Full series is available for torrent here, “episode 36″ is just a compilation music video edited down to just the new content which is an epilogue to the series. I hope you enjoy it! May I tell you a story about how I discovered Sonic Soldier Borgman? It’s quite the rabbit hole of a tale, sorry for the wall of text...
I’ve been part of the Tokusatsu community (Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, etc.) for many years now. The community also introduced me to a music group called Metal Brothers (Koutetsu Kyoudai), a heavy metal band made up of two famous members from JAM Project. In most of their albums, they do cover songs of vintage robot anime, robot tokustatsu, and other similar titles. (Think of them like a more melodic version of Animetal.)
While listening to one of their cover albums, I heard a melody that had a very striking line in English. ( ♫ Let’s spend the night together now... ♫ ) Well, after hearing it a few years, I got curious. One Google search later, and I found out that it’s the opening themes to the TV series “Sonic Soldier Borgman.” Interested, I looked up more information...
Can you imagine my surprise when one of the descriptions for the show compares it to Super Sentai with transforming, multicolored super heroes and giant monsters? On top of all that, the TV series came out in the late 1980′s. I was BORN in the 80′s! (1984, to be exact). Meaning, if I had been a kid in Japan, I probably would have watched this. And it has one of those incredibly detailed art styles that you don’t often see these days in anime, which I have come to appreciate as of recently.
If all of that wasn’t a sign, I don’t know what is! The only disappointment was when my research told me that the two movies had been officially licensed and sold on DVD here in America, but not the TV series for some reason... Thank goodness for fansubs! Soon, I’ll be enjoying a rare but awesome piece of anime history. :) And if I really enjoy the series, I’ll be sure to buy those movies some day.
[**BONUS ROUND! The song I mentioned before, “Yoru o Futtobase”, is sung by HIPS. Female vocalist Keiko Terada is part of HIPS. I previously discovered her work in Tokusatsu. With Rider Chips, she sang 3 songs for the TV series Kamen Rider Ryuki. Those songs are “Hateshinai Honō no Naka e”, “Firebird”, and “Gravitation”. Incidentally, in the early 2000′s, she became my favorite female vocalist for being someone who could sing both hard rock song and sentimental ballads. Again, it feels like discovering this anime was my destiny.**]
