Cropping Practice: The Video

Hey guys! So I did a cropping practice video and the subject for this video is a cat named Comot from the Malaysian cartoon, Ejen Ali. I did a simple one and though people might say

“Why don’t you use curve pen tool?”

“Why click it many times?”

It’s a cropping practice and I see which one that suits but hey it doesn’t mean that I dont use the curve one! Don’t worry :)

Magazine Cover: The Assignment

Hi guys! So last time I did an assignment on making a magazine cover and as you can see the theme or genre of this magazine is music. I drafted three genres but the rest sounds cliché according to sir so I proceeded with this.

The Challenges

Making this magazine cover is challenging because the tone is lean more towards black and white and I had to use colorful typography to make it pop out.

Not just that, since my background mostly is not plain, I had to use label-ish box so that the typography can be seen especially at the keyboard part. I originally wanted it to be all black and white for the aesthetics but I think it will look boring and dull thus, the vibrant colors.

Lastly, the typography. It is kind of difficult to find the right typography for this cover. I wanted it to be as simple as it can but still looks nice. Thank you Century Gothic!

Contest: Raya Edition (Went Wrong?)

✨Selamat Hari Raya everyone!✨

The title attract you attention? This is because it is true! So our lecturer held a Raya contest which was to crop a cartoon character from Malaysia, Upin & Ipin and make a scenario for it using text bubbles and others but instead of making a poster-like, I did a card and I’m the only one did that! It was a bit of a twist, I didn’t won hahaha but I made it to top 10. Not bad right? I had fun making it. Take care everyone and stay tune for my next posts!

My Poster & I

Hi guys! So last time we reviewed and talk about font poster but this time, it’s my turn to make one but I can’t simply put many stuffs in there as there’s a guideline because this is for my assignment. Let’s begin our evaluation shall we?

So the question is, why this? Okay let’s break it down using the element of design (minus texture).

Lines - There is a line between the font name and year and the letters.

Shapes - Although it’s might not be it but the ‘N’ letter is a shape in this context.

Sizes - This poster uses variety of text sizes.

Colors - This poster uses three colors from a color combination palette.

Value - The value for this poster is the composition. It looks neat and attractive, I believe.

Extra evaluation: I manipulated the ‘N’ letter, how cool is that?

The Beginning of Everything

For years and years I’ve been wondering, when can I ever publish my songs. I want to do it right thus, the wait. These are only a few of my songs, and those are the best ones.

I’m a songwriter. I started to write songs when I was 10 years old. It all began when a teacher insulted my voice infront of my team.

“You’re voice deserves to be only backup singer!”

I was humiliated. I then began to songwriting and I sang it to myself. At first it was a coping mechanism but then it became hobby and turned into passion.

Every time the idea kicks in I started to write. My songs are primarily about relationships, the love and the breakups. And it’s based on real experience.

I want to debut before I die because I want to share the happy and the sorrow of my life with people who can maybe relate to it. I can talk about my songs all day long but that have to wait. Until next time!

Fonts and What I Like: Poster Edition

Hi! So for todays’s topic I’m going to talk about my favourite fonts poster and further explain the reason why. I have two favourite which are Avenir and Baskerville.

Avenir

One of my favourite is Avenir. This poster some might say it is ‘messy’ but for me it’s informative and straightforward. Created in 1988 by Adrian Frutiger, Avenir means “future” in French. Avenir is a sans-serif typeface. As you can see the poster above shows the information about Avenir. Also another reason why I like it because it have a big font family! You can use many type and style. I like to see all the weights there! Examples of brand that use Avenir font is Spotify.

Baskerville

Next is Baskerville. I like this poster because it screams vintage and very Shakespeare-ish. Baskerville was created in year 1757 by John Baskerville. By far the oldest font I’ve ever known. Baskerville its a transitional serif typeface. I’m all about the black and white aesthetic and although it looks messy but it’s informative that you can even learn the history of it! How cool is that? Example brand that use Baskerville font is Kate Spade New York.

Extra + End

There are about 200,000+ fonts in the world and there’s no way that I only like these two only. You guys should check the other fonts. Each of them is unique in their own way. Don’t be afraid to explore!

Sunset and The Ocean

When I look at the sunset,

Bad Typography: In House Edition

In this post, I’m going to talk about bad typography that I can find around my house and luckily, I found one. This is based on my own opinion.

Food

As you can see above, it is a tempura batter by the brand Bestari. Why I chose this? In my opinion, the typography is a mess. Let me point it out:

The kerning in Tempura Batter text and the Chinese translation for it is too wide, need to make it closer.

TOO MANY FONTS USED!

The composition is disturbing.

Extra point: The packaging is not attractive at all. It looks cheap (it is cheap in price) and looks lame. But the batter is delicious!

Clothing

This may look like a normal t-shirt but I dislike how huge the writing is! I know that this is a statement t-shirt but the size of the typography is too big and long. I bought this when I was in high school. Maybe at that time I thought it’s cool but now that I’ve learn about it, this shirt is a no-no. It makes the wearer looks weird.

Stationary

By the shape that is shown at the packaging you know what it is. This is paper clip. Notice something else? Yes, the name of the brand. The brand is ‘Penguin Brand’ but admit it, you can only see ‘Enguin Brand’. The letter P is hidden by the price tag (unavoidable factor) and because the letter P is far away from the rest if the text. The kerning is wide.

That’s it from me regarding bad typography. A company should take typography seriously because it affect the image of the product.

I Met You When I Was 19 (The Story)

Before this I posted an analysis about Lauv’s world tour poster but today I’m going to talk about him and how he changed my world.

Lauv or hia real name Ari Staprans Leff (born August 8, 1994) is an American singer, songwriter and record producer based in Los Angeles.

A brief about his music career:

Debuted his EP Lost in the Light in 2015.

Debuted his compilation album I Met You When I Was 18 (The Playlist) in 2018.

Debuted his album How I'm Feeling in 2020.

He collaborated with many artists such as BTS, Julia Micheals, LANY and Troye Sivan.

How I discovered him

I discovered him through his hit song I Like Me Better because it was streamed all over the world in multiple platforms. I then further looked at his compilation album. It was in 2018, my second year of diploma.

I like him more after I listen to his compilation album, I Met You When I Was 18 (The Playlist). It consists of 17 songs and it was a masterpiece. None of the songs are boring. In this album, Lauv is a hopeless romantic boy. I feel connected, I guess I’m the same as him as I was having a hard time in love and relationship issues.

Lauv have many other songs from his EP, compilation album, singles and album but my favourite is definitely from I Met You When I Was 18 (The Playlist)

Poster: The Elements of Design

Above is ~ how i’m feeling world tour ~ poster by American singer-songwriter, Lauv for year 2020. Lauv (Ari Staprans Leff) is widely known with his hit song, I Like Me Better. He is one of my favourite artist.

In this post, I’m not going to talk about his songs or album (next post maybe) but I’m going to talk and analyze about the elements of design in his 2020 ~ how i’m feeling world tour ~ poster.

Lines - There are white lines at the top and bottom of the poster to separate texts.

Shapes - There are shapes like stars in the middle of the poster and Lauv’s logo at the top right of the poster.

Sizes - The texts have different sizes. The purpose is to highlight the important notes.

Colours - The poster uses rainbow colours. It is vibrant and contrasting to the white coloured text.

Value - The value of this poster is the color used. It grabs reader’s attention and looks lively and fun.

Texture - The base of the poster have grainy effect texture.

Packaging: The Good vs. The Bad

Advertising is not just involving poster, online and printed media only. It is everything. Packaging plays a big role in advertising because it represent the brand/company image. Not all company take a good care of their packaging. Some just want to get it done and sell it to the market without knowing the effect of not think through regarding the packaging of their product.

The Good

Let’s take a look at the packaging above. It is a tea product by Good & Proper Tea. A you can see, they used a zip lock packaging and for me it is a good one because it is very convenient. Customer that buy the product would not be needing rubber to tie up the typical plastic packaging or a large box to store the teabag but instead, this company provide a zip lock packaging that helps the customer to store their tea. it is art tight and the quality of the tea is assured.

The Bad

As you can see above, those are the bad packaging by let us not mention the supermarket. It shows that the company wants to save budget by doing this kind off “vegetable and fruit” packaging. Foods above belongs to bakery section and I just don’t get it why would they do that? Maybe they did that to preserve the longevity of the food but that is totally not the way of doing it. It looks unattractive and pointless! Customers would not be inclined to buy the product because it does not look tasty (it looks horrible). The whole idea is totally wrong.

Final thoughts?

Packaging is very important because it is the front line of the company. The customer will look at the packaging before looking at the brand. The packaging attracts people. End of words, do not mess with packaging and please design a better one that is useful and beautiful.
