two leagues down
among the goldenrod kelp reaching out towards the sun like a forest of sinewy arms— I levitated; surrounded by the cuttlefish and mollusks and the spectrum of blue and streams of sprinkled light; my face masked with the last efforts of breath, fist-sized bubbles dripping out, toward the sun on its descent; an anglerfish, with a mouth like an opening soup can, hovering in front of my face with its lure touching my brow; two leagues down I’ve made my home; along the seabed I wait for death to come; but instead, I’ve created a place for life to begin— peach and turquoise, golden brown, polyps fall and attach themselves; a pair of microfossils crack off a weathered log near my feet, dislocate and make deep rails on either side of my neck; and it’s then that I begin to breathe— full, deep-lunged, shuddering breaths— and the life around flutters, recovers, and kisses my skin again.

Everything ends. And it’s always sad. But everything begins again too, and that’s always happy. Be happy.
