
“Rarely. This kind of revelry is reserved for honored guests, our Great Emperor’s family, our Gods, and observed civic holidays such as the Equinox....tanabata....and you may be familiar with a custom in the spring where women confess and proclaim their affection for a man they find desirable as a partner? We have a tradition, much like that - where the menfolk actually answer their confessions at a later date if indeed their feelings are returned. It is called Howaito Day and our men bequeath something white to the lady which they fancy.”
Two could play this coy game of diversion - he’d obviously been instructed in the art of banter that was meant to distract her from learning anything overly personal about him. She was intrigued.
“I could not speak for all women everywhere sir,” she said evenly. Her gaze fluttered up, intelligent and held his attention for the briefest of passing moments before she sighed and looked away back out at the ballroom.
“You are a hard individual to read,” she commented, her voice a perfect mixture of amusement and subtle pouting.
“Your pleasantries,” her lips quirked ever so slight at the corners,
“........are very well rehearsed.”

A morning as any other had been filled with order and mundane timely routine. For the Yamani ladies, that included an early glaive practice in the courtyard, going through the motions and drawing their usual audience. They gained more and more ladies every day as well - especially those of the Queen’s Riders that found such movements different along with the exercise and agreeable company pleasurable. Then she took to the Hall for their first meal of the day with Shinko. The two, acquainted from girlhood, were close and gossiped quietly about a variety of topics they found amusing.
The only oddity was that her friend had seemed....secretive, this day. As if she knew something Yukimi did not and no amount of prodding could seem to procure the answer she desired from her confidant.
And Shinko had giggled and dismissed her for the day, to have some - how had she put it? Time to reflect? On what? She was at such a loss, clasping the parchment paper she’d beckoned a wandering page to get her so she could return to her chambers and write. She’d kept herself occupied with this script since her friends had left months past to settle disputes North and see to matters at New Hope. Reading and writing had shown the way for Yuki, a welcome divertissement from....thinking of how they were faring. Of course, she wrote as well yet she felt if she did oft she would miss them too much...and the Princess could not have born to see Yuki wearing anything but the calm serene expressions she wore...with of course the rare smiles. But those were rarer....still pending it seemed until a certain individual returned to remind her how easy they were to wear.
Turning round, idly immersed in thought his sudden appearance caught her off guard and by all means fairly shocked the Yamani - so wonderfully - into dropping the parchment paper she carried. Hands flew to cover her mouth as she gasped and wished - oh Great mother Goddess - that she hadn’t left her fan back in her quarters because she was so quick to laugh, a strangled giggle that conveyed how marvelous it was to see him.
And lifting up her skirts she hopped over her affects on the floor with a spritely step and quickly ran over to hug him. Customs and rules be forsaken! He was back in one piece and that was all that mattered to her!
“ 𝒴𝑜𝓊 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝓌𝑒𝓁𝓁? 𝒴𝑜𝓊 𝓁𝑜𝑜𝓀 𝓈𝑜! 𝐼 𝒸𝒶𝓃’𝓉 𝒷𝑒𝓁𝒾𝑒𝓋𝑒 𝓎𝑜𝓊’𝓇𝑒 𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒 ! ”
She laughed embracing him - then drew away at a respectable arms length.
“Why didn’t you tell me! You- you planned this! I swear I haven’t had such a startle since- I can’t remember! I can’t think at all no thanks to you! How are you? Oh, I’m so beside myself! Neal! For shame! Shinko knew didn’t she! How many people knew and kept this from me! Is Kel back too?!”
Shinkokami’s ladies moved with the easy grace of women who knew all eyes were on them. They let the royal couple take part in their first dance. It was a tradition, for the monarchs to christen the dance floor. After, as time went on, more and more couples joined in - and the Yamani as was expected.
Delicate, their sandals sliding soundless as water would flow down stream. Fans unfurled and waved as though falling petals off a peach blossom tree.
The night progressed and a trained eye kept on him. All on his own. Why? She wondered. Sentiment made her soft, she remembered, yet she could not help but think...what if he had no friends here? Had anyone made an effort to befriend this man? Did he keep to himself out of shyness?
𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝔀𝓪𝓼 𝓲𝓽? ℋ𝓸𝔀 𝓬𝓸𝓾𝓵𝓭 𝓼𝓱𝒆 𝓱𝒆𝓵𝓹?
Unable to bear it any longer, she dutifully bowed to their Highness's and retreated, keeping her eyes on his as she went over to his side, leaned up against the pillar he was occupying and spoke in a low, sweet tremor.
“.....tis a fine night, no?”
Language often did reveal and dictate wherein a person was of noble birth or less. She could not help her own practiced politeness the way some could not help how they walked -- it was of second nature and simply how she had been taught to act.
“A guardian?” she mused, arching a thinly curved eyebrow. “Intriguing,” the Yamani spoke.
“What then, pray tell, do you protect Sir?”
She took to heart his offer, looking down briefly to consider.
Was there anything he could help her with? Something she needed or wanted to be....fixed, as he’d so put it.
“I have nothing....broken....in need of mending,” she answered.
“However, I was in the market place visiting a friend when a pickpocket stole something that once held sentiment for me. And though I know I shan’t have a chance of getting it back...I am in need of a new hair pin? Could you perhaps procure a new one for me? I like these pins, especially the hand painted ones...like they have back home...the home I miss some times.”
𝐼 𝒸𝒶𝓃𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝓇𝑒𝒸𝒶𝓁𝓁 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓁𝒶𝓈𝓉 𝑔𝓊𝑒𝓈𝓉 𝓉𝑜 𝒾𝓃𝒻𝓁𝓊𝑒𝓃𝒸𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒸𝑜𝓊𝓇𝓉 𝓈𝑜.
She slowly descended the stairs after her Princess, head bowed as the other Yamani ladies were instructed to do until Shinko reached Roald’s side.
Only then could she acknowledge the other guests.
However the room was thrumming, the electricity a palpable distraction.
𝒲𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝒾𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝓇𝓁𝒹?
Still yet she peaked, beneath her lashes just glimpsing a tall blond man with the regal bearing she so recognized--
Perhaps a foreign delegate?
Ah, ah - her chin rose a notch and made the right hand corner of her rouge painted lips....turn up a tech. A knowing prelude to a smile oft naught but stifled.
