uh, for context that thing is to use it for making chloroacetic acid (but hopefully better this time) by using a dry solution of hcl in dioxane and reacting with glycolic acid over some dehydrating agent

Ive attempted this before, but its kind of an annoying synthesis. The thermite-like reaction between magnesium and lye also generates significant hydrogen gas, which is cool. However I didnt have the proper magnesium filing size so all the lye sunk to the bottom due to smaller particle size, so it didn't properly react. The sodium made is highly porous and reactive, and is somewhat pyrophoric.

The guy who created (or at least heavily publicized) the thermochemical dioxane process, Nurdrage, created a second, easier, cheaper, safer low-temperature process that uses menthol and can have crazy yields of ~90% (video here)

If you have magnesium (any form works but the finer it is the faster the reaction goes) and a hot plate-stirrer that can keep a flask 200°C for up to 30 hours, then it's fully feasible for you to do this. the end result is nice sodium globs that you don't really see in other processes.

Also, it only *might* explode. It's stored over sodium hydroxide and I'm not wholly sure of sodium hydroxide ether-decomposing capabilities. I know it does but I dont know how well, so we'll just see.
